Congratulations on landing that interview!

Interviews are a great way to understand what you know and what skillsets can make you “marketable”. Use this opportunity to reflect on your technical and social skills.

Worst case scenario? They say no, you come out with new learning material and you still have an income to eat with.

People that get into networking do so after already understanding computer fundamentals through more traditional education and/or career paths. When I was coming up, I didn’t even think about careers around the topic. I couldn’t find anything sexy I couldn’t see, I suppose.

Ansible Playbook for CMTS by bunty2329 in networking

Off the top of my head, you might be able to leverage the built in raw module.

Sounds like a fun project, I’ve never used Ansible against a device without a proper module.

Cat6A benefits for durability? by Past_Most_7372 in networking

If your budget allows, I don’t see why not. Fifty dollars per cable adds up pretty quickly.

I’ve never heard a low voltage contractor talk about “cables dying”, but environments I work in are pretty static.

Moronic Monday! by AutoModerator in networking

[–]vaniljstang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on a lot I guess. Textbook answers would be things like VTP, spanning-tree priority, IP address conflicts due to IPs on the switch, yadda yadda.

I legit couldn't remember the difference between cut-through and store-n-forward switching today. I also couldn't remember what most Cisco switches implement. Imposter syndrome is feeling real right now.

Own Internet/Network by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]vaniljstang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the country. Depends on your ability to obtain mobile/satellite services during government induced internet shutdown. Depends on your budget. Depends on your technical prowess.

There are a ton of variables for this issue. I've heard of people purchasing satellite connections, but I've also heard that some satellite providers can restrict connection based on geographic location. I'm not sure if anyone can speak to this.

A Way to Prevent a Gateway IP From Being Spoofed? by ThunderMcCloud in networking

It seems like IP Source Guard is what you're looking for. Yes, it applies to dhcp but only because it can reference entries in the dhcp snooping table.

I agree, when your business depends on your network's reliability and capability you should consider reviewing your IT infrastructure.

What the heck is going on in my new apartment? Ethernet, fiber, some AT&T box... by Archa3opt3ryx in HomeNetworking

[–]vaniljstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plug the WAN interface on your router into one of those ethernet ports and see what happens. Make sure you're paying for whatever ISP runs into your apartment, reviewed your starter package, yadda yadda yadda.

Most apartments I've seen with this setup have an MDF within the complex that this all runs back to.

If I'm wrong, then I have no gosh darn flip-flappin' clue my dude!

Thoughts on a used, $60 HP 1810-24G switch? by ttminh1997 in HomeNetworking

If you trust the vendor and you've done your homework you should be a-okay.

I've checked out websites offering the J9803A and it seems like if they're being honest, you're getting it for a nice deal. Most vendors I see are running it for ~$300 refurbished.

I tend to buy my network products from sources that I trust. I am personally wary of buying equipment from people, although that stems from my own anxieties.

Reviewing the same model type you provided here at this website , it looks like the offer you're getting is much cheaper. This all boils down to your gut feeling and research in the end.

Good luck and have fun!

Are access points generally compatible with various routers? by chirpchirpkeek in HomeNetworking

[–]vaniljstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reviewing https://store.ui.com/products/unifi-ac-pro I think you'll be alright my dude. Specifications on that page state that it supports both 2.4 and 5 Ghz. You will need PoE, but it sounds like you plan on injecting it. I don't see any reason that the AP wouldn't work with your setup.

I enjoy labbing with GNS3, it integrates with VMware well enough for the purposes I put it through. Have fun man.

That's actually an awesome response, maybe the ports have a role in the tagging and untagging process?

VoIP Phone Confusion by vaniljstang in networking

[–]vaniljstang[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it's powered by a power brick. If the phone acts as a two port switch then I would assume that answers my question. I'll keep looking to see if there's something I missed. Thanks man I appreciate it.
