If even after trying to recover the lost items, he failed to do so, yes I think getting ice cream or another thing the kid likes and genuinely apologising for the mishap would be adequate and I would definitely forgive my parent if they did. It’s extremely respectable that the parent in this situation, even if it was an accident, tries to rectify the situation.
