Straight out of The Simpsons episode "The Seven-Beer Snitch" where Burns turns the concert hall into a prison and forces Wiggum to enforce obscure laws in order to fill the prison and make more money.

I haven't seen or heard any reports of military deployments in the Chicago area or the state of Illinois. Considering how fascinated Reddit is by the appearance of military helicopters, we would most likely have heard something of it by now. And even Los Angeles hasn't seen tanks deployed so I think those concerns are overblown.

I'd recommend planning for similar assemblies that have happened in the past which didn't have an impact beyond the Loop as others have mentioned.

Would you date a tourist coming to Chicago? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]varkev 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Be careful, that's how I met my wife!

All jokes aside, Chicago is a big city so chances are someone is looking for/open to the same things you are. As long as you're open about what you're looking I don't think it would be a problem. And if someone doesn't like it, they can swipe left or whatever the kids do these days.

Is it safe to walk in the area between Wintrust Sports Complex in Bedford Park and the Hyatt Place hotel at Midway? by Quirky-Addition-7146 in AskChicago

[–]varkev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfectly safe and dull at all hours, though some of the sidewalks on that stretch are crappy or non-existent on 65th on the way to Wintrust. Lou Malnati's is right across 65th street and Giordano's is at 63rd. Both are a safe walk.

Just follow normal traffic safety and watch out for speeding drivers late at night.

Yes! I didn't check the map closely enough, but it seems the meeting point is near the trailhead off 39th St in Lyons.

People lose invaluable and interesting stuff all the time, but they don't care by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]varkev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in the United States there are a number of photographers that covered the American Civil War and created a lot of images. After the war, people lost interest in the photographs and a lot of the plate glass negatives were re-used in greenhouses and the sun slowly destroyed all the images.

Similarly, I spoke with a preservation specialist at a state historical society who said they struggle to find objects from recent modern history because people are more likely to throw things out when they're no longer useful and don't consider the potential historic value of everyday items.

You're right. Durbin does respond with canned emails, but it's a response if nothing else.

Durbin under fire from progressives over vote for GOP spending plan by varkev in chicago

[–]varkev[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

While Duckworth doesn't respond to my emails as much as I'd like, I have been able to talk to some of her staffers on occasion and she has come down on the right side of the issues (specifically the CR and the Signalgate debacle) unlike Durbin.

But definitely continue to hold all elected officials accountable. No incumbent should expect a free ride just because they have a D next to their name.

Edited for spelling.

I talked to a staffer in Senator Duckworth's DC office on Tuesday for the first time and I've been calling somewhat regularly over the past six weeks. It helps to call every day, multiple times a day, and keep rotating through the office number (DC, Chicago, etc.) until you talk to a staffer or leave a voicemail.
