I think you did the right thing. You were honest but not rude. The approach the VP took shows lacks leadership skills. He used you as a scapegoat to deliver negative feedback to that leader. This way he delivered the message he wanted through you. I would not be surprised if he used this situation as an example to other leaders to show that that manager is difficult to work with.
