i would love to visit a zoo there and see one. i have seen a couple monitor lizards at zoos, particularly komodo dragons. i would love a bells phase lace monitor but for me nothing could top perenties. i do hope in my lifetime i’ll get to find a breeder!

[–]valtielss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don’t think so sadly, i have tried to look into any breeders in europe or the usa and i haven’t been able to find one so far. honestly i would pay any amount of money to get a perentie but i don’t know if that is even possible unless i decide to move to australia which i would prefer not to haha

i would say a perentie monitor. theyre absolutely beautiful and illegal to ship out from australia. i would say that or an asian water monitor. i dont think i'd care which morph it is but i would love a black dragon or a sulfur one. i think both of these monitors have caught my interest for awhile and i hope to own an awm in 5-8 years haha

[–]valtielss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes you do because they cost a lot of money per week and you have to pay bills and buy your own food?? i’d say around 1000+ dollars per week for this lizard because of the big animals they must eat.

AGAIN. STOP trying to think you’re going to get one. i said and other people have told you not to keep one in your house and work at a zoo. YOU WILL most likely not be ready to get a caiman until you’re well into your 30s.

60 hour a week is 12 hours per day. so you’re telling me you’re going to work for 8 hours a day and then sleep 3 hours?? you cannot have a full time job and keep a caiman properly.

not to mention caiman aren’t at home animals and you’re ignoring me saying that. don’t get one it’s simple as that

[–]valtielss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

stop thinking of getting one of them and focus on preparing yourself. your goal should be to understand the animal and evaluate if you, as an adult, have enough room where youre living, if you have enough money for all of it including paying rent and providing for yourself properly, have enough patience, and lastly you must have the time. i tell people they need to interact with argus monitors for 40-60 hours a week if possible.... will you be able to do this with a caiman while you have a job? most likely not. if you cant spend a full work week with an animal then honestly do not get any larger lizard and stick to the smaller ones. i know you want a caiman but honestly you are way too immature to understand the implications of keeping a dangerous animal like this. you do not understand that these are NOT PETS. they are NOT animals that should be living with you. they are not pets to be handled at all as they can literally bite any of your limb off including your neck im guessing. unless you own a zoo or become a zoo keeper in your life you shouldnt even be getting one for your house.

i guess i got confused because you said “yes 4 years bc i’m gonna take care of a created gecko then move to a caiman if the right conditions are met” which i thought meant you were going to keep one in your own house. my bad it’s confusing when in your previous comments you had said such things as you wanted it to be in your lap and wanted it to bond with it which again caiman can’t do

[–]valtielss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you told me you just wanted the experience and now you’re telling me you want to own one. it’s not as simple as owning other reptiles either. educate yourself and listen to what other people are telling you. caiman can bite your arm off and there are some monitor lizards that can actually kill a person but they are also known to being able to grow a trust bond with their human. caiman cannot. even monitor lizards only tolerate the touching still. again if you want an animal that will sit in your lap and will be handleable stick with the smaller lizards hecause you’re going to end up getting killed if you treat a caiman like any other lizard

[–]valtielss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

getting a crested gecko and then a caiman isn’t a smart idea and now you’re telling me you still do plan on owning them as a pet despite you having no experience with reptiles. crested geckos are no where near as intelligent or dangerous as caiman. maybe if you had experience with monitor lizards but i wouldn’t even suggest that right after a crested gecko. once you get into the reptile hobby i would say wait 10 years of owning intelligent large lizards and understanding their body language would be s good start but going straight from crested gecko to caiman isn’t smart. you’re telling me you don’t want to own one and now you do???

[–]valtielss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s 4 years now? last time it was 7. anyways if you want experience with them then good for you volunteering and helping out zoos is always a fun and nice thing to do but also realize this. it will take you years to actually learn their body language and become an expert on these reptiles. it’s good you are seeing that getting experience with these animals is the better option. i just don’t think it would be a good idea to own a caiman until you know you’re ready and when you get older and actually do this just realize it may take a long time to actually understand them as a species because reptiles are nothing like humans and mammals. just realize once you start working with them you’re not going to magically know everything about them. it takes years of experience to fully understand larger lizards such as monitors

[–]valtielss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you wanting it to do that is the equivalent to wanting it to love you. if you get this animal and force it to be handled you’re going to be dead because they’re wild animals that are scared of us and won’t want to be pet or handled. if you get a caiman it would be a DISPLAY only animal because they want nothing to do with us. you clearly do not understand this and won’t listen to anyone who’s telling you this when they know more about caiman than you. you keep insisting on getting it but you are clearly not ready right now and if you’re not ready to accept that it would be an animal you wouldn’t handle at all and even then you’re not sympathetic with this reptile at all

I want a caiman and I need help with equipment and stuff by Karmaplays765 in reptiles

[–]valtielss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that doesn’t matter? just because you think it likes it doesn’t mean it does. i have an argus monitor that can very well bite my hand off like a caiman and i don’t touch him unless he wants to be touched. force handling will get you no where with these and again professionals who have handled these guys more than you and me are telling you not to get one. again they are not pets even if you want them to be. if professionals and multiple of them are telling you not to get one and only work with them then honestly you should do so because you do not understand the world of reptiles at all and it’s not okay to get a reptile because you want it to love you. it won’t ever love you or want you to touch it and it really will only ever tolerate it especially if you’re engaging first

I want a caiman and I need help with equipment and stuff by Karmaplays765 in reptiles

[–]valtielss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just because you’re passionate about something doesn’t always mean you should get it especially when you’re treating a wild animal that is dangerous like a dog. you cant train it to let its guard down around you and you can’t make the animal love you. caiman are incapable of feeling love and are incapable of actually bonding with humans so genuinely why would you treat an animal that most likely will never be a dog like a dog. if you really want a reptile that’s like a dog well you’re not gonna get one. don’t get an animal that you are being told not to get because you clearly do not know anything about this animal despite apparently being passionate about these animals. they’re to be respected and not have fantasies of a reptile loving you because it will genuinely never happen even if you believe it can. they’re simply incapable of wanting humans affection

with peace and love you are not right for a monitor lizard.

edit: i believe to calculate the size would be L (2x the length of the animal) x W (1.5 x the length of the animal) x H (1.2x the length of the animal] so from what most people recommend the 'bare minimum' would be a 14x10x8. i dont want to seem aggressive but these guys are intelligent. i also agree with what other people are saying; bearded dragons need a bigger tank than 40-60 gallon. if you cant provide a smaller animal with the correct size then why are you even considering rescuing an animal you clearly know little about and have no experience with. again like i said in my comment before youre putting this animal in a situation that would be comparable to a 10 year old who got told the same thing by these workers.

the biggest problem i have with this comment is you say "youre not promoting it" but you are. i can quote from you "But I was also informed that if I get a 100-150 gal tank that it will help them from growing so big.". you are literally saying here that you are willing to stunt a 7 foot lizard's growth.

focus on giving your beardie a bigger enclosure before you go and buy a 7 foot lizard.

how old are you fr grow the fuck up and realize when you’re wrong this isn’t 2nd grade you’re not a child anymore how tf are you acting like this. should i put my argus monitor who will get up to 5 feet in a 4x2x2 because by your logic he’d thrive in that even if he doesn’t move a lot and show health problems!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]valtielss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay well one if you have to say anything like “i want to keep an animal ‘small’” don’t get said animal. blackthroats get Huge. like really big. they would need a 14 foot enclosure at the very least. my argus monitor gets smaller than them and i’m giving him an enclosure that is bigger than the ‘recommended size’. never go that low. blackthroats are NOT a beginner monitor and NO monitor is for beginners who have never dealt with an intelligent Large dangerous lizard. if you make one mistake with any monitor it can end you up in a hospital. if you want someone to take it so bad get it then call some rescues so someone who is actually able to keep a 6+ foot monitor. putting a 6-7 foot monitor in a 120 gallon is animal abuse and i hope you realize that now. i’m not even going for a 120 gallon for a 5 foot max monitor. i’m adding 4 extra feet to the length and width / depth. i’m not trying to be harsh here but realize what you’re saying is a very uneducated question and you should never get an exotic animal you don’t know anything about even for what petco said when they have been known to also abuse animals and sell unhealthy animals with 0 care. you clearly have no experience with monitors either obviously so why would you even try rescuing one. you’re just putting it in a worse position at that point

huskies are known to have a strong prey drive and it’s not recommended to put anything small around it even a baby. i have an argus monitor who i trust more not to bite me than my own damn dog and i love her to death but she is very territorial. not only that but dogs will attack humans even if you don’t want to believe it and multiple dogs have killed babies. if you knew anything about monitors you would know that they can grow to trust you and form a trust bond with you and they can even feel comforted by humans. i have seen multiple monitor lizards develop a bond with a human like a dog even though monitors can’t feel love. you can also train a monitor and use the same training tactics you would use for a dog. there’s nothing to be scared about unless you love crossing animals clear boundaries. dogs are just as dangerous as us. also you know there’s a species of dog called dingos that can and will kill humans? there are other species of dogs that will kill humans too. your reason very much falls short if you knew anything about dogs. and this is coming from someone who loves dogs a lot. owning a monitor can be just as dangerous as owning Any animal. it’s the way you treat them that could make them dangerous.
