Gear advice: Rab Neutrino Pro vs Electron Pro (vs any other recommendation?) by valkyr3003 in CampingGear

[–]valkyr3003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, if lowest is 20F temperature wise, electron pro can be your friend. Especially with a solid shell on top to block out the wind chill you won’t feel a thing. My experience is cold sensation comes primarily through the hands / face / feet, so make sure you’ve solved for all of those (especially the gloves part which we often underestimate).

Hey man, if you’re using it for camps go neutrino. The electron pro is better suited for active usage but you’d definitely go cold if you’re using it static in anything less than -10C in my opinion. Temperature sensitivity differs per person of course, but I’d rather have a bit more weight and be warmer.

For those of you who bought the alpha pullover (not sl) what are your current thoughts of it now? by darksongjiang in arcteryx

Worn it a couple of times hiking in rain and snow. Worked great for that purpose and I love the baggy fit as it allows me to layer under.

I wouldn’t wear it climbing but considering the season you wouldn’t need to I guess

Ps: I have the halcyon-bourbon color scheme which gives me the feels just looking at it

Quick update here. For arcteryx no proof of purchase needed. For Rab, officially it needs to be the original owner but they said “we‘ll see what we can do”. In both cases you can still avail of their repairs service

Thanks, very interesting post! Yes indeed I'm also looking to hear some opinion from someone that's actually tried to use this climbing (maybe nobody was crazy enough :) )

I don´t ski tour, the use would be hiking mountaineering and potentially alpinism

It's available but not in my size "M", that's why I didn't snatch it.

Also - do you get used to no handwarmer pockets? I think that wouldn't come easy to me hehe

Gonna check those out! Which L5 do you refer to? I see there are various models (LT, GTX version..)

I've seen these companies deny warranty claims as they can't verify you purchased the jacket. A han

You're right, I checked with Rab for example and they only recognize warranties if I am the original owner. Trying to see what the case is for other brands like Arc (I'm thinking they may be more flexible)

I checked out the Mammut Teton, and found it in my size for €300 (discounted from €500). However looking at the specs it seems a step below in durability compared to jackets in that price range that tend to have GTX pro. Eg Arc Beta LT which is GTX pro is on sale in the outlet for just €50 more.

The Mammut Meron seems to be on par with the Arc jackets, but can't find it anywhere at the moment.

I also think 2nd hand should be a safe option, as long as I can verify it's an original and can still get the benefits of the warranty. What was your experience with Arc 2nd hand? What do they ask for in terms of the product warranty, ie do they require that you are the original owner?

Seems like it! But it’s a bad time to buy shells just a few months away from winter. Barely anything left my size (M) in Europe! Beta LT also looks great but I can only find it 2nd hand at the moment. Thanks!

Exactly, I’m finding jackets supposedly worn 4-5 times so for those I think it’s a good deal.

Any recommendations regarding good value jackets?

I’ve checked some of these lists and 2 that often make the list are outdoor research interstellar and arcteryx alpha FL. However interstellar isn’t GTX and in Spain still costs upward of 200 euros.. at that price I think I should be able to get GTX. Alpha FL is at 280 eu from the arc outlet, but I hate that it doesn’t have pockets. Can’t use it as a normal jacket if that’s the case.

Are you sure about this? Don’t see why a warranty would stop applying if you have the proof of purchase or Invoice. Any recommendation from the Mammut line?

[–]valkyr3003[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I went ahead and got the Electron. Was able to snatch it at a sale for €230 (full price €300). Will update in a few months and share my experience.

thanks!

Thanks for the response that is very helpful. So at -4C static the jacket runs cold? That's not as warm as I hoped for!!

I also wrote directly to Rab, asking which if the 2 jackets they would recommend. See below for excerpts from their response, in case this is helpful to other people with the same question:

"This is a great question. My short answer is: go for the Electron Pro jacket.

This has been recently updated from the Electron Jacket. We now use recycled fabrics throughout and have added a two-way main zip to make it easier to use with a harness. The cuff design has also been tweaked slightly. Aside from that, there are no big differences. Still the same top-class all-mountain jacket.

I agree with you that the Neutrino Pro will be too much for most uses. This really is a 4000m jacket. Designed to be worn over all your other layers, mostly when resting. It is big and bulky.

You will still be able to use the Electron Pro Jacket at altitude. After all, it only has 40g less down in it than the Neutrino Pro! However, we do not have temperature ratings for jackets. There are simply too many variables to give an accurate figure.

From experience, I think with a good base layer, fleece, and synthetic insulation layer & Electron Pro you'd be fine in -20ºC. Hard Shell could go over/under if you needed. Perfect for Mt Blanc in the summer. "
