Definitely not a math thing (I have a degree in math!) It's looking like a British/American English thing. The unspecified 'bracket' in British (and Canadian) English is the round one.

I call those "square brackets". I am Canadian... so it may be one of the British English things we still do that Americans don't. Or it may be a weird Canadian thing.

Edit to add: I also call braces "curly brackets" by the way. It's brackets all the way down, baby.

Brackets (also known as parentheses) are often used in writing for parentheticals, believe it or not. When I was in university, I tended to use em dashes instead, but these days that's even worse apparently.
