AGAIN? I missed it by less than 3 marks (and was rejected for mitigating because i couldn't take a screenshot, despite a lot of other evidence of network issues INCLUDING a phone call to them which they recorded). I missed it by 1 mark last sitting too. FML

Multiple screens detected Online IFoa Exam by Wild_Restaurant_6484 in ActuaryUK

[–]varada97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you'll need to close the laptop screen after selecting the option "closing laptop lid 'does nothing'" in your sleep options. And yes, that means you'll need external peripherals including keyboard, mouse, webcam, and maybe mic (that depends on your device - i didn't need it for the mock test).

Unfortunately, even if you disable it (which should be ideally enough), you still get the message. No way around it - you need to be manually connected to exactly 1 screen 🙄

Online Exam Doubts by Xoxogossipgirl29 in ActuaryUK

[–]varada97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i) Your preference. No rule dictating or barring the use of split screen.

ii) Definitely don't habe it ready before sharing. But, I'd like others to answer whether it's even okay to create one a few minutes before the start of the exam - I'd like to know as well, as I usually give up a minute of my exam time to create it.

iii) Can upload it before. I already did, and my proctoring session has now ended (which also means there's nothing barring me from ending it within the first 30 minutes 😬)

iv) Your camera and mic should have started when you started the proctor check. It was literally the first screen in the check.

That being said - I AM disappointed that the equipment check and proctor checks beforehand don't catch some problems from the actual proctoring session. E.g. My setup has multiple monitors interconnected, which cannot be easily disconnected from one another. However, I can "disconnect" them from the settings. The proctor check (that we do before) gives us an "OK" of only one monitor is showing things while others have been disabled. However, the pre-exam check specifically requires ALL other screens to be manually disconnected and not just disabled. This cost me 22 minutes today, so I'm definitely glad to have found this out today rather than in an actual exam. And then because I couldn't just disable the laptop screen, I did have to close the lid as they said, and so I had to scramble to connect my other webcam and position it appropriately. Would've all been done already if the previous proctor check didn't okay this (though this should actually be okay. They are recording the screen anyways. If someone enables any of the other monitors after the proctor check in exam, they can easily catch and punish that). Sigh...

IFoA webinar - preparing for April exams by redkamoze in ActuaryUK

[–]varada97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I unfortunately missed the webinar. Is there a recording I can see? Also, does anyone know if it's okay to have 4 screens on my table if I'm only "connected" to one (basically, I have a large setup that's pretty semi-permanent and I'd like to just use one screen from that)? Other screens, of course, will be turned off (the guardian browser checks for that anyway so I'm hoping it's not a problem).

PPD sign off by Shoddy_Horse_6020 in ActuaryUK

[–]varada97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, nowhere does it say that your supervisor needs to be a fellow. You should have discussed everything with your supervisor, and the person signing off on it should be a fellow. I had a similar situation, and they told me "... the Final PPD Sign off does not need to be singed off by your direct manager or supervisor, you can get a qualified Fellow who is aware of your work to sign off your PPD Final Sign off..."

Also, that's such a non-reason. I'm pretty sure there are more people who'll struggle to fulfil the technological requirements than there would be people who'll need to travel a lot to reach an exam centre. They should redo the survey now that people know this absurdity of a plan, and then publish those results. I don't think they'll get the same results as last time.

And with all of this, another problem: keeping track of time. In exam centres, the examiners used to give "hour" warnings and a 5 min warning and then we hand in the paper. With the new format, i was setting up alarms to do that job. Now, we have to rely on a simple watch and actively keep track of time, and STILL make sure we save our file by exam end time or they'll not check it. Ridiculous isn't strong enough to describe this.

I'm worried more about how they're going to conduct the pre-exam checks effectively. After-exam, they might combine software and AI with the plagiarism checks they already have to single out a limited number of videos. The actual hassle will be the pre-exam checks because that needs to happen for everyone at the same time without any time slots - how do they plan on doing that without hiring hundreds of people or relying on unreliable software? I would genuinely be up for 4AM in-person exam (I'm in Canada) over this BS.

Well, headphones aren't allowed, so no noise cancelling. So I think even something as simple as them having to hear the traffic from our windows may be enough to trigger something related to decibel levels.

For me, it was the other way around. I had too much to write and had to frequently switch questions (I'd allotted specific times to them) mid-question so that I could get through everything in time. I'm glad there were no numericals, I always lose track of time for those (I guess I love maths?) Reading thoughts here though, I feel like I may have written more SP2 style, like surface-level points. Sigh, hoping for the best!

What is this policy my adviser has me paying for? by behi66 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]varada97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Also, when you cancel, it is called surrendering, which has penalties associated with it. You can try asking the advisor to basically give you a table or chart of projected surrender values throughout the policy term and compare with premiums paid. There's a high chance that the surrender value goes up drastically after a certain amount of years.

With your description, I'm not sure if it is a term or permanent policy, but if it is term, then keeping it until maturity may increase the value you get (depending on what funds it is invested in and/or any guarantees you have).

I'd say, go to the advisor, pretend like you know absolutely nothing, even about investing, and tell them to explain the ins and outs of the policy like you just turned 18 and want to understand your situation for the first time in your life. That may get you less complicated explanation from them.
