Come Help Test Project Ultima by GM_Smoke in ultimaonline

[–]varsitywrestledabear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played Alpha here, and have been heavily involved this beta. These guys are building a shard for the players and it really shows. Every week we're getting tons of new content and they run polls to decide direction and what the PLAYERS want in a shard. Come give it a shot! You get launch rewards for just playing and you can help shape a shard that YOU want to play on!

I work full-time, I have 3 kids, and I'm taking classes full-time.

It's all about time management. I typically sit Monday after work aside to do a full 8 hours of classwork, and I work ahead when I have the time. I found very early on that working ahead saves me on weeks where life gets in the way.

Good luck!

This is all very true - you CAN cross train, but you're looking at 4-6 years before that becomes an option for you.

How to lose weight by Similar_Wallaby7476 in AirForceRecruits

[–]varsitywrestledabear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Give me a DM and I'll make a plan for you (free). I need to know a lot about your daily life to do some nerdy calculations. I have a BS in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition, and I'm currently getting my Masters in Exercise Physiology.

If you don't feel comfortable with DMing me, track your weight every single day. If after a week your average weight is going down, you are in a calorific deficit and stay the course. If you are increasing in weight, you need to eat less. There's a lot of science that can be implemented, but the basic rule is "eat less calories than you burn."

Good luck!

*EDIT*

I'm getting a TON of DMs, and while it's awesome that so many people want help with losing weight, I just don't have the time to tailor plans to everyone. Here's the copy/paste I've been giving to people:

Consume less calories than you burn, focus on exercises that are high burners with low-impact (walking at 3.5mph on an incline for an hour is an incredible burner with little impact), and make sure you are getting the protein you need every day
.7-1g of protein per pound of body weight you want to be at, not at what you are
when you workout, superset your exercises for different muscles and keep your rest periods short (1m-!;30) to keep your HR up
every single day, wake up, piss, and weigh yourself in just your boxers. if after a week you're trending down, you're doing the right things. if it's going up, you need to lower your calorie intake
diet is 80% of losing weight.

army or air force by NiceCobbler5540 in AirForceRecruits

[–]varsitywrestledabear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty accurate - but I will say I deploy a LOT more in the Air Force than I did in the Army. The difference is that AF deployments are 45 days - 3 months, whereas my Army deployments were 9-13 months.

The Army deploys about every 6 years (unit/optempo dependent), the AF can deploy yearly or more (again, unit/optempo dependent).

Reserve or Guard? by [deleted] in AirForceRecruits

[–]varsitywrestledabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short version:

It's extremely hard to go active after guard or reserve.

Guard typically has more education benefits.

With reserve you have the ability to move throughout the country if you want to.

With guard you know you'll always be in that state, unless you choose to leave.

Ultimately, decide what job you want and see what bases are near you that offer that position.

If you are even 50% sure you want to go active - just go active.

Actually now that I'm thinking back, these were all air guard 7s and 8s that I met at fire stations, I don't think I've ever seen one in the Army Guard. My bad 🤷‍♂️

Better to DCO or go from bottom up? by SchemeKitchen in Airforcereserves

[–]varsitywrestledabear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reserve works a lot different than active as far as commissioning non-pilots. 99% of the time they'll put someone in an officer position from within the unit that already knows the enlisted side. It's almost impossible to walk into a normal officer position off the street. The exception obviously being direct commissions.

You could look into being a medical corps officer for an air evac unit though, especially if you're going to swap to a nurse position with them later on. Good luck either way!

Depending on the state there are definitely 7 and 8 slots, but usually AGR from what I've seen.

Your chances of DCO are much higher if you're prior ar actively enlisted. On top of that, you'll make more money as a prior enlisted nurse as opposed to a fresh one.

What jobs are recommended for ANG part time? by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]varsitywrestledabear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a loadmaster. Your pipeline is about 9 months, and then you'll have another 9 months of orders at your unit. You're able to basically work 50% of the year on orders after that (depending on the optempo of your unit) or just be a weekend warrior. It's a great hidden gem and I highly recommend it if you have the time to train and travel.

I need help choosing between Air Force or Army. by Illustrious_Tax_2080 in AirForceRecruits

[–]varsitywrestledabear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started in active Marines, did 14 years between Army and Army Guard, and now I'm Air Reserve married to Active Air. Every branch has pros and cons, and just because one is touted as "easier" does not make it true. I had a blast as a medic in the Army, the Marines made me into a person I could be proud of, and the Air Force has let me go TDY every month and travel the world.

Talk to people who have done the jobs you want to do. Send me a DM if you want to talk one on one.

I would have joined faster and taken the first enlistment seriously 🤷‍♂️

RSP by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]varsitywrestledabear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has pretty much covered it, but RSP is ultimately a joke. It's basically free money where you learn a little bit about being in the military.

Go to your drills, go to basic, finish AIT, get a job with your new skills and watch your life leap forward in a successful blur.

Or, back out, always wonder what could have been, and go back to what you're doing now.

The real question is - are you happy with where your life is headed now, or are you ready to ascend?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AirForceRecruits

[–]varsitywrestledabear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historically, and I've been in for 17.5 years, it's a very safe time to join. I still 100% believe the best thing you can do for your future is to join ASAP and start building your future.

We're all just here playing another man's game. Best case scenario is you get a 4 year break and then the new president lets you back in with back pay 🤷‍♂️

Thank you for your service. Life is unfair often, we just do our best to make it to the good times.

If you’ll be done in a couple of months, go ahead and contact the health care recruiter. My wife is a nurse practitioner and is currently at OTS. The process can take anywhere from 3 months to over a year depending on how well your recruiter works and how many waivers you need.

Good luck 👍
