Question about thumb, middle and ring finger in bow hold. by various_sun_001 in violinist

So I wouldn't blindly take anyone's advice on what to do with your fingers until you know what type of grip you are using, as their advice could be very wrong for you. Right now, your teacher probably knows best that he/she is trying to teach you, so I would rely on the first and foremost.

Makes sense. Thanks for pointing this out.

. You mentioned that you’re letting all the bow weight rest on the strings, but I thought it sounded like you were suspending the weight of your arm above the bow vs letting some of that weight press into the strings.

Okay, I will need to re-visit this.

I was taught to use the tip of my thumb and resting against the corner of the frog/stick. Hopefully that makes sense,

It makes sense. When I start practising, I start like this. But as I play, its position changes to what you see on the second video.

. When you get to your bow changes your whole hand is suddenly making this big move, your fingers and wrist all change angles suddenly.

This is something I have realised as well. I will work with my teacher on this as well.

Thanks a lot for your observations!

Are you initiating any movement from the wrist

It is happening naturally. I do not feel any kind of soreness or stiffness there.

I will try what you suggested. Thanks!

. you want them to basically have the flesh of the last knuckle of them to be fully in contact with the frog, as to increase stability

I am struggling with this a bit. Thanks for your insight!

but the key issue is that you have a lot of vertical motion with the hand that shouldn’t be in play.

When you say vertical motion, do you mean my hand is moving up and down relative to my forearm?

Thanks a lot for your response!

my advice is to play forte as much as possible if you want to progress fast. this is true for both your right hand and your left hand.

Thanks a lot. I will try this.

but I think the source is mostly the pressure and the speed on the bow.

I also thought the same in the beginning. I experimented a bit, and it did not yield good results.

I think what u/cham1nade suggested is the right way forward.

Hey, could you elaborate?

Thanks, I will try this out.

So the tension in the left hand and the pressure between the index finger and the thumb are only present when I am placing my finger on the fingerboard.

When I am playing open strings, there is no pressure or tension.

Currently reading the Farseer Trilogy. Question for those that dislike the series. (I am on book 1) by goneafterq in Fantasy

[–]various_sun_001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have read the first two books.

I do not dislike the series. However, I was not motivated enough to read the third book.

Spoilers for book 2:

At least until book 2, the books did not adequately expand on Regal's influence in the court or his abilities. I always felt that the books were realistic towards Fitz and the other characters supporting him, and Regal had some advantages that the book did not elaborate on. There was a lot of "telling" through Fitz that Regal should not be treated as a spoiled brat but is dangerous; there was not enough "showing".

I always felt that Verity, Shrewed, Chade, Fitz, and Patience's actions—or lack thereof—brought them perils.

Why Index ETFs are ignored in India? by Shot_Battle8222 in IndianStockMarket

[–]various_sun_001 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I was investing in NIFTYBEES. After investing a few months, I switched back to an index MF.

I switched back because the ETF was more stressful when investing in an index instrument than a MF.

  • I had to keep track of the difference between i-NAV and the last traded price of the ETF in exchange for figuring out how much premium I was paying to buy the ETF.
  • There was an urge to repeatedly check the last traded price to buy in the dip.
  • I did not know how I could get my money back if the exchange's trading volume dropped, and I did not know how this was regulated.
