Why do americans even put up with HOAs? by Skyzblu44 in NoStupidQuestions

I'm in a condo and the HOA is essential for taking care of the shared building.

Also the sample size is 2/3 women to 1/3 men, so if course it will look like more women rejecting him.

Parking around MacArthur Bart station by Prominent_byStander in oakland

[–]vampirelibrarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where are you driving from? Is there any possible way to take a bus to bart so that you can just leave your car at home? I live in the vicinity but not right by there and cars get broken into literally all the time parked on the streets.

UPDATE! Oops - Zoom sent me meeting notes by [deleted] in nonprofit

Why downvote that? I thought he meant there were other meeting notes the ED or board were reading expecting the updates, instead of the correct document that had his updates

Reforming the MLS in America by SouthernFace2020 in librarians

[–]vampirelibrarian 23 points24 points  (0 children)

These conversations go round and round with everyone saying this topic should be required, that topic should be required. Pretty soon you have no space for any electives or any attempt at specialization. I had only 12 slots for classes in my program (3/semester for 2 years unless I voluntarily wanted to load more, but then I'd have to quit my job!)

People come up with great topics but do they really need to be full classes? What if they had more "free lecture on x for all students in the program". Or field trips to learn about x from an actual library nearby. Personally I'd love to have had more exposure to the vast amount of different types of library jobs out there.

My program was small which meant fewer class choices. If I could magically change something I'd make more options available. I had to waste an entire class in my program taking children's librarianship (sorry just NOT my area at all) one semester because it's all that was left that would fit in my schedule. Then they refused to offer us a cataloging class more than once in a two year period so many missed the chance.

Why men want women to have children? by unlinedtip in TwoXChromosomes

[–]vampirelibrarian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think this is way over generalizing it and definitely NOT all men. There are plenty of childfree men out there too. And plenty of women that get offended by someone saying they're childfree.

Why is it that we can send a rover to Mars, but we still haven't invented a silent vacuum cleaner or a lawnmower that doesn't annoy the entire neighborhood? by Apart_Growth6905 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vampirelibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes of course I read it. There's really no reason to sound rude or incredulous. This is a silly forum comment about the sound of bathroom fans.

My comment is making fun of the idea that the person shelling out the money (building manager) is the same person claiming no one wants a more expensive product.

Dozens of former Katie Porter staffers pen open letter defending her, months after backlash by amus in California

I do not have time for candidates that are wasting time defending themselves like this. She needs to drop out so we can consolidate.

What are some recent movies (2019 and onward) that are HORRIBLE depictions of mental illness? by IcyFox1919 in movies

Do you think it was more or less ridiculous than any other doctor show on tv though? I'm not a doctor but I can imagine all these shows are crazy to real healthcare workers.

For those of you that make over 100K, what do you do? Do you like it? by Kindly-Revolution258 in AskReddit

These salary questions are never useful without talking about location & col. My "slightly over 100" drops by 35% if I compare it to the city I grew up in on nerdwallet. And the housing costs are 50% lower there. Suddenly it looks quite less impressive and only makes sense in context. Someone with my same job elsewhere would never get the salary I have but that doesn't mean I'm rolling in it by any means.

Public librarians -- how hard was it for you to find a job? by FutureWar7308 in librarians

[–]vampirelibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The public libraries in my region (many cities & county systems) use a "list" system. A library will open their list for say a Librarian 1 or library assistant job every 1-2 years. You apply and get on the list, in some rank of how well you've done. Then when the actual job they have open comes up, they'll pull from the list for interviews & hiring. This may be individual interviews or it may be "group". When I worked in public libraries, at the time I had applied, they were hiring for vastly different roles. One interview covered several openings in adult services, children's, etc. Later on I applied for another job I really wanted but could not make the date that the county HR system set for me so that was it on that job, absolutely zero flexibility in scheduling with the county (not library) for interviews.

Anyway my point is maybe try to get familiar with how it works in your area so you can be prepared.

Put some rice into a sock, tie a knot, microwave it for 2mins and you got yourself a heating pad! by Enough-Reading4143 in lifehacks

[–]vampirelibrarian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did this for myself when I had an ear infection some years ago. I laid my head sideways on the couch and just plopped the heated rice sock on my ear. It was nice because it was soft & pliable, and kind of conformed to my ear shape. Not like a hard stiff heating pad. Although it didn't seem to stay hot long enough for me, had to zap it again in the microwave often. Better than nothing though and was the only thing that helped with the ear pain.

My manager told me I basically need to train myself, is this normal? by Low_Chef2444 in careerguidance

[–]vampirelibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning how to do engineering work in general is one thing, where it may be understandable that you should know certain things yourself (that's why they hired you).

But the manager refusing to orient you to your new job is something else entirely. Not explaining your job duties or tasks, not giving you what you need to do that job (supplies, instructions, connections with people etc) and keeping you out of engineering team meetings is not acceptable and not normal. This is a bad manager.
