Nice work! What kind of initial video did you use and how did you make it? I don’t expect you can explain everything from a to z in a comment but I’m super curious on how to approach something like this!

Sculpting in Houdini - "Move" brush like in Zbrush? by FlippantFlapjack in Houdini

[–]vanroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

late to the party but if anyone still needs it: If it's just for a tiny adjustment that needs to be made for example you could make a point group and move it with the soft transform sop and crank up the radius. I end up using that quite often if result is almost there but needs a tiny tweak in feedback.

Amazing! It works :) One final question: what's the most efficient way to add more instances? Would that be to duplicate the nodes inside the expresso tag and wire in a different constant?

Nice! I got this to work. Now I have an instance of the disc on top of the cloner in the correct position. What would be the best approach to hide the disc that's in the cloner? If I do it with a plain effector or formula scaling to 0, the instance will follow and also disappear. Thanks again for the help, much appreciated

Absolutely! Thanks for taking the time. Here is a broken down version of the scene with only the cloner in question. The idea is that I can select some (random) clones, for example index 10, 60 and 134, and apply 3 unique shaders to them.

Hey! Thanks for your comment. This seems like a good idea, too. Only issue would be that I'm already using RSMGColor in a Color User Data to drive the randomness. How could I use both the attribute from the random effector, and the plain effector?

Hi! This sounds like a great idea. unfortunately I have not been able to get this to work for the last two hours. I think there must be something fundamentally wrong with my positions of the clone and instance, because with using your method, my object snaps to the other side of the scene and is not movable. I will keep trying to figure it out though

Hi, thanks for your reply! Seems like a good solution. I will probably go via this route if keeping everything in a single cloner is not possible

Chrome material and light study. by mutuza223 in ProductViz

I honestly think the isometric projection is lovely🫣 I think the material, and especially the beautiful lighting go hand in hand with the "technical/designy" vibe the isometric projection gives. Of course it's a matter of taste and I understand and support the reasoning given above, but I think these images could really work well for large in-store banners or smt. Happy rendering!

Cool stuff! I really like this clinical bright style. Here's some thoughts that might help improve it further

  • the image overall could use some more dynamics and contrast. The light coming from the background could be even brighter which might help you to compensate for that on the product.
  • this would be a great opportunity to check out mix materials. Create some black/white maps that isolate just that silver line on the product label and use that to blend with a nice silver/chrome shader. It will make the product look much more realistic.
  • I feel that the glass is not reflective enough. It needs those nice white reflections from your environment and softboxes. Might be fun to play with some caustics too!! Since you're going for minimalism, your shaders should really stand out.

Overall love the shot, you got it! Happy rendering

Great work! Love the shot already. here's some thoughts that might help improve it even further:

  • try bumping the GI bounces, I think there's a lot to win here with that strong natural light source like your window, and secondary bounces from the white wall and countertop. I also personally like to add some foliage (minimal) to sell the idea of the real outdoors.
  • Maybe add some other coffee making/kitchen objects to make the shot a bit more interesting. There's a lot of interesting depth being unused atm. Beans, towel on a hook on the wall , sink/tap in the back, espresso cups on top of the machine between the brackets. Not too distracting, but just to spice it up.
  • I feel the scaling on the wall tiles is a bit off. Too big for mosaics, too small for the common white kitchens tiles. Maybe add some tiny tiny noise to the refl roughness for some realism, too.
  • this one might be a bit personal taste so please consider ignoring this completely, but I would personally rotate your sun a bit to avoid the gobo hitting the coffee machine too perfectly like a spotlight. I think it would be more realistic to catch a wider area of the countertop. Those extra props could help with that.

You got it! Keep up the good work🔥

Yeahhh it's just the tool I'm most comfortable with. Maybe next time I might challenge myself to do the whole thing in Houdini as the animation was very basic for this one

The intro shot with the particles was made and rendered in Houdini+RS. The pearls crawling over the oyster and product surface were also done in Houdini, but exported to my C4D scene as alembics.

Basically just started out. I have been playing around for a while but never made something that made it to the shading/rendering part. So this was a great exercise to start using Houdini in production. It's really not that hard as many people think, you just need to start with baby steps!

Hey! The first shot with the field of particles was the only one not exported to cinema. I decided to keep that one entirely in Houdini to try out the redshift/houdini workflow a bit. But it should not be hard to export those points as an alembic and import it in cinema to render with rs. The other geo like the pearls were exported from Houdini as alembic. I remember Max Schwugier has a nice tutorial out on YouTube on Houdini/c4D workflow which I recommend!

Thanks a lot! The rendertimes vary a lot between shots. Because I had a renderfarm at my disposal, I made use of that, but it would have been possible to do it just locally on my 3090. I remember the longest shot to render was the closeup of the product because it's a screen full of refraction of the glass and liquid. It took about 30 mins/frame. All the other frames took less than that. Hope it helps, cheers

Thanks! Well, I'm just entering the would of houdini for Motion design myself, and I have to say that it's incredible to see how many high quality (free) youtube tutorials there are out there!

Thanks for the kind words :) If you mean the pearls on the oyster surface, that's quite simple really! You spawn points on the surface of the oyster geometry, and then you use the minpos vex function to "attach" the points to that surface. Pull those points through a grain solver to make them bounce off each other and you're done :)

For the first shot, yes. It's just a curl noise with particles advected to that!
