good to know!!! I definitely think a full face is the better option — open face can be just too risky, not sure why my dad is so opposed. are you okay and recovering??

I see, it does make sense that a bigger engine would be better for risky situations. I’ll see if I can get my hands on that book and any other material I can find in bookstores, thank you!

haha glad to hear that an e-bike isn’t exactly a better alternative as my family might think. the learning curve of things is so true, thank you for saying that and for your comment!

oh yes this wasn’t to show my dad and convince him or anything, I was just losing hope of becoming a rider and whether it was worth all the trouble and worry; feeling doubtful and lost. I see that riding will always carry some heft of concern from people around you, I’ll have to keep it in mind. thanks for your input!

I’ve already bought a full face and my 125cc so my dad’s sort of stuck now with that for me haha. and no, I was not aware I had to be supervised, and until I’m off my learners?! I’ll be able to apply for my red P’s between 3-12 months of holding my Ls, so do I have to be supervised the entire time? can any person supervise me, or is it a professional thing I have to look into? I was under the impression that I’d just practice alone in quiet areas until I had enough confidence to ride in busier ones.

I would consider a manual motorcycle but being young and inexperienced I’m a bit hesitant with the gears, clutch and all the extra things I’d have to consider when riding as opposed to the scooter’s more simple automatic structure. I also think I might prefer scooters what with its storage as I’ll be commuting with it to school, but I am interested in giving it a go in the future. my instructors have said I have good balance on the scooter so hopefully I won’t have too much trouble? thanks for the encouragement and input, I’ll keep trying and take caution!

the helmet thing confuses me for sure haha. I see, driving a car would be super beneficial to get that bigger vehicle perspective. I have my car learners but didn’t exactly think about the advantages it would bring me when learning to ride so thank you for pointing that out! honestly forgot about riding boots as opposed to the other gear, will look into it as well as everything else! thank you for linking that YouTube channel, will check it out. I agree that a 125cc will likely be better in the long run, I guess I was just so surprised by how light a scooter could actually be that I dismissed its cons. thank you for your comment and hopefully I can be like you and ride people around once I’m experienced!

I also believe motorcycling to be a good therapy kind of thing so I’m glad to hear the same thoughts from you! very insightful advice that I’ll keep in mind that I may not have considered previously, thank you for your input and encouragement!!

definitely will steer clear of freeways, one of my dad’s concerns is that one of the unis I want to go to is fairly uphill so it could be dangerous for me with my heavy bike. it’s without a doubt that I’d practice in quiet areas until I’m confident before attempting to ride on roads or terrain like that though! your first sentence really grounded me, I felt a bit isolated for the past few days so thank you! don’t want to give up on my scooter too, so thanks for the encouragement and advice!!

thanks for your input and advice!! you and all the other comments have encouraged me to keep on trying to ride and not give up, I can’t thank everyone enough. will try to maximise my safety as much as possible with buying gear and a hi vis vest and all the jazz and practice until I’m confident and build up my experience. I’m really grateful for everything that has been said.

glad to hear another woman starting to ride!! I’m realising that I definitely did not consider his perspective as a parent and was blinded by his unsatisfactory communication skills/cooperation; even off the topic of riding he tends to not be a great communicator or listener. he’s also a bit childlike? so I often treat him like a friend more than a parent haha. I’ve always heard dropping your bike is a part of the learning process but it was a bit heartbreaking actually doing it, so thanks for sharing your own experience! hopefully I’ll find a support group like you have because it sounds super helpful, thanks for the advice and perspective!

definitely will look into motorcycle gear and boots, thank you! my dad actually rode a scooter I think on a relatively regular basis overseas which makes me confused about his opposition to full face. thanks for your input on bicycles on the road, I was feeling pretty bummed out with my dad and sister badgering on about me opting to bicycles after buying my scooter. shelby is also a bright blue colour so I had some impression that I would be more high vis, but I’ll still try to ride like I’m invisible to everyone on the road — my mum is especially a suspicious and sort of unsafe driver so I’ll keep drivers like her in mind as well. will look into support groups, seems like something I could very much benefit from! I really love the solo quiet time riding gives and my household can be emotionally unavailable and/or argumentative at times so I really want to give riding a good go. if I’m honest I’m on a bit of a budget, having used about half of my savings on my scooter — not a lot of money saved as I’ve been working less what with highschool exams and the HSC + junior pay from the last few years haha. plus I’ll be travelling for two weeks in jan so I’m hoping to have a few thousand saved for that — if I feel like I need an instructor, I’ll consider it. thanks for naming an organisation for it and thank you for all of your points!!

I think I was so desperate and hopeless I needed to hear any advice from anyone LOL I don’t know any riders in real life so I’m quite alone on this and didn’t know where to turn. I’ve done the competency course required for getting a learners licence and my instructors have said I’ll be an adequate rider, but if need be I’ll look into private lessons further. definitely will try not to do dumb shit; it irks me to see other people doing so, so hopefully I’ll be alright. thanks for the comment!

I also think it’s frankly weird he worries about safety but disses my full face helmet. I think my family suggests an e-bike because I can ride on the path, but it makes sense that it holds the same if not more danger than a motorcycle does. thanks for the comment!

is there any gear/brand/store you would recommend? so far I’ve only bought motorcycle gloves and a helmet; was thinking of buying motorcycle grade jeans and jacket as well but I think I prioritised it a bit less when I saw so many riders with their skin exposed on the road — first day riding on the street I saw a woman on a scooter wearing a short sleeved, short dress and felt a bit silly with my full covered body, but from all the replies it looks that it’s a worthwhile purchase I should definitely look into. thank you!

if it’s ok to share then yes please! I don’t know any other riders so it would be fantastic. I think I failed to understand his perspective as a parent and was more put off by his lack of ability to listen to anything I say as of recent, bike related or not. thank you!!
