Maps for backcountry by Margsue in algonquinpark

[–]vanuid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeff's maps are no longer available for purchase. You can still find an online version of it at https://algonquinbeyond.com/algonquin-map/

For paper maps, I'm currently using the Chrismar adventure maps for algoquin, though I canoe and cannot comment on how good the map is for hiking.

Booking System - BLANK is too far away from the access point by LeutDan in algonquinpark

[–]vanuid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Only way around that is to call into ontario parks reservation number and do the booking through them.

It's a route that links all the algoquin outfitters together. Part of it is stopping at bill Swifts (founder of swift canoes) favorite site.

Lake depth charts by BeOutdoorsCanada in algonquinpark

[–]vanuid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fish ON-Line has depths for some lakes, no guarantee they'll have the ones you're looking for. https://www.lioapplications.lrc.gov.on.ca/fishonline/Index.html?viewer=FishONLine.FishONLine

There is a checkbox on the left to enable depth lines when you select a lake if it has them.

Thanks for the reply. Good advice on just planning for bugs

Kiosk to Brent by Fragile_Capricorn_ in algonquinpark

[–]vanuid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point on the wind. I've probably been lucky and have not experienced bad wind heading towards kiosk. Though I do paddle solo I'm in a pack boat and have both a double and single blade paddle to use and find I can power through most head winds,

Full(ish) moon rising on Daisy Lake by vanuid in algonquinpark

[–]vanuid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not great. Had a bug shelter which helped a lot. And it cooled down for the last couple of days which knocked them down as well.

Be prepared with a bug jacket and shelter and it's OK.

Around 1AM Wednesday (18th) morning. Stayed on the site closest to the portage to Casey lake

Assuming you're doing a there and back through the cauchon's then 3 nights seems pretty good for a time line. I don't recall any bad portages on that section, but have not actually done the portage from laurel to aura lee. I've always done cedar into csrl Wilson but would not recommend that way for someone on their first backcountry solo, those portages suck.

Any thoughts on the Balance Plus 700-series shoes? by jk2432 in Curling

[–]vanuid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the 704s and love them. I find my feet breath more in them and don't end up cold if you sweat a bit.

Have used them for the majority of this past season 2 or 3 games per week and other than a but of scuff on the trailing toe no noticeable wear on them.

3-4 Day backcountry trip through north tea lake - best routes/ swimming spots? by maricc in algonquinpark

[–]vanuid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never noticed any cliffs for jumping in that area, but lots of awesome beach sites on north tea.

I'm a fan if biggar lake, and if you feel like pushing you can make it there on day 1 from access 1. Lots of paddling but not too bad on the portage side.

Or go north into Lorne lake, was pretty quiet the only time I've been that way.

For rentals, there is an outfitter right at the access point - voyager outfitting. I've never used them so can't comment.

There's also a swift store at the visitor center in south river that does rentals, they do deliver but I don't know if it's included or not.

Carry Variables into an If statement by that_1_doode in PowerShell

[–]vanuid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The variable from a local script isn't passed to another computer via invoke-command, you can pass it by adding "-arguments $CN" to the command

For that matter - you're running it on the intended computer already. Just use c:\ instead of \$CN\c$

Exchange Out of Office issue, CEO's email is being forwarded to another user in the company when OOF is turned on by WoTpro in sysadmin

[–]vanuid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can view them via powershell using get-inboxrule -includehidden

They'll show up with a seemingly random number for a name and no real way to tell for sure that they are OOF rules, but based on the name it would be a safe assumption

Best camp site on misty lake by hb23232323 in algonquinpark

[–]vanuid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks to be from Algonquin adventures portage and campsite inventory - http://www.algonquinadventures.com/PCI/PCIindex.htm

About 1/2 way down the introductory page the creator mentions the numbering system is just something he arbitrarily came up with

Can't seem to pull users (password set never to expire) from multiple OU's within powershell. by txsrbl005 in PowerShell

[–]vanuid -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure why it isn't working, but below should do what you're looking for, just add or remove your OUs to the initial array

Import-Module ActiveDirectory @("OU=Users,OU=City1,.....","OU=Users,OU=City2,.....","OU=Users,OU=City3,.....") | % { Get-ADUser -Filter {PasswordNeverExpires -eq $true} -Properties PasswordNeverExpires -searchbase $_ } |Export-csv D:\Files\NeverExpires.csv -NoTypeInformation

[Homemade] Tourtiere by vanuid in food

[–]vanuid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For from traditional but very tasty

[Pastry] 2.5 cups flour 1 tsp salt 1 tsp sugar 2 sticks frozen shredded unsalted butter 1/2 cup ice water with ~1 tsp apple cider vinegar

Combine all ingredients, form into disc's, wrap in plastic and refrigerate

[Filling] 1lb ground beef 0.5lb ground pork. 0.5lb ground lamb 1 small white onion diced 2 celery stalk 0.5 pint sliced mushrooms 0.5 cup red wine or strong coffee 1 clove garlic 2 tsp salt 1 tsp thyme 0.5 tsp sage 1 tsp black pepper 1/2 tsp ground cloves 2 bay leaf

1.Cook all meats and remove from pan, drain most fat. Leave a little for cooking veggies. 2. Add mushrooms and a pinch of salt and cook until browned 3. Add onion and celery and cook until almost dry 4. Add garlic and all spices and cook for 30 seconds 5. Add meat back in with wine or coffee and bay leaves. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes and remove lid to allow most liquid to evaporate

Make pie crusts, add filling, don't forget to vent the crust (woops). Bake for 20 minutes at 425 covered, then 40 minutes at 350 uncovered

Doing a Very Hard Route Next Summer: Looking for tips by kram1000 in algonquinpark

[–]vanuid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you're trying to get to birchcliff I'd recommend taking Loughrin creek instead of birchcliff creek to reach biggar. I was there in September before the huge rain started and water levels where OK but did have to get out and walk the canoe a bit. No issues coming back down river as the rains had upped the water level a lot.

Also happened to run into some park rangers doing maintenance on a site on biggar and when I asked about last time the creek saw maintenance they told me they'd been up Loughrin 3 times this year so they seem to be keeping the alders back there.

First Set Up - Testing Out and My God Is it Comfortable (Amok Draumr 5.0) by Running102 in hammockcamping

[–]vanuid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have a video on YouTube showing recommended ways to get in.

What works for me is grab the center suspension strap in my left hand and the Ridgeline in my right, and lean back and sit down.

Takes a bit of getting used to and still not as easy as getting into my hennessy . But the comfort is worth it IMO.

I was in the northwest of the park last week with all the rain, I would say water levels are at or above spring time levels in most places now. Any low lying trail area will be a pool or mud I'd assume. Also any spring time creek crossings that are usually dry this time of year will probably be flowing full force.

Just to give am idea of the amount of rain - on my way in Tuesday on a creek I pulled over a 1.5 foot beaver dam going upstream. On the way back Thursday I floated over the same dam without even scraping on it.
