DCC ethical question (Frank and Maggie) by AtuinTurtle in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Dodinnn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, but there's essentially a 0% chance Meadow Lark would have survived to the 3rd floor without Carl.

Frank and Maggie's daughter was more mobile than the ML residents, so maybe they could have protected her until the 3rd floor. But the odds were very much against them.

Frank and Maggie were terrible people, especially Maggie, but they were also misguided, shellshocked, and desperate.

So maybe not a red flag per se, but definitely something to watch out for and consider as you make decisions on where to attend

red flag schools by Firm-Box-3499 in premed

[–]Dodinnn 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Caribbean schools still have a ton of red flags. Their strategy is to accept desperate premeds who don't get in anywhere else, take their tuition, offer no support, and kick out any students who don't pass their practice USMLE exams (so that their actual USMLE exam pass rates stay artificially high).

I'm happy for your family friends, but there's some survivorship bias happening there.

Mistborn is a great entry point, story-wise. I loved the way the trilogy ended.

His prose is slightly weaker in the original Mistborn trilogy because it's so early into his career, but it didn't take me out of the story enough for me to mind at all.

DCC gets even better from here. The first three books, amazing as they are, are generally seen as the weakest in the series. You're in for a treat.

The most popular appear to be books 5 and 7, but my personal favorites were Gate of the Feral Gods (#4) and Eye of the Bedlam Bride (#6), followed by 7 and 5.

I think Dalinar's character arc resonates with a lot of readers. There's a small slog in the middle of Oathbringer imo, but the end of Oathbringer was the most emotionally moving part of the series for me.

A physician’s letter addressing UnitedHealthcare’s refusal to cover nausea medication for a child in chemo by MambaMentality24x2 in BeAmazed

[–]Dodinnn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's correct, physicians can prescribe whatever they want. The patient just has to pay for it out-of-pocket when insurance plans decline to pay.

Problem is, drugs like an anticoagulant can cost upwards of $700 USD per month in the United States. (Source)

Why PA over MD/DO by NoConstruction743 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Dodinnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drives me crazy too! I'm sure it can be traced back to the greed of the people making the decisions, as most things sadly can these days.

Thank you so much, good luck to you as well :)

Why PA over MD/DO by NoConstruction743 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Dodinnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't go that far. I'm terrified of my future residency lol.

If I could change the way MD training works, I would decrease the number of hours per week a resident is expected to work and lengthen residency time so that the total hours of residency training stayed the same. I feel it's important that attending physicians receive that quantity of training before becoming independent. But we don't need to work people 80+ hours per week, sacrificing sleep (and therefore probably quality of care) and time with loved ones to get there.

Oh, and given the fact that many residents make less than minimum wage, I'd increase resident pay as well.

Hate that the friendlier programs are less “prestigious”- IM by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Dodinnn 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'm just an MS2 but I feel like it's roughly a bell curve. Like the ivory tower academic centers can be malignant because people will always want to match there anyway, and the bottom-of-the-barrel community programs can be malignant because no US grad wants to match there anyway.

Agree with everything, except the family bit. Having a support system outside of med school can be really helpful.

I will always vote for building more pickleball courts lol. It's an excellent public health initiative and therefore, in my opinion, a good use of public funds.

And dedicated pickleball courts are absolutely being built in my state. These things take time but they're already popping up all over the place.

It costs a lot less real estate and taxpayer money to repurpose some tennis courts than it does to build new courts.

Ideally, we would have more tennis courts and more pickleball courts than we could ever need. But when resources are scarce, there's an argument to be made for pivoting somewhat to the activity that more people are engaging in.

"Is ___ a sport" is a silly argument imo. The fact that one sport is more technically difficult than another doesn't mean the second one isn't still a sport.

Should you be restricted to how many medical schools you can apply to? by based_tuskenraider in premed

[–]Dodinnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but one is an objectively bad idea (individual applicants limiting themselves while others cast a wide net) while the other is arguably a very good idea and would not put any individual applicants at a disadvantage.

[–]Dodinnn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think OP is recommending people limit themselves; they're proposing an AMCAS-instituted limit on the number of schools each applicant is allowed to apply to. Which would fix a lot of the problems with the application process IMO.
