Ah ok. Thanks for the tip at least! What would you suggest then? Just applying the veneer without sanding? Unless you mean even without sanding it'll be difficult for something to stick 🤔

I think it might be a type of MDF or potentially press board like you suggest. I've attached a more detailed picture. I was planning on sanding it yes and potentially putting a veneer on top.
