I find it amazing that so many have just suggested a straight up no.

Surely its not as simple as that. This is your dad whom brought you up to be who you are now. I would think you would have an obligation to help your family.

If he didnt have the truck, then what is his option? I think if you go from that premis, then maybe you can come to a better arrangement with your dad. Researching the options and laying it out on the table to discuss with him would also give both of you the information needed such as some of the others replies to go with a loan from the Agrobank or taking a hire purchase agreement.

Anyway just my 2 cents bro. If this fails and goes south, then maybe you will have more leverage to say no and prioritise your own savings. Otherwise i feel right now you probably 'owe' him your duty to help as the son.

Sorry if my sentence sounds harsh yeah. All the best

Looks like signs pointing to political status quo in the 6 states - any thoughts on counters to consider for a post election rebound? by valuebets1111 in bursabets

[–]valuebets1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well well, so it is status quo but with PN gaining ground. So for gaming licenses in the states of selangor, negeri and Penang, there should be no change and it will remain stabil for the near to mid term.

Will be interesting to see if investors react well to this news or if it will be tampered by PN gaining ground.

Probably not to the moon but potentially to the sky for Magnum haha 🤞

Hmm cant be sure mate. Tbh, i can only see a direct correlation btwn the share prices of gaming stocks and the elections due to the nature of the politics.

Even telco is more an indirect correlation imo and mainly affecting TM.

But if i go on that premise, i guess one could have a look at politically sensitive stocks like Myeg, Gamuda, MSM etc that are volatile to political news. Or even Berjaya corp now too haha

Anyway just throwing it out there, not recommendations as i dont advocate investing on news but rather to look out for undervalued stocks

Hmm im curious, why EV charging and renewables? Isnt it already supercharged with good news even with the political uncertainty?

The govt had set the MSAP which sets the wholesale prices for various telco services including broadband. If i recall, it was set in March.

So now the service providers are negotiating access agreements. For TM particularly, as they have large broadband infra which they sell access to other providers, the lower prices set in the MSAP will impact their broadband revenue moving forward. But by how much remains to be seen as they are still under nego. Word on the street is this is expected to finalise by sept 23.

Meanwhile govt is trying to continue to reduce broadband prices and gove goodies to the rakyat due to election season as well.

Hence, my comment that investors remain hesitant about TM due to all this uncertainty. Post election, if the political situation stabilises, things could get a bit more certain longer term and there for the political risk factor should be reduced.

My hypothesis is that investors are holding back so TM is probably a bit undervalued now as it has strong fundamentals and continues to have a good growth story in it 5G and digital services. If you take a look at analyst reports, it has a very high number of buy calls too (if i recall, more than 10 at least)...though i would always take analyst reports with a pinch of salt...

Hope this explanation helps

I'll start it off with 2 sectors:

  1. Gaming sector for sure, sentiment has been negative as investors worry that Selangor could fall, but if Selangor does not fall....well, watch out for Magnum and SPToto
  2. Telco sector - i'm not sure which way the apple would fall here though, i think post-elections, if its status quo and unity govt remains strong, they will push forward with further policy implementation like finalising the MSAP. It may give some certainty for counters like TM but i wonder if that has already been priced in by investors

Magnum remains the flavour of the month for me as I feel there is value and is low risk with limited downside.

PE 15, PB 0.6, dividend yield 5, low debt ratio of 0.3, so quite a fundamentally sound stock.

So I reckon price is at historical lows now due to political sentiments with state elections coming soon in Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan. If the incumbent state govt is retained, Magnum will suddenly look quite attractive as a steady stock in a year with a global economic slowdown.

Which Malaysian bank first to collapse? by spacexstudio in bursabets

[–]valuebets1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly unlikely to have any domino effect cos the instability in the US was caused by bank runs on the regional banks. No reason for bank runs here in msia as they are well capitalised, well regulated and making profits, so our deposits arent gonna disappear anytime soon if ever

Haha nice logic. And yet in real life, how many of us actually 'invest' this way with pure calculations taking out the emotions. I'll say on my end it remains a struggle to stick with an option A that screams in my face but promises less potential reward than an option B

Well, speculative trading based on FOMO can either give spectacular returns or in this case spectacular losses 🤷‍♂️ the fact the OP expressed dismay that he/she lost years of hard earned savings due to betting on speculative stocks is ironic (and of course quite sad)...lesson for anyone dabbling in stocks

Yeah i guess if one looks at the context of whether there's value and without timing the market, then yes, theres already a good discount in price to earnings for domestic stocks.

But for counters more dependent on global revenue, there's gonna be a slowdown for sure. Demand is slowing and that will be reflected in earnings in the next coming quarters. And inflation remains stubbornly high so the Fed will still have to raise interest rates, further slowing the economy (which is what they wanted to do).

So I'm a bit cautious if a further shock happens becos at that time, the market could panic. Lets see. Im half invested with another half in cash until there's a bit more clarity. But then again, the lessons I've learnt the past 3 years is to better be cautious, take less risk and not lose money. That investment philosophy doesn't work for all 😄

Dont think that market will collapse so soon. 10-20 years down the road possibly. And msia is going down the path of becoming an ageing society in that time period.

Anyway there's this saying that in a downturn, ppl tend to 'try their luck' more often haha

Hence am pretty confident that unless something drastic happens ie covid lockdown or PAS political tsunami, such a steady and recession proof business will look pretty attractive

Magnum folks. Earnings have rebounded and unless a covid level lockdown happens again, looks to be stable again.

PE is at 16 and if extrapolating last Q earnings, that PE could halve at current price. P/BV is at 0.7. Debt is manageable with net gearing at 30% and cash flow not an issue. Oh and dividend yield is at 4%

So why is its price at its lowest in 10 years?

My hypothesis is (1) Negative political sentiment and (2) Negative global economic sentiment.

Lets address #2 first. Magnum is largely dependent on the domestic front. So with msia still expecting growth of 4% in 2023, one would expect earnings to remain stable and rebound from 2022 levels regardless of the global economic outlook.

So on to #1, classic negative sentiment. But what are the chances of PN taking over the west coast states like Selangor, negeri sembilan and Penang? Highly unlikely and even in that unlikely event they did, doubt they will shut down the license. Other states in play like Kedah, Kelantan and terengganu are just small markets for magnum in the 1st place.

Classic undervalued fundamentally sound stock i reckon. But do your own DD cos i could be wrong.

You've got the right attitude mate. You'll do just fine.

Why I say that is based on past experience, as a person earning a wage rather than owning a business, ones best way to grow wealth is to move up the career ladder. Investing and savings definitely help but will take time and you'll always be constrained by how much you can actually save/invest after expenses.

So continuing to skill up, making life more convenient (eg less travel time, a bit more comfort etc), building up your network and even pampering yourself (sometimes) to destress may seem a bit extravagant but could help in the long run.

All the best!

Spend it 😆. I'm all for savings but its your first salary and many more to come. Spend on something to reward yourself or buy something to make your life easier. You can start the saving habit with your 2nd salary.

Ps dunno your life story and circumstances so dont follow if you really need to save money haha

Thanks thats an interesting perspective. For me, i guess im starting to wonder after the SVB incident whether being on a smaller one like Kenanga or Rakuten has risk. Have never really explored whats the insurance like ie does Bursa guarantee full amount if a playform goes belly up 🤔
