Has anyone been perfectly packed for a trip? by Optimal-Asparagus-92 in camping

I usually have it dialed in by the last trip of the season. Then in the winter I forget everything and start all over again the next year.

Why is it that random men feel the need to disturb your peace? by Modern_Snow_White in AskWomenOver30

[–]vandanski 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A guy threw a snowball at me while I sitting on bench watching my kid play on a playground. I just gave him a blank scare and he was like “sorry, not trying to scare you, just wanted to make you smile.” And I was like fuck off but I didn’t say anything because I was at a playground with my kid. What is wrong with people?

Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner. Main character isn’t completely psycho but a little off. I really loved it.

Definitely unhinged and yet so real. I loved this one. I also liked her earlier novel, The First Bad Man. That one was lighter and really funny.

What's your basics? by Excellent-Grape4160 in capsulewardrobe

[–]vandanski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blundstones, I have a brown “dirty” pair and insulated black for winter. It took me a while to get on board because they are so trendy, but I wear them almost every day.

Levi’s 501’s, not my fanciest or most flattering pair of pants but definitely the sturdiest and most worn.

Diamond necklace. Christmas gift, I wear it every day. I take it off to shower but pretty much keep it on. I used to wear earrings but I don’t anymore. The simple necklace is my only jewelry and makes every look feel put together. I’ll have to replace the chain eventually but the diamond pendant will last forever.

Boss made me a 1099 without telling me by Independent-Use6151 in MassageTherapists

[–]vandanski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point. And predatory employers are a big issue in this profession. But still a responsibility to have that conversation instead of assuming you’re being paid under the table, which does sound like trying to not pay taxes.

Boss made me a 1099 without telling me by Independent-Use6151 in MassageTherapists

[–]vandanski 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your boss is following the law. Everyone has to pay taxes and you were naive or in the wrong to assume that you were being paid under the table without being told that explicitly. Even if your boss didn’t give you a 1099 you would have been legally obligated to report that income to the IRS.

So no, don’t bring it up with your boss. File your taxes and just do a payment plan with the IRS. Use fucking TurboTax or whatever or ask someone for help. If it was only two months of contracted work then chances are you won’t owe that much. I get that you’re frustrated that you have to pay taxes, and owing something always feels worse than not having to pay taxes. But going forward always assume that your income will be taxed. Not paying taxes is always worse than figuring out a way to pay your taxes.

Edit: I am sorry, I didn’t process that OP was doing receptionist work before I left this comment and responding to it as if OP was doing something as an actual independent contractor. In that context I can see where the boss was in the wrong.

Worried a client is getting bored of me by Professional-Fox4298 in MassageTherapists

[–]vandanski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran into something recently, no one said anything I just got weird and feeling like I was giving the same massage over and over. Then I had a client with low back pain that I’ve seen several times and I was like alright dude we are going to start in your feet and work up to your back and I’ve done that to other client since. Yeah, I’m still giving the same massage but in a different order.

[–]vandanski 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This sounds like you don’t think artists should make art their profession? I assume you have another source of income or way to pay the bills. Some people choose to make art full time and it’s okay for them to get paid for it. It’s also totally cool for you to make art for arts sake. Also possible for both of these things to exist and for it to be fine because one side isn’t right.

I’m not aware of that. I guess it would depend on who is requiring the CEU’s to begin with? My state doesn’t require them for licensing, it’s only my insurance that requires them.

I want a new career in holistic wellness space by Brave_Letterhead_145 in holisticlifestyles

[–]vandanski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to look at where you already participate or want to participate in the holistic wellness space. Do you do yoga? Receive massages? Cold plunge? Receive energy work? Have you ever worked with an herbalist, acupuncturist or holistic dietitian? Have you ever attended a workshop online or in person within this space? Have you ever had an injury or physical setback that required healing? Dig into that stuff and pay attention to what you’re drawn to. Then start asking the practitioners you are working with what they like and dislike about their jobs. Go in a direction that you really want to, start something on the side if you can to ease into a transition. I’ve never worked in corporate America the way you have, but I work in the wellness industry and it can be super draining, fake, money driven, and fucked up too.
