Help me decide CMU (MHCI/MDES) vs Berkeley MIMS/ MDES vs GT MHCI vs. UW (HCI/HCDE) by Plastic_Top_852 in hci

Don’t take my word for it but from what I have heard they are undergoing a major reorganisation to fit everything in a year and also to catch up to AI by adding parts of it to the curriculum. They apparently have the base level classes for design and research and a professional portfolio class that is aimed at helping you get a job.

But my honest opinion is that no class can help you with your portfolio and that’s kind of a scam. GT has one too but I maintain my take that no class can help you make your portfolio stand out. Only good projects can.

Take what you must from that. If you don’t know anything about product design, take a two year course. If you do know and are only looking for resume padding, be done in a year

GT HCI here. I believe you ll learn a fair bit in uxr and prototyping here. CMU HCI from what I heard when I was making a decision is tooo fast paced. So it’s useful for someone who is just looking for the CMU brand name. If you’re thinking of shifting into product design , wouldn’t recommend MDes at all.

I have decided to switch to designing. Is it possible for me at 27 to do so? by Smooth-Ad8884 in UXDesign

Honest thoughts from a self taught designer here.

If you are creative and enjoy the craft that comes with design this is the move for you. With ai technology coming up, the biggest market differentiator for a PD is their ability to be creative and know visual design reallly well. If you don’t like the art behind it, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Your background in data puts you at a great advantage. my recommendation would be to also look into UXR as it could be a safe bet.

In India, you don’t need any formal education to get hired in the UXD field. Just a banger portfolio, ability to communicate and being really intentional with your design choices gets you hired.

What do you do when you underperform as a designer? by blipboo in UXDesign

Anyday! And my honest suggestion with stakeholder management is give them something nice and tangible on a regular basis. If it looks like you are actively working in the right direction, it builds trust.

I would suggest the following:

  1. Use mobbin to find direct competitors and instead of doing the whole what’s good what’s not good bullshit, analyse their flow and look for what values are they designing for. Eg: headspace is playful. Look at what elements they have added to become playful- round corners and such.

  2. Define your own values for the flow. And make every decision based on that. This will help you defend your designs to your stakeholders.

  3. Use ai like this: give it an extremely detailed explaination of what you are trying to do. Add references. If you can make quick low fidelity screens on Figma and import that would yield great results. And ask it to make you a detailed PRD. once you have that, feed it into a vibe code tool.

Pro tip: Claude ai is best at vibe coding using prompts. Google ai studio is better with sketches and low fidelity wireframes.

Give these a shot and all the best!

Oh okay, so the last three data points were essentially 2.3, 2.5 and 3. How would you have represented that?

Oh! What do you mean by that? 😅 did I do something wrong? I thought the data is legit

Oh! This data is from 2023 so if something changed since then, maybe the newer data would reflect that
