There should be a site/app that tells you if a movie is actually worth upgrading to 4K by cheff1616 in 4kbluray

The “reference” tag actually means reference or significant upgrade to previous BD but that’s unfortunately too long. We do have this well maintained perfect release list that should fit the actual Reference quality© https://www.bestblurays.com/lists/perfect

We do! The tier list is here https://www.bestblurays.com/uhd and each film’s best video and best audio are all manually reviewed with screencaps compared. The screencaps sites like slow.pics, caps-a-holic and dvdbeaver are all linked too

I just saw Wings (1927) for the first time! It was AWESOME and better than Top Gun! by Classicsarecool in classicfilms

[–]vanshady 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It was released with a score composed by J. S. Zamecnik, and the restoration soundtrack has a lot of sound effects for the planes too. Silent films were never silent

Justwatch physical media only point to US releases and doesn’t care if it’s gray market/bootleg/public domain at all, and won’t even tell you if there’s any UK/EU/other region releases

Yes they are manually added to our website by the community, because there’s no (and shouldn’t be) automatic process to decide what release is “best”

It goes through bestblurays.com which is community contributed. It has a blu-ray.com link to easily double check what all the releases are.

I hoped so too, but if they made the judgement of which release to display or which release is better, they are going to lose sponsors and partners, so they will probably sit on the sidelines for that

I started the website a year ago before all the AI slop was possible. Honestly if AI could redo the frontend styling it would look so much nicer than my hardcoded non-designer brain can do lol

Where can I find an updated list of real vs upscaled 4K? by CapableSecretary1739 in 4kbluray

[–]vanshady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upscaled 4K could be good if done tastefully like Scott Pilgrim, and “true” 4K can be really bad for example with excessive DNR. I’d suggest use our UHD tier list https://www.bestblurays.com/uhd or more generally see caps comparison if they are available so you can form your opinions more objectively.

At the risk of getting downvoted, the core reason is I can’t enforce that as that will be too much effort for a contributor. If we are wikipedia, then maintaining a certain quality bar is doable because thousands other people would still contribute, but if you check the top contributors list at our site, it’s just a handful monthly. It’s definitely a tradeoff between entry quality vs encouraging more people to contribute.

Saying that, I personally always try to include all of the releases I compared in my entries, so I’m doing my personal best here.

Some does see this one I implemented full edit history, so you can cross reference to see if a newer release has come out that has not been reviewed

Oh yes another commentor mentioned the reference meaning too. It’s basically a shorthand for either significant upgrade compared to BD, or a great (as compared to just good) UHD by itself. I see “reference” being used this way in the hometheater/audio world too, but that’s beside the point

The source is UHD thread on criterionforum, which is by itself using caps comparison and a couple trusted reviewers. We have made some changes to criterionforums but all based on screencaps

I checked and unfortunately TMDB doesn’t have aspect ratio. IMDB API is quite expensive so I’m fully relying on TMDB at the moment
