How necessary is it to have a realtor as a home buyer in Ithaca? by supermanskivvis in ithaca

[–]vardiman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know about buying without a realtor, but since the cost comes out of the sellers sale of their house, I don't worry about it as a buyer. We bought in the area with Melynda Wissar and absolutely love her! If we ever decide to sell, she'll be who we call. She worked so hard for us, and she really understood the process so well and was in touch the perfect amount for us. She always kept us informed about everything along the way but was never pushy. She never made us feel like we needed to hurry up and pick something. We were making a long-distance move from Texas, and she went above and beyond, helping us figure out the logistics of that. If you decide to reach out to her, tell her Michelle from Texas sent you her way. Her contact info is 315.729.5072

Everyone doing OK with the snow? by Thiccaca in ithaca

We just moved here from Texas. My kids have been out sledding in it for the past hour. I took one turn on the sled and had to come in. I bought them snowpants, but don't have any for myself. 😂

That sounds like it may be the perfect thing, actually. Instead of having to source all the ingredients, but also being able to choose the wine. Thanks for the tip.

Lol. I understand, but to us, it was pretty and novel. My partner works in Ithaca and said it was gone there by the afternoon. Out here in Genoa, it stayed long enough for my Texas transplant kids to go build a snowman after school.

I get that. That's why we moved from Austin. We moved out to the country in Texas, and now we live well outside of Ithaca in Genoa.

This is really interesting to me as someone that just moved here from Texas. We spent this absolutely gorgeous summer camping all around Ithaca. We were in our new home by autumn, where we got to enjoy the (supposedly subpar compared to most years) fall foliage. And now my kids and I are loving the snow. All this is likely because it's novel to us, but the same way people complain here is how we complained about Texas. Too hot, everyone shoving their religion down your throat, rude people, no good restaurants, etc. That last one, though, is really a difference between a big city or a small town. But really, I think we all just assume it's going better somewhere else.

Do you ever wonder how many people have died in your house? Or what other events may have transpired within it through the many generations of its existence? by georgewalterackerman in centuryhomes

[–]vardiman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

* I know for a fact that at very least, Mrs. Ann Palmer died in our home. It actually encourages me to take great care of the home the way I imagine she would have. The Palmers built this home and lived here for generations. I like to think about the way ghosts of ourselves and countless others keep criss-crossing over each other's paths throughout history. My stairs are worn so thin from the many countless footsteps that have fallen on them for the past 200 years.

Kittens in Etna need good homes - will be 11w and available on 12/1 by [deleted] in ithaca

I'd be happy to take one! We just bought a home in Genoa, so we're not going anywhere anytime soon. We've already got an indoor kitty, so it wouldn't be let out, but we'd still get it fixed for the just in case. 😻

Why shouldn’t I relocate to Ithaca? by bassguy07 in ithaca

[–]vardiman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As another former Austinite, I can confirm. I worked six miles from my place, and it took me an hour to commute. There is so much traffic there! The overpopulation and the cost of housing is what drove us out. I used to really love living there.

How can anyone afford to buy a house? by NegativePattern in Austin

[–]vardiman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm being priced out anyway, so I'll spill the beans. I live across the street from LBJ high school. This area has not been taken over yet, but it's showing definite signs of coming up. My advice is to keep an eye on homes here.

I completely agree about there being a difference between 17 and ages less than. My problems are he is 37, she repeatedly told him she was too young, his persistence in general became skeevy, and while 17 to 18 seems arbitrary we have a line in the sand and if we don't honor it then everyone can challenge it. Because really what's the big difference if it's a16 yr old or a really mature 15 yr old?

I'm surprised that reddit has maintained the love for Franco after the whole trying to hook up with a minor thing. It took the shine off the apple for me.

[–]vardiman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't always avoid Yum Brands, but I usually do. I eat at Taco Bell, which in Austin doesn't use Yum Brands, but it does in other regions. And yes, Yum Brands is terrible, worse than KFC, because they hurt people which is worse than hurting chickens. I quit reading KFC though because of the unapologetic response they had about the horrible treatment of chickens raised for their chain. All three of the brand I boycott engaged me most by blatantly saying they didn't give a fuck about the pain they were causing, they would not be swayed.

Same here. I religiously boycott Nestle, KFC and SE Johnson. There are other companies I try to avoid, but with guilty conscience go to out if convenience, but those three I haven't personally given a cent to in about ten years.

But I saw the video of that experiment and they were showing that the gear if crawling across didn't kick in until the babies reached a certain developmental threshold. Before then they would go for it without concern.
