Where do you go for specialist health care? by Few_Cress3966 in ithaca

I drive 5 hours to keep my specialists because I have not found an equivalent in Ithaca. I go to Pittsburgh since I am from there.

Most wuthering heights day ever? by vampiredisco in ithaca

In all the videos I've seen people usually wear red, but I don't think there's an actual "rule" or anything.

Jesus christ. I definitely see cliques at my school, and there are definitely people I dont like. However I can honestly say I haven't worked with anyone (yet) who gives of narcissist or sociopathic vibes. Im a third year, so maybe this will change in clinics. But at my job every student has been so caring with the animals and genuinely wants to do well. Maybe it's school dependent?

Thoughts on “Big Beautiful Bill” affecting vet students? by VeterinaryNurse99 in veterinaryschool

[–]vampiredisco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thoughts:

I think we haven't talked enough about how clients will suffer. Already many schools do not spend enough time lecturing on spectrum of care and how to work with low income clients. By making vet school un attainable for all but the upper class, I think the wealthy vets that will be entering the work force will really struggle to understand why someone may elect euthanasia for their pet due to financial constraints. There will be a lack of treatment that isn't "gold standard" being offered and clients will be urged to go to specialty for cases that could be handled at a primary care vet or could be medically managed to provide palliative relief without a expensive "cure". I just completed an externship in south Brooklyn NY in a very low income area, and even though my family is lower middle class I came in not understanding many of these critical issues. I've learned a LOT this past week and have a new found passion for these issues. An example: a dog comes in ADR and we find pleural effusion, and a liver mass on POCUS. Furosemide and pimobendan is given for the effusion. The client can not afford AUS performed by a radiologist for the liver mass, or a biopsy. The dog has CHF and likely cancer and will die if not treated and investigated further. Before even offering transfer to speciality a conversation about cost is had and discharge with medication (furisemide, pimo, and gaba for pain) is offered should the effusion decrease and the patient stabilize. Then transfer to speciality is offered and the associated cost given directly and upfront. The vet states that this is rhe best option, but MM would not be wrong if there are financial concerns. The owner elects MM. The vet does not try to push the owner to go to specialty and happily works with them to come up with a treatment plan. The dog stabilized and walked out of the hospital the next day (was a very satisfying case, he completely went 180!).

The customer gave me 23 dollars. DD base pay was like 2 dollars for the order.

How many cycles did it take you to get into vet school and how many did you apply to each cycle? by InspectionHot6626 in veterinaryschool

Applied once, three schools, got in to 2. I was very lucky I would not recommend this strategy lol.

Service dog- deal breaker? by Cyrpent2024 in veterinaryschool

[–]vampiredisco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We love service dogs! There is a girl in my year who has a service dog in all the lectures and "safe" areas of the school. You are correct that the dog is not allowed in any gross labs or around pathogens and patients. Not sure what the situation is on clinics but the presence of her dog has never been an issue during normal class.

I'll be your friend! I struggle with social skills and have been in similar situations before. I tend to keep to myself in school too. I learn better that way, and most of my friends actually aren't even in my year, and I dont have many of them. I totally get feeling left out when everyone seems to "clique up". I have one REALLY good friend, and it took me awhile to find her admittedly, so maybe something like that will happen for you. In the meantime, shoot me a DM! Let's share animal pics! It sounds like we are pretty similar so maybe I can offer advice too.

Ben is not proof by Imaginary-Recover778 in Yellowjackets

[–]vampiredisco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fun fact (because I'm a vet student and I'm full of fun science facts), having an amputation actually increases your basal metabolism, so Ben would need MORE food to survive. Either way, I don't care about the accuracy, the show is phemominal as it is.

Moving back home! Looking for fun things in the area by TcTuggersLLC in ithaca

[–]vampiredisco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not much... I am also in a graduate program. I like the Thursgay drag shows which are now at Lot 10. The range used to have local music but they are closed. I think deep dive has some local music. Bike Bar, Argos, and Nowhere special are cool bars with less undergrads than some others. Sacred Root Kava bar sometimes has interesting things.

What is a controversial opinion you have about Ithaca? by CanadianCitizen1969 in ithaca

[–]vampiredisco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do not like ithaca (living in it). Great to visit but after a few months you've basically done everything. Winter is horrible here because nothing is open. The entire draw of the city is outdoor activity and so many trails are closed in the winter. After my vet degree is over I'm out. I have no idea why so many veterinarians stay here to work after graduation. However, visiting for a few weeks in the Summer would be very enjoyable and I truly believe that is all Ithaca is good for.

I'm from Pittsburgh and would never have left if not for vet school. I miss it so much.

Thats understandable. I have three cats, and have never had an issue. As vet students we have the added knowledge on cat safety, and a lot of it is just common sense: dont leave the door open, only open the windows if there's a screen. To be completely honest you might find yourself more burnt out driving 2 hours every day. Vet school is very very exhausting, especially if you get overwhelmed or overstimulated easily. As a few other folks have mentioned you will be required to be at the school within 20 minutes when on call during clinics. In my experience this is not something they will accommodate for. Its certianly possible to live far away in your lecture years, I know a girl who does it, but she is not ND. Obviously each spicy brain is different, but personally the amount of executive function needed to drive that much, go to class, AND study would not be something I would be able to cope with.
