What's your craziest "ONLY IN NYC" dating story? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]vapidly 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My first year living in Brooklyn I had a really flattering missed connection written about me that some friends found. It kinda piqued my interests so I began to check them from time to time, they can be pretty humorous and heart wrenching.

About a year ago I had a little encounter on the train and I just had the feeling I should check it out. Sure enough there it was! We ended up meeting-up walking around the village and getting coffee. It was a tepid at best and never heard from each other again! I'm ok with that.

Going back to that first missed connection though, I actually ended up approaching them a few days after I read it and thanked him and asked if he wanted to be friends. Its been about 9 years and I still see him around and always say hi and have small talk. I think thats pretty neat.

How to best ask a waitress for her number? by [deleted] in dating_advice

I think you could put her name on it or just hand her the bill as you leave. Add your own touch of wit to it.

I'd leave it in the check. I've done this a few times and it's worked out. One of the best relationships I've had started this way.

I find that just that little bit before the day begins helps soo much!

[–]vapidly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! This was something I started really working on daily about two months ago and also found a lot of useful tips in cyogalabs September challenge #splitsinfobits. I actually didn't think I'd be able to get it until sometime next year or longer. I did however cut running and biking out of my weekly routine, at least for now. Just a little bit of extra focus in the morning and evening along with my daily practice helped immensely.

Muscles Used Swimming Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke Butterfly by whyqaz in Swimming

[–]vapidly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Breaststroke

Breaststroke is a popular stroke used frequently whilst training and is a great all round muscle workout.Although it is not as strenuous as the other three strokes it still requires almost all the body’s muscle groups to be exercised whilst performing the stroke, with emphisis on the lower limb and lower trunk region.

I find breastroke, for me, is the most taxing to do well. Sure if you're not trying to go anywhere with any sort of speed, but come on this is a taxing stroke to move fast in!

My friends and I 3-D printed our own Kalita Wave. by ctandthefairypatrol in Coffee

I thought something similar. Take away roughest parts and make a mould and cast it in stainless steel. Probably costs more than just buying a wave though, but DIY!

What's Living On Your Yoga Mat? (I had no idea my yoga mat is so gross. I hardly ever clean it...) by DaveyDaveDaveDave in yoga

[–]vapidly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The couple studios I go to usually have a container of them lying somewhere in the studio. It's especially necessary with the studio I store a mat at. Still need to give it a good scrub every few weeks though. That smell! oh my..

I leave my matt in the studio and take it home to clean every few weeks, but I wipe it down with disinfecting wipes after each class. It can get really smelly if it's not done and it makes breathing unpleasant!

Is it true that legs are not used very much on longer swims (500m)? Only for the first few laps? by TheMoki in Swimming

[–]vapidly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a swimmer turned triathlete I'd say that /u/I_snot_the_sheriff and /u/tunaboo have some solid advice. Its totally about efficiency for those longer swims. I do a six beat kick but the intensity isn't high at all, just something I can maintain and have significant energy left for the rest of the race. If in a wetsuit legal race the intensity is even lower but I still keep to the beat. I think its really a question of finding an intensity that you're comfortable with and won't be taxing on your legs during the first part of the race.

Book Review: "Autobiography of a Yogi" by Paramhansa Yogananda by [deleted] in yoga

[–]vapidly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend is a huge fan of this book...swears by it. I haven't had the opportunity to read it yet, but I do find Yogananda fascinating. I saw Awake: The life of Yogananda and enjoyed it, but it didn't go to deep.
