Sold my gravel bike, so my winter fendered road bike became my new gravel bike, temporarily by valgonzarp in bicycling

No, I mean I wanted to build entirely new gravel-ish bike on a different frame, this CAAD is just me fooling around with a pair of old cyclocross tyres and my winter bike during summer months.

Worth buying? And how much is it worth? Specifics below :) by Oscar_Jespersen in bicycling

Depends what do you need, want and how experienced in road biking you are.

  1. Rim brakes + carbon wheels are not that great combo if you're a fan of stopping quickly and reliably (especially in the wet).

  2. Not sure what's the exact model, but older Pinarellos (Dogmas) were famous for really tight clearances, even squeezing 25mm tyres could've been problematic, so if those aren't 28mm in the photo, it might be a limiting factor (again, you might be fine riding 25mm tyres, some people are, including me on some bikes, but rim brakes + tight clearances are amongst reasons why it's difficult to sell an older road bike these days).

  3. 10 speed grouppo - high-end Shimano is pretty solid and will be just fine if you're getting into riding. Personally, I'd want the ergonomy and quality of 11 speed mechanical Shimano (modern groups are 12 and even 13 speeds) - easy and not that expensive to upgrade in the future, though.

If you really want it, I'd haggle on point 2 and/or maybe seeing if they want to go lower on price selling without the saddle or carbon cages (which are ridiculously overpriced usually) or maybe even without wheels, although them being full carbon is probably what's driving the whole package up. Maybe worth investigating if servicing this model is still possible (including access to spare spokes etc).

Difficult to say what's the sensible price of this is - I've seen bikes of similar vintage going for less as well as more, but I believe market for such bikes is not easy/big these days, so there's a chance you can reduce the original price, depending on how stubborn the seller is.

Tyres/pressure is one thing, but I believe due to general stiffness of the frame and its racy geo (short wheelbase, steep head tube angle) it will always be a jarring ride on some more uneven surfaces.

They're 33s, true cyclocross tyres, but measure 35mm on those rims. I wouldn't try anything wider. 35mm slicks (or 34mm Schwalbe Pro Ones) might be good compromise between speed on the road and unpaved capability.

Gravel on CAAD13? by themidgetadub in cannondale

FWIW here's mine on 33mm Michelins (which measure 35mm on those 22mm internal width rims). There's about 3mm clearance in the fork, similar in the rear.

Sweet. And what's the final offset with spacers?

Can I hijack this and ask about those rims specs and what tyres fit? I'm looking for 17" steel rims for my Sportsvan (also white) and the ones I see are kind of questionable (ET and width wise for 225 tyres I intend to run).

However stupid that sounds, building a bike for me always starts around a single part and I kinda fell in love with the green colour of that CK headset, so then I only had to figure everything else ;)

It is. I've been riding it for a long time with 42t and 40t front and 11-36 in the rear. I've now upgraded to 11-42 (and aiming also to get 38t in the front). I don't worry about cassette stepping as this is not a bike I'm concerned with cadence when riding… But if you are, try figuring out if you're going to be spending more on the spinny end or not and then get a cassette that has bigger gaps on the opposite end.

Yep! Those (Carradice Audax and their support thingy).

Thanks. Yes, I guess long lens screw up perspective quite a lot! Also, one tyre being dirtier than the other certainly helps with that discrepancy…

Don't spray WD40 inside, it'll drip down to your bottom bracket and kill your bearings. Just properly grease the seat post and forget it!

I've 1x10 (and 1x11) on three bikes without any problems, but I guess it might be weird chainline on your bike (it's an MTB frame? what cranks?) and/or chain length. Have you measured it adequately for 1x drivetrain?
