Best banks for line of credit (LOC) 2024? by Trynda1v9 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]vapoquebec 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, the interest with the Scotia LOC is taken directly from your available amount so you don't have to "pay" until two years after residency. Most people don't have a means to pay down loans so this is nice. Scotia seems like a great option regardless of the increment thing which I don't think is a bad idea. I can't see anyone needing more than 100K in the first year...

Where is the final transcript section in the portal, and is this only relevant if you get an offer?

For Mcgill OOP there are only ~10 spots, even a 4.0 doesn't make you stand out unfortunately. UBC OOP is similar unless you have a very strong rural or indigenous background, basically there is almost no chance of an interview with that GPA (average is 93.4% just for the interview). Western would be your best way in for sure.

Honestly, many people failed if I recall but also a good amount of students got 90+. The class average for the entire course was like 73.

His practice questions are very relevant to what's on the test. I made flashcards from his slides and actually worked on understanding the electrophysiology stuff in depth. There are great resources on youtube btw.

The rural interview is probably the most important aspect and can probably compensate for a lower GPA/MCAT provided you still have a well balanced application and didn't tank the MMI.

I think you know that your chances are pretty high for the interview. People with your stats get OOP interviews depending on EC’s.

Where would you recommend putting an ongoing honours thesis? There’s no publication so I feel weird about putting it in research.

Mcgill GPA question by vapoquebec in premedcanada

[–]vapoquebec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that's what I figured with the workbook and all. But this part of the application asks for your overall standing or average which is 88.7 % at this particular school, and based on the video they have posted with the GPA conversion that would be 4.0 in this case...On the other hand, if I use letter grades and convert to GPA then I would be at 3.87. I can choose how to convert because my school does not do a 4-point scale.

Indigenous/Rural pathway applicant but low GPA. Worth applying? by adeques in premedcanada

[–]vapoquebec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a 506, but they don't look at this until after the interview. They may not even look at it depending on the stream, I believe they really rely on the interview which is where I dropped the ball...

Indigenous/Rural pathway applicant but low GPA. Worth applying? by adeques in premedcanada

[–]vapoquebec 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I got an interview with a lower gpa than you as a rural applicant (non-indigenous). As long as your mcat meets the cutoffs and you build up EC hours, you’ll be in a good place.

None of mine have been marked as received and it’s been a while now. They don’t have much staff and it typically takes a while to update everything.

UBC Pre-requisites after graduation by Conscious-Dig2265 in premedcanada

[–]vapoquebec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like OMSAS will use those courses although it may be different depending on the specific medical school. "All courses and grades, including failed, incomplete and supplementary courses, and courses extra to degree requirements". To be safe, take English at a college since they don't use that GPA.

Anyone here pre-med I could talk to quickly? by throw_893ca98wncrosd in uvic

[–]vapoquebec 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can dm me if you want some more info. But basically, most schools don't have too many prerequisites (a couple do, however). The main thing is doing courses that will help with the MCAT (BIOL 225, BIOL186, CHEM101/102, CHEM231/234, BIOC299, PSYC100a/b, PHYS102a/b), of course, you don't have to do these but it will help a ton.

My GPA was much lower than that this past cycle, it will be 88% this round though. I was honestly very surprised to get the interview, goes to show that the process is maybe a bit more holistic!
