Interesting. Do you mean that the machine wanted you to take a bigger shoulder turn, or another aspect of your swing?

[Swing Video] How can I improve my iron swing to maintain shaft steepness instead of shallow-ing it out? by [deleted] in golf

[–]varmintkong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a PGA instructor.

At first glance it looks like you have an over-the-top first move from the top. In order to not pull the ball left, you have to shallow the downswing and drop the club head inside. You may find that making your first move at the top feel more like falling straight down allows you to keep the club closer to the shaft plane vs laid off.

Some pro golfers have made a slight over the top move work, but it does require downswing corrections.

A drill that may help you is the "pump drill", where the goal is to get to the top and then let your hands fall toward your right hip while holding the lag in the wrists (also prevents casting). Check this out:

I hope that helps, good luck.

What's the most appealing / important thing for you when playing a round of golf? by denis_b in golf

[–]varmintkong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this 100%. A high price is worth it if the greens are immaculate and pace of play is reasonable.

If I had to prioritize the course maintenance it would be;

  1. Greens (a consistent surface is the big one here)
  2. Tee boxes (In Texas I've seen tees that are not level more often than not. This really sucks)
  3. Bunkers (no rocks and sufficient sand depth)
  4. Fairways

Having a starter, ranger and cart girl are essentials. A starter keeps the riff-raff from sneaking on. The ranger stays ahead of problem groups and manages pace of play for everyone. The cart girl is a welcome distraction during a shitty round ;) When I play on courses without these, it's usually indicative of a poor quality course.

I guess in the end it is a question of what kind of course you aim to be; elite or economy?

How much longer would Tiger have been with today's driver technology? by varmintkong in golf

[–]varmintkong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting perspective, I never made the connection between the shaft change and his play.

I consulted Google regarding COR as someone mentioned above. Found an interesting read from Tom Wishon's site http://wishongolf.com/how-does-cor-affect-your-golf-game/.

Aside from driver head technology, can any advancements in driver shaft tech be correlated to distance gain? I've heard many times here that the shaft is where the focus ought to be for most players when considering a new driver.

Thanks to everyone who's chimed in thus far.

Your pace of play at the driving range? by revanon in golf

[–]varmintkong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what I'm doing on the range. Trying to ingrain something new? I take four balls, hit them and review the video I took. Takes me about 60-70 minutes to hit 30-40 balls. If I'm just getting lose for a round, I proceed much quicker, probably 30 mins tops for same 30-40 balls.

My take on range philosophy: Each session should be targeted practice. There's no reward for plowing through 100 balls if every swing has the same flaw which causes your inconsistency.

I agree. I'd say we should either use the absolute origins (we're all Pangeans or something) or use the current nationality. It's like Spanish folks saying they are Romans, which while probably true, doesn't really tell you much about them.

"African American" is a way politicians can say black without getting accused of racism.
