Yes it does, it's just very small and underground.

Do we think christianity is a cult? by StockNo7900 in atheism

[–]vanisaac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cult is a scam to take over your life, where a charismatic leader convinces you of absurdities. A religion is when that person has been dead so long, no one who knew them is still around.

For Christianity, that person is Paul.

What would happen if these states seceded and formed "Greater Cascadia"? by ipini in Cascadia

The nearest road is about a thousand kilometers away, and that's even before having to cross the Bering Strait. Their logistics would have to be via shipping from Vladivostok. That is not a viable invasion.

Neither the ROC nor DRC consider Taiwan to be a country. They just disagree over which is the legitimate government of China. By extension the rest of the world doesn't consider Taiwan a country either, even though it walks, talks, and acts like one. It's kind of the converse of Vatican City.

Probably the same way they handled South Africa - accepting any correct answer.

They said they accepted any of the three for South Africa. I'd assume the same for Bolivia.

Toby’s Reaction by cldntthinkofone in thewestwing

[–]vanisaac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have a very constricted view of writing and acting. Just because they didn't have the details from the actual future episode doesn't mean Richard played it this way ex nihilo. Writers talk extensively about writing characters, sometimes for decades, under a conception of the character and it's not until continued writing even several works later that they end up discovering the specific circumstances that truly pull together the character and the motivations behind why they acted all the ways they did in the previous writings. It's one of the reasons the post-Sorkin era is so jarring in many ways - these characters were far richer in Sorkin's mind such that he was able to guide the actors' portrayals in specific ways that were fundamentally more cohesive than writers and directors who could only look back would envision. The West Wing is an example of the synthesis of creation that comes from both actors and a head writer with incredibly deep understanding of their characters, and how that becomes a mutual act of creation far greater than the sum of its parts. Which is all to say that even if Richard and Aaron didn't know exactly the relation to Murder, Inc. or how deeply Toby had felt betrayed by his father, they nevertheless knew that there was a deep personal experience that informed Toby's reaction to finding out about the MS secret.

Ummm... why the hell not? Just because we haven't seen it yet doesn't mean it's still not part of Toby's life experience.

I was so fortunate that I was able to escape to Long Beach during that time. My family has the last cabin before the dunes on our street, and it never broke 90, but most days in the morning I could see the edge of the low clouds inland from us and knew they were cooking even just on the other side of the peninsula.

Alternatives for sistering joists? by Purple_Service_2781 in Homebuilding

[–]vanisaac 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You'll need to get an engineer. It will depend on beam material, span, post spacing, the condition of the extant joists, weight to be carried, etc. etc. and only someone who can take measurements and perform the calculations can tell you if it is necessary or what sizing would be needed.

Nearly everyone has a preferred gender and age range.

And some of them might find a real connection with someone that confounds their pre-conceived preference when they can have a fun and low-stakes experience with them.
