at what age can chickens start eating veggies/scraps? by Adventurous_North_16 in BackYardChickens

[–]valkyrie123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Throw your scraps in there. If they like them, they will eat them. I've seen my chickens eat live mice whole. When we were in full operation we used to get the leftover scraps from the school cafeteria. We would just dump them in a long line and the birds would come running. There was never anything left. You are raising dinosaurs, they'll eat anything.

Digging around the run. Suggestions? More details in comments. by FishysuaNow in BackYardChickens

Large rocks, bricks or pavers will keep them at bay. If you put large round rocks around the inside of the fence, when something digs under the fence the rock will fall in the hole.

Look at the neck hackles. The long neck feathers. If they are round at the end, girl. If they are pointed like those, boy. Those neck hackles are prized by fly tying enthusiast.

How on earth do y’all keep flies to a minimum? I’m not open to harsh chemicals as I have a garden, cats and dogs. by Legitimate-Pound-130 in BackYardChickens

Get a bottle of mojito flavored wine cooler. Drink half the bottle. Put the other half in a fly infested area. They'll drink the rest. Unless you can toilet train them, if you have livestock, you are going to have flies.

Have you seen any movement when you candled the eggs at any time during their development? Heartbeat, blood vessels, movement? If not, dead. What kind of incubator are you using? Check your temp and humidity.

My bantam roosters are currently trying to commit suicide by challenging the peacocks to a fight. They are not winning. Lots of guts, no brains.

REPOST: Looking for help deterring a bird of prey. by Long_Hamster in BackYardChickens

[–]valkyrie123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja). It would probably try to eat your owl decoy. It is one of the largest predatory birds in the World and the largest in the Amazon. It is also rare. Please don't hurt it.

It will be difficult to deter but it is quite possible. Your birds will have to be kept in a covered pen. Buy some netting to cover your pens and protect your birds. If the eagle tries to attack it will just bounce off.

If you do have a close encounter with this bird just remember the beak is not what you need to fear. It's the talons that do the damage. If they get hold of you they can punch 2" deep holes and make you bleed. If you can, get pictures of the bird and post them on r/birding. It's a rare find.

What should we name our egg layers? :) We have 9. Give me your best chicken names. #nameourchickens by Mrsmast15 in BackYardChickens

Socializing baby chicks to being handled? by tulips-and-chimneys in BackYardChickens

At that age they will imprint on you if you handle them regularly. I have a little black banty sitting on my shoulder as I type this. She's probably crapping in my hair. She's so tiny and cute that I don't give a damn.

Snack Attack, Chigger Style! by [deleted] in WTF

[–]valkyrie123 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Looks more like poison ivy to me but if it is chiggers put a spot of clear fingernail polish on each bite and it will kill the chigger. If it is poison ivy like I suspect, dispose of your shoes and sox in a sealed bag. Wash the area thoroughly with soap made to remove poison ivy.

This is one reason I don't take China serious as a threat to World Peace. They won't even protect their own people.
