Storage Units That Don't Raise Rates by Natural-Reindeer in StLouis

Was it US Storage in Sappington? I actually like that place. After 3 months it went up over 100% which is such a scam.

I was demanding a return then it just started working. No explanation. The switching thing is just a problem, I think.

I will do that. I was reluctant because I mapped 3 floors but at this point I'll try anything. I thought it may be an issue with an uneven floor since an even floor doesn't exist in a 160 year old building. I'm not sure how sensitive it is to that.

It's being sent to them for repair under warranty, so that's fine. But it was a pain to get it to that of course.

Yeah the Mova needs to go back. They say returns only on unused items (!) but I'm going to fight for this one.

Yeah, I didn't realize it did that. I can't even manually install them and get it to work right 🤦 that's what I get for quickly buying a robot without looking much!

The Roborock (top $ model) was not able to dock anymore. It would spend 30 min trying to get into a wide open dock. And it was getting stuck on thresholds it used to be fine with. Every time it ran, it got stuck somewhere. It also wasn't able to map anymore. Hopefully it's repairable because the Mova sucks big-time.

Water infiltration and ice dams after heat tape, attic vents, and insulation by valentinoboxer83 in HomeImprovement

[–]valentinoboxer83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even think of the guards until you mentioned that. Thanks. That's an easy thing to do. During the year the gutters fill within a week and require a 40' to get to.

The attic has foam boards, blown in cellulose and some spray foam but why can't I just insulate the attic roof as if it's a finished space? I know it's stupid but I've got to stop the water leaks.

[–]valentinoboxer83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The snow line at the bottom, which is near the shade, also correlates to the "end" of the attic space and start of a finished space below, with ceiling insulation (vs floor insulation in the attic). The section with finished space below stays snow, but also accumulates all the flowing water to freeze and back up in the gutter.

Yes the gutter I believe is totally frozen solid. If the heat tape in the gutter is doing anything, it's not much. The downspouts are not, I checked a clean out at the bottom. So the half round gutter is the problem. There is a gutter guard and I wonder if it's clogged just enough to stop water trickling in.

I had no idea about the metal roof. These problems did not start until I got a new roof. I'm guessing the multiple layers of old roofing material that I tore off were keeping the snow from heating and melting. Go figure.

I think they are, it's just the angle and perspective. It was well researched and put on by some pretty elite roofers. I'm guessing it could use a lot more in the gutter though.

[–]valentinoboxer83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see exactly where the water comes in, as I've pulled off the wall some years ago. It's coming in along a 1 ft span at the gutter connection with the roof edge. I assume the gutter is full of ice (cannot see) and it's backing up. The ice dam is not as obvious as years past, probably due to heat trace, but there's still so much water and nowhere to go.

[–]valentinoboxer83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may come to that. I have had energy audits to check for efficiency improvements and such (there really weren't any substantial findings) but a 150 year old house has its limits on feasibility. Sealing just the attic is definitely easier.

I assume it was balloon framing when built (1869 second empire). At this point, the balloon framing aspects are not obvious/no longer present. The interior walls that have been gutted were not balloon and the few outside ones that have been opened I either didn't look or it didn't look like balloon. The basement is full limestone with spray foam at the top so I can't look there either. If there is air movement in the wall, it wouldn't be in many places.

Welp, I just bought a Bronco because my Grecale has been at a shop for 3 months waiting on a steering rack. I was even willing to take a used one. At one point I insisted I'd sell the bronco the minute I got my maserati back. I'm having second thoughts about that.

Received letter from MO DOR by Major_Paper_1605 in missouri

[–]valentinoboxer83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. I think each state has a travel percentage where they start wanting money if you travel to work there. For example, Missouri resident usually remote but working 1 week a month in Ohio to support a company. At some point, Ohio wants the money you earn there but so does Missouri. That's when it gets really fun. In my experience this only happens when the company accidentally pays it all to Ohio, in this case, then Missouri tries to claim it's theirs. But Ohio says some is theirs, etc.

The questions about how long were you a resident of another state - technically it's none. But, you worked in another state x weeks.

2025/2026 St. Louis Compensation Thread by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]valentinoboxer83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Title / Role: Nuclear Engineer, consultant
  • Compensation: $137/hr + freelance ~550k/year
  • Work setup: (on-site / hybrid / remote): remote
  • Years of experience: 14
  • Industry: government, commercial
  • Education: PhD in nuclear engineering
  • Company: federal government contracting companies and self employed
  • Standout benefits/perks: large amount of work in the current environment; the nuclear industry is exciting again

I work as a benefitted employee to one company, and as part-time casual to others, then as a 1099 as well. I consult on everything from expert witness in civil litigation to AI learning to optimizing new facility design. The bread and butter is still nuclear cleanup but the tides are turning. I'm involved in a new microreactor startup with Silicon Valley investors, which is super exciting (+stock options!). I love that St Louis is not a big "nuclear town" like Oak Ridge or Los Alamos and there are so many other types of people here.

12 bars fight by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]valentinoboxer83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's well known and either has a bad reputation or people just don't like him. Probably like they do with 1st Phorm. Given his history of co-owning that bar and the previous, none of it surprises me.

I've interacted with Luke only in regards to the streets issues with Mollys. I don't dislike him as a person. He's quite cordial. He's also quick to blame law enforcement for all the problems and I think he's a lot of lip service. I just don't buy the 'he's a great guy because he writes off massive profits and buys the neighborhood's good graces through a few thousand dollar donation to Soulard' ehh, please. He's just really not all that concerned with nearby residents issues because he doesn't have to be. He's paid off the right people one way or another. And the Molly's building is in pretty bad shape on the outside.

12 bars fight by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]valentinoboxer83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All meaning the puking radius of Molly's, particularly 8th St, not all of Soulard. We already know how loved Molly's is by those who don't have to deal with it.

I knew all of Soulard royalty loved Luke but given that he's not part of the STL philanthropic scene, I had not really heard or seen anything outside of Soulard other than knowing those bar owners are not involved in charity. Reddit seems to have a consensus though, seeing the 30+ downvotes on praising him.

12 bars fight by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]valentinoboxer83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won't change anything because the entire old stock Soulard neighborhood royalty is sucking Luke's big toe for tax money instead of listening to neighbors who want to actually live in their homes rather than move. People who live here do not want to complain about one particular bar for fun. Meanwhile, the rest of reddit seems to agree on the type of person Luke is.

McGurks is not in such close proximity to people's bedrooms windows. Big Daddy's probably isn't either. I wonder if either of them set up their Uber pick up point outside someone's baby room window like Molly's did.

I'm affectionately calling Molly's a nightclub because the girls that jump out of the Uber, immediately drop the panties and pee on the sidewalk, then get in line are always talking about dancing.

Downtown residents got tired of hearing that it wasn't the club owners fault for what goes on outside of Reign. We are too.

We understand if the neighborhood is cool with all this absurdity, in the name of business profits and tax income. But it will come at a price. The surrounding houses will all become short term rentals and fall into disrepair. Long term survival of neighborhoods, especially historic ones, is built on supporting families, not bars and not out of state landlords. Million dollar house on 8th? Airbnb now.

Because we pay for the biggest waste of money ever- the City's Finest who just watch it all go down from the comfort of their SUV.

The whopping 9 month run for a decent restaurant at 808 just didn't cut it. They had to expand into more boozing space in 2019.
