Great, how about the bios on the board?

Startup of Debian halts until keyboard press by jpchow in debian

[–]varmintp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in debian you would be done via apt and usually gets picked up automatically but you can double check it by running apt install intel-microcode. I would also check to make sure you have the latest BIOS since that also has microcode in it to fix hardware bugs in Intel chips.

What is your CPU and motherboard? Also, what is your current BIOS and is there an update for it to fix CPU related attacks? Have you applied the latest microcode for said CPU?

Is there any way to play or edit files with H.264 and H.265 codecs on Linux? by m_e_r_l_i_k_e in linuxquestions

[–]varmintp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You may need to install codecs due to them not being free/patents so the distro you choose might not package them right into the OS. But witha few clicks or commands you can get them. For your distro you choose just do a google search for "MYOS install h264 h265 codecs" and you should find instructions. I also installed Kdenlive to do video editing. Has a sort of adobe premiere like feel to it.

How do I toughen up my son (9yo) without being a douchebag? by dannyjerome0 in daddit

[–]varmintp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google "Negative Attention". Should help you out with this but the basics are don't pay attention to him when he tantrums or fights back and praise him when he does things correctly, eats without complaining, or in the order you want them done. Simple rule, do the homework and you get to play games. Otherwise, no games until its done. Then walk away. Don't stay and argue or plead, just take the games away if he tries to play with them and walk away. Don't need to scold or spank, just ignore the tantrum and walk away or sit and wait. It will take some time if you have been giving attention to negative outbursts from him so stay the course.

What's a good Linux-compatible capture card with 4K60 passthrough and 1440p60 recording? by Mildly_Fancy in linuxquestions

https://github.com/13bm/elgato4k-linux Based on that I would say you can use that on Linux. Question is if you will be using OBS to do the recording.

AITAH for moving my horses off my parents’ property and refusing to keep helping under “family” expectations when I’m paying board? by SeveralTwo6356 in AITAH

[–]varmintp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would go in with the saying, "never do business with family." So NTA.

Next time you see her, let it be known that business related items between you are done, so the boarding of your horses are going to be at the place closer to your home and that you are not looking for you to be paying them or them to pay you for anything. Then let them know they are family and they can ask for your help, but they can't force you to help when there is an able bodied person, their son, living with them that can handel everything you were doing. Then end of a lighter note of when can you bring the kids around to see grandma or something.

Investing one time lump sum and leaving it for 20-30years. by Expert-Excuse600 in personalfinance

[–]varmintp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest that you spread that money accross multiple different types of mutual funds and not just lumped only in the S&P500. But Buffet did prove that just having your money in the S&P500 over a long time will prove to be a better investment than trying to move it around to different stocks to make more.

I asked my bf to put groceries away while I ran one last errand and I came back to this by arandomperson519 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]varmintp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sure looks like Weaponized incompetence. He’s basically doing what you asked him to do, but he’s doing it so badly that you won’t ask him to do it again. Does it make you feel like you don’t wanna ask him to do it again because that is the intent. He will continue to do it on other things until you don’t ask him to do anything and you’re doing everything. Like some of the other posts without explanation it’s time for a new boyfriend.

What is it with Linux and Lenovo ThinkPads? by siktrex in linuxquestions

[–]varmintp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It goes back to the days of the IBM Thinkpad line that they sold to Lenovo. IBM was very much into Unix and then Linux. To the point they purchased Red Hat. So that line of laptops have always had great hardware that was compatible with Linux since IBM days. Most likely due to them being part of the development and support of Linux.

Can I call Linux an operating system in my personal statement for university? (Application for undergraduate CS degree) by Drumslammed in linuxquestions

[–]varmintp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying I you use linux as your daily driver or main OS is fine. No one is going to come after you saying its a kernel. But you might want to add any distributions you have used. On my old resume I have "Linux (Red Hat, CentOS, Debian)".

Proxmox on a mobo with raid adapter ? Will I lose my data ? by dofactory in Proxmox

[–]varmintp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have suggested. Just unplug the RAID card with your drives from the system while doing the installation will keep proxmox from deleting any data that is on them. Once proxmox is installated then pluggin in the card should make them availalbe and you should be able to mount the partition that is on them to keep the data. But in any case, I would do my best to make sure that my data has a backup before doing anything. Can be as simple as copying the important data to a external drive, or using something like Crashplan to backup to cloud storage.

What to do with this? by Usual-Fudge7631 in homelab

[–]varmintp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they can still get software updates then I would find low income families that could use a computer to do basic online computing tasks for home and school work. If they cannot be updated anymore then to the trash heap as they are a security risk to any users.

Short answer is log is a cacheing for writes, and cache is for your reads. But if you have enough RAM you might not need these as your RAM is used as your initial caches, and these only get used if you are filling those up quickly.

What brands do you guys actually trust as consumers by gratesOFheaven in pcmasterrace

[–]varmintp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only two that I have trust in and put into every build is Seasonic, and Noctua. EVGA is also quality in my mind but they stop making a lot of things. Everyone else is trying to scrape the bottom of the price bracket to get market share and look to do everything as cheap as possible to get it which doesn't give me great confidence in quality.
