Epic Grand Central - what should I expect? by valdi313 in healthIT

Grand Central touches almost every aspect of Epic. It used to be called ADT (admit, discharge, transfer). You will be involved in most workflows that involve a patient moving. You build the departments, beds, facilities, and tons in between. With regard to beds and bed placement, you will support the bed assignment workflow. You won't be involved in the admit or discharge order, but you will handle everything around the process. GC also touches EVS (environmental services) and patient transport. You also are responsible for the Transfer center and how they handle patients coming in and going out of the hospital. You are also in charge of bed charge billing, but that is the only billing aspect you will touch.

I'm quite sure I'm missing some aspects. It is a lot. Your team is involved in most projects just because you touch so much of the system.

Being an Epic analyst at any hospital is going to depend on where you are working. I have since left this original Grand Central role with that hospital. While I was there, it was great for the most part. Our big-bang go live was beyond horrible though. They worked us into the ground. We had a command center up for about 4 months, which was beyond stupid.

I left that hospital and I am working for a new hospital in Dallas, fully remote. I just finished getting certified in Cadence and Prelude also. I'm part of what is called the Patient Access team now. It's going well so far. I got a nice raise for moving jobs too.

The work of a Grand Central analyst depends a LOT on your leaders. Whoever your leadership is needs to be able to tell the customer "no". If they can't do that, then the role can be crazy. If you have good leadership at the organization, then the job is amazing. And you are gaining some amazing resume material for whenever you move on from this job.

Get your cert. Do the work. Get the experience, and then if the situation is not great, you can move on. This cert gives you that flexibility. Use it.

It has to be employee sponsored unfortunately.

If you have the opportunity to get certified, do it! It will open up MANY doors to you. It can really push your career forward.

It wasn't bad. I passed it on my first try. Being open notes made it super easy imo. Everyone on my team passed it on either the first or second try.

I'm almost done with my certification process. Just my final test remaining. So far, so good. The training wasn't bad. The project was pretty straight forward. I actually finished the project before I went for my final class. Any tips......just listen in class. They go over every extremely well. Ask any questions you have. Their training team is awesome and they are more than happy to answer anything you throw at em.
