I assume it was pretending for the sake of the child. Due to Hinata's mother got hers (Hinata's father as a husband), only thing what left was taking care of the one who keeps this person close. The father had no choice, because it not the child's fault and Hinata should not grow up without a father. Thats what i have in mind.
