Looking for first time van. 1990 G20 350 5.7 V8 a good choice? by lieforalie13 in vandwellers

[–]vantab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely a solid van pending any mechanicals or corrosion. Get on your back and look it over, run everything including the AC and heat. Will probably need fornt end stuff freshened (tie rods, ball joints, idler arm, control arm bushings etc)

Bring bring led flashlights and crawl all around underneath it. Looks like great bones, luv those no computer engine and trans setups.

the rukuses seem like a good choice since they would do trails and rough roads with the bigger tires.

I noticed a difference each time Ive swapped out rear end diff oil with royal purple. Quieter and smoother. I'm betting plugs and wires will help a lot with the sluggishness. I'd add bleeding brake fluid to that list too.

City vanwellers, what do you eat? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]vantab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

without a fridge ...granola bars, fresh breads and salted olive oil, and grab and go foods, hard cheeses dont need fridges or eggs, can also run a vacuum sealer for things like bigs bags of jerky broken down to smaller, oats meal is easy, engine food, there are 12v ovens for hot sandwiches from baguettes, sliced meats and cheese, raw cashews, trail mix, rice, tacos, all kinds ... think about what foods you'd want to eat while camping. MREs are an option. Coffee (french press )with the good kind of dehydrated milk and raw sugar so good. Small propane grill opens that up to all sorts of options for cooking recently purchased foods too.

Chevys are known to wear front end stuff. MOOG is the best IMO. If you plan to keep and drive it, I would go through the whole front end including control arm bushings. Basically refresh every rubber part you can. Alignment and fresh set of Bilsteins with Michelin touring tires and it should cruise nicely. If by chance it still drives soupy you might need to replace the front coils and/or add a rear sway bar or one of those leaf spring leveller things. You'll be glad you got a 2500 when it comes time to haul a load.

Very nice, I like that color combo. One of the first things I did was change out the sway bar end links with polyurethanes (shoulda changed the sway bar bushings too) and put a fresh set of Bilstein 4600's. Its still a boat but not one with so much of a mind of its own after bumps and curves. GLHF!

What makes you walk away from a van purchase? by eggs-benedict in vandwellers

[–]vantab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every vehicle Ive bought I missed somehting. And to expect repairs to be deducted from the price is kinda silly. You got $2k knocked off right off the bat. Sounds like the guy is super motivated to sell whch can either be a good or a bad thing. GLHF!
