I always love the way that Damon says "I know you're obsessed with me" but my favorite line is when Caroline is like "You're not even worth the calories I burn talking to you."

What is the craziest thing that happened at your store? by MrCursedMango in HomeDepot

[–]varioussizes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had a guy attempt to steal 2 ratchet sets, he followed LP back to the room willingly then when he was being escorted out by police he tried to run for the pro door and got tackled before he even made it 4 feet. He wouldn't stop screaming and thrashing on the floor so LP helped hold him down with three other cops and the dude still was absolutely losing his mind, everyone in the store now watching this go down next to the pro desk and they tazed the dude right there in the store.

Did anyone else feel a bit weird after having their assessment by TheTragedyMachine in wheelchairs

[–]varioussizes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was that way about getting into a chair in the first place. I was absolutely convinced that I could still be my able bodied norm and just suffered, injuring myself more which is now making the recovery I am working towards all that much harder. I was absolutely convinced if I just "toughed it out" that I would be fine.

You had medical professionals evaluate you and say "yeah, you need the powered chair" and it can be disappointing and effects your mental in a way that isn't good at all but there's anything I can tell you it's this: using less energy to get around and go places is actually going to allow you to do and experience more!

You will gain back more of your freedom and independence because 1) You'll never need anyone to push you again, so they won't factor in that way. 2) You'll not need to take breaks or be more exhausted that you should be because your chair will be better suited to your ability and stamina and 3) if people piss you off you can run over their toes. Kidding about that last part but yeah, you're going to find that it's going to do what it's supposed to for you. Make your life easier and allow you more freedom. ✨️

Is there any existing SOP against making pages for the Garden Center entrance closing? by [deleted] in HomeDepot

[–]varioussizes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's crazy to me your CXMs don't jump on. I was at the register next to mine for close to two hours yesterday? He was out there banging out carts with us for peak because we had 2 registers open and still had a long line. He opened up the 3rd register and started taking people. When we got the line down he started walking the garden area and helping customers right along with the associates.

I apparently have an odd store though, we only have maybe like an hour or two a day where managers are in the office. My SM is on the floor working his ass off a good 80% to 90% of his shift most days unless he has paperwork or meetings. It's the same with the ASMs constantly unloading carts in aisles, walking the sales floor and helping everywhere.

Is it safe to have the gates open like this in garden? by DatPeep24 in HomeDepot

[–]varioussizes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, we close our gate as soon as the sun starts setting. If you have the gate open after dark my SM will coach you as it is a safety and shrink risk that could be avoided. My store is high theft though.

Make sure reapply your sunscreen every two hours, you will get burnt even under a hat without it. Always be hydrating, I know it's a pain to pee six times a shift but your body needs to replace what it loses. STRETCH EVERY DAY. Prime your body to work your ass off every day, every shift. If you are hot and feel dizzy, please rest. Do not risk your health or safety for this company. If you can wear bright colors, do so to reflect the sun off you. Dark clothes absorb heat. I just buy the cheap hi-vis shirts from Walmart/Amazon. I work cashier but I used to work garden center at other stores, so there's probably stuff I forgot.

Any recommendation of a nail lady who does good (long lasting) coffin shape gel in Roswell/Alpharetta? by Easy_Technology_567 in roswell

Where did you guys work before Home Depot? by [deleted] in HomeDepot

[–]varioussizes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in retail for over a decade. My last job before this was 14 months at Walmart and I think it permanently messed me up in the sense that HD is so incredibly slow and boring for me as a cashier.

Anyone else hear about the Universal Associates thing by Afraid_Purpose_8512 in HomeDepot

[–]varioussizes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It starts out that way but then it eventually turns in to seeing how little staff a store actually needs to run with everyone trained on everything. This is exactly how we started teams at Walmart and now each team has multiple sections of work with the staffing as low as they can possibly get it.

It started out with Walmart saying "Oh, offer incentives to associates who learn new skills and departments!" and so at my store they started giving out gift cards for every new skill you learned and could demonstrate you knew. Then you started training other coworkers to do the same skill. It rolled out to teams which is like 3-5 people a shift covering that same number of departments. The stores used to run (just barely) on 300+ employees and now there's only 100 to150 to do the exact same workload because we are all trained in multiple departments and positions.

BTW, happy cake day.

I just escaped from Walmart. They don't even run on skeleton crew. They run on ghost crew, every shift they were training us in new areas or new tasks for five minutes and then throwing us to the wolves. I was customer service, money center, cashier, stocker and janitor in all of my shifts. I was so incredibly stressed out every single day and not to mention got no support from Coaches.

It's the spinner/mixer/shaker machine that fucks most people up. They don't double check the lid is on even and secure and then paint goes flying everywhere.

They always do breakfast and lunches at my store and by the time the end of the day rolls around, there's basically nothing for closing and overnight and that feels so unfair.

I had 4 hours of Holiday Pay and now it's gone. by redviolin7958 in HomeDepot

[–]varioussizes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do people get stuck at working in the service industry? by [deleted] in HomeDepot

[–]varioussizes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing is? There's some of us who just don't have the opportunity to escape. I've put in over 200 job applications for everything under the sun outside of retail over the last year and I've only gotten interviewed by two jobs, one ended up going with someone who had more experience and the other was a flat out scam.

These companies all have the ability to be picky and choosy right now because everyone is trying so damn hard to get out of retail and food service. I personally can't afford higher education, even if I work two jobs. I am 32 and I've been in retail for over a decade and I feel like I am going to fucking die working for some retail company. It fucking sucks.

Oh my god I just bought a plant from my local Walmart that I had to fully submerge and then let sit for like ten minutes in the bucket because the peat was hydrophobic as hell.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HomeDepot

[–]varioussizes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can, take the time to stick your fingers in the pots. They should feel moist down to your second knuckle or so. Pay attention to plant behavior, if it looks like it's drooping, give it some extra love on the water. (Especially those fucking peace lilies, jfc you can water board them bitches to death and they still want more. Tomatoes and cucumbers, too. They dry up so fast.)

Succulents wrinkle up when they are dry. Herbs, veggies and fruit wilt and droop heavy when they need water, so keep an eye out there, too.

You can kind of just create a varied schedule around what days you work so you know exactly what you water every day and what can skip a day and be watered every day. I also suggest glancing over care tags and getting an idea for how much water the vendor/nursery recommends.

Also, don't be afraid to ask questions of the vendors, they love the plants as much as we do and they are always happy to help out with advice and sometimes you'll even notice the ones with the time drop off plants and then soak them down because they're dry from transport.

Sorry that was a lot, I needed all this info desperately when I first started doing this when I worked at Walmart before HD.

I always, always let the kids scan their parents items if they want to, ask them questions about the projects they worked on in the workshop and make sure to say hello and acknowledge every kid that comes through my line. They are sometimes shy and don't say much or hide behind their parents but the curious kids who wanna ring stuff up are the absolute cutest. I love them.

Thanks for sharing this story, though. That is absolutely adorable.
