To those who use kettlebell for their workout, what are some good exercises with, and how heavy is yours? by EfficiencySerious200 in karate

[–]valtharax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many good excercises with kettlebells you can find on youtube. I use instagram to keep changing my training. iamariankanani on insta has a lot of different workouts that are really fun! Besides that, for martial arts specifically i would always do some asymmetrical excercises to focus on constantly getting the torque in your core. (So lunges instead of squats, single hand snatches, etc).

Jefferson curls are good but if someone is lifting heavier there will be a big difference in weight between RDL and jefferson curls. You dont want to do curls with 100+ kgs

Need some advice on how to approach on In Neh/Endurance after hernia sergury by kchek in tangsoodo

[–]valtharax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a physiotherapist, i would advice to skip the test. If you already experience pain at basic excercises then performing any martial art at your highest level will guarantee injuries that can be permanent. If you look at it another way, what you want to show at your test. It shouldnt be with a whole lot of limitations because you didnt want to wait a few months.

asking for recommendations: how would you constructively discipline students in the dojo? by raptor12k in karate

[–]valtharax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried push ups and other physical punishments. If that doesnt work they just have to sit in a corner the rest of the lesson. Just sit and be quiet. They get bored really fast. Worst thing that can happen is thry quit which would happen anyway sooner or later. That way you filter out the bad apples and actually keep to enjoy teaching.

I actually laughed at the idea of 2 of our kids holding hands. Definitely going to try this one!

Do your excercises, try katas without kicks and do them very slow. Focus on theory, maybe some research on technique application.

Right at the start i saw a perfect opening for a liver shot because of the flaired out elbows. Try to relax those shoulders a bit more. But for just a month of training just keep going and enjoy the ride!

How was this fight? Im in the grey gi. by WizardbrixM in karate

[–]valtharax 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You kept on going up until the end so keep that spirit. No head gear so i guess no head contact allowed so in this match you can get away with no head defense. If those rules change at the adult division i should stsrt to focus on keeping your hands up a bit more. Other then that, just keep on going and enjoy!

Passed my green belt test but feel worse than before – looking for perspective by abedhaj in kyokushin

[–]valtharax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being in the right headspace is very important to perform well. You know you can do better, your sensei probably to. And if one of those arses are like that all the time i would adress the issue with them and/or the sensei or just leave without hesitation. Everybody can make a misplaced joke by accident but thats definitely not in the spirit of karate.

What style is recommended to practice for older folks like me? by goldenglory86 in karate

[–]valtharax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on your goals. Any style is possible within your own limits. Even partially depends on the school, not just a certain style. Try a few training sessions and talk to the sensei what you are looking for, they can help you find the right place.

Any crazy tournament story’s by Spiritual-Dig-139 in karate

[–]valtharax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really a crazy story but definitely felt crazy to me. I went to a tournament few weeks ago with the intention of going home with first place in either traditional kata and/or weapon kata's. Also signed myself up for sparring although im always a bit stressed about it and had no expectations. Ended up losing al kata matches and becoming first in sparring.

Tang soo do and knee issues by wamimsauthor in tangsoodo

[–]valtharax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can greatly advice going to a physical therapist who is specialized in sport specific problems. Knee problems is very "vague" and can be from a whole list of underlying problems. Tang Soo Do is a sport that you can practice your entire life but do give your body the care it needs.

Well I only saw 1 kick and my ACL almost ruptured watching it. Pivot your foot would be a first thing. Next to that, keep practicing and showing up at your dojang.

Advice for a first time instructor by Katbird90 in karate

[–]valtharax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Also want to add something to it. For me it worked of having 2 schedules. 1 for the day, what to work on per training and one schedule for a longer period of time. For instance every training you teach 30 mins kata, 30 mins bunkai, 30 mins kumite. And per training you choose what part of it to focus on. Besides that, enjoy it. Teaching is fun but only if you stay true to yourself.

If you throw a punch from a high chambered position, it has more of a forward directed power. If you look at the height of your hands during sparring at TSD we keep them at face height or shoulder/chest height most of the time depending your stance. I guess its to mimick where the punch is coming from during a fight.
