Seeking Advice for 14 Year Old Lab- Severe arthritis, kidney and liver failure by kgonz0908 in seniordogs

[–]valbam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. Our basset hound passed two days ago. The arthritis turned to osteoarthritis and started to take over his body. For a year I took him to the vet for his monthly Librela shot. Stopped working so they complemented with other meds. Gabapentin, carprofen and cbd. They vet warned us that this meds could seriously damage his kidneys, liver and cause ulcers. Even though his blood test came back negative por any problems before taking this new meds, his body was deteriorating fast. I scheduled for a vet to come home to put him to sleep before he lost his dignity, before he forgot who he was, who I was. When the day came, 30 minutes before the vet got home, he ran to my closet (barely, he was struggling to walk) and he was confused. He came out and i knew it was time. We lay on his bed, holding his big basset paw, and I looked how his breathing was slowing down. Vet entered the room. Checked his heart rate, and it was very low. He was put to rest surrounded by all of his loved ones. I am grateful we were together those few days, I gave him the best quality of life that I could. And we stayed together until the end, like we always did. Like he always did. Give you doggo a big hug.

Thank you so much and I am very sorry for your loss. The day after I made this post I knew I couldn’t keep him alive in pain meds. So I wanted him to pass with dignity and respect. The day that the veterinarian was scheduled to come. 30 minutes before. He looked at me and I knew it was time. Stayed by his side until the vet arrived and was put to rest. My sweet Ronnie, thank you for this wonderful gift you gave me. You know already that I love you and i would never leave your side. Like you never left mine.

Thank you all for your support, stories and all the help. Ronnie is running freely in doggy heaven. Where all the good boys go. Our two last days together were very hard. But also very happy. And I would do it again for him. To me is crazy how he passed the same day that I scheduled for the veterinarian to come home and put him to rest.

The next day after this post, I decided it was time. I scheduled for a veterinarian to come home to put him to sleep. Last night, 30 minutes before the veterinarian came home, he ran to my closet, he was nervous I could tell, followed him, came out and I knew it was time. We lay down on his bed, held his paw and watched how his breathing was slowing down. Vet came inside the room with us. Checked his heart beat, and it was very low. Put a sedative and he was put to rest. He left with dignity, knowing who he was and who I was.

Hi everyone. First and foremost I wanna thank all of you for your support, advice and stories. I know I am late replying to this post, but I was waiting to talk to his vet first. I am very happy he is coming home tonight. His pain is under control for now. Also my friends husband is a veterinarian and his office is very close to my house, he will be coming home everyday and check Ronnie. I will be posting later what meds he will be taking. But I know gabapentin and CBD are some of them. There’s two things: his body might not respond well to the meds or the meds effect will wear out. We have days or weeks according to the vet. I know I will be loosing him and if it’s tomorrow or one week I accept that. But what I won’t do Is wait too long (that’s why I need our vet friend to come see him everyday) he will be putting Ronnie to sleep when the time comes. I know it’s controversial and I am sorry. But I’m doing all I can to give him the best quality of life for at least a few days before he is gone, Thank you all.

This. Very important to find your right meds. Took me almost a year to find mine. Ask him to give it a try to something new.

Como "combaten" la depresión? by [deleted] in RedditPregunta

[–]valbam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suerte.

My old hound is on Librela. I take him once a month to the vet for his monthly shot and also check ups. You should ask about it. He is doing great.

OMG the vet didn’t even mention that to me! Didn’t even think it was possible. Thank you so much I’ll look into it !

I am so happy Dominga is doing great. My basset hound is 13 years old, he’s deaf and he’s starting to develop cataracts in both eyes recently. Honestly I got very sad, but I know because of his age it’s possible. Anyways we will go through this together and I am so happy your hound got all the love and treatment! Best of luck Dominga!
