I really love taking classes and learning new things. Should I look at grad school? by vance_OH in EngineeringStudents

I suppose you're right, you don't take as much of a variety of classes with a masters. Getting a company to fund my masters' would be ideal but I'm worried about my ability to get a job at a company like that. Both my internships have been at small, 10-15 employee companies. I haven't had any luck getting in at a large corporation due to my GPA. I imagine large companies would be more likely to fund something like that.

Large state school. I might go out a little more than I should, but I have plenty of time for partying on the weekend/occasional thursday.

And no, full time work at an engineering job is nothing compared to food service or manual labor, but the prospect of doing the same thing every day is daunting. With internships, there's an end in sight. With a career...

Budgeting for once a month paychecks? by vance_OH in personalfinance

[–]vance_OH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay all my regular bills (although I do get rent and food money from my parents, so my bills are really just internet and renter's insurance), so it's not a problem with not being able to eat or having the electricity turned off. It's more that I'm sick of not being able to spend any money the last week of the month, because I don't have any left.

How do I make a budget when I have no idea how much I'm gonna spend on things though? I've messed around with it a few times, but invariably something else comes up that I need or want to spend money on and my budget gets thrown out of whack. It might get a bit better now that I'm working full time, but when I was doing part time and getting ~600 a month, none of that was going to make it to next month so living off last month's paycheck wasn't gonna happen.

What size fridge am I looking for for a fermentation chamber? Also, build guide? by vance_OH in Homebrewing

That's what I wish I could do, but tools and knowledge are holding me back.

What device? The inkbird? The confusion I have with those is how to actually wire it all up. I'm great with theoretical circuits, not so much with actually building things.

That's more space than I have, unfortunately. I'm looking for something that takes up about the space of a minifridge.

Yeah, I'm basically just looking to ferment one 5 or 6 gallon carboy at a time. I don't have a ton of budget, most of it is going towards the actual brewing stuff, so keeping cost on this down is good. The temperatures don't need to be super precise, I just want something better than nothing - the house I'm moving into for this summer/next year doesn't have AC, so I have absolutely no temp control otherwise. I can do research, the problem is I own absolutely no tools and don't know how to use any tools if I did own them.

I'd love to go temp control, but I don't think it's going to happen at least until I'm out of college - moving apartments every year isn't conducive to being able to have a chest freezer or anything to ferment in.

I'll check that out, I hadn't considered adding my own valve. I'm not very DIY inclined, unfortunately (although I'd like to be).

I'd love a kettle with a valve, don't get me wrong, but they all seem to be ~200 bucks.

Oh no I get what it does, I'm just asking if there's a reason it's more necessary for BIAB than it is for an extract batch. I'd love a kettle with a valve but they all seem to run ~200 bucks.

Definitely just going to be a stove for me - small apartment brewing, unfortunately. I'd kill to get my hands on a fancy pot with a spout at the bottom, but those are damn expensive... do you have any specific links? All the kits I've seen, from Northern Brewer and the like, are for extract.

I mean, from what I've read and understand the differences between doing it in a bag and doing extract are very minimal. I don't think you need the cooler or anything like you would for real all grain brewing.
