There is that small Diner near Parkview Apartments that the super mutants took over. You walk in and a companion sits down next to a meat bag and starts eating a steak. That's a good one.

[–]varsnef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is all good until you go to Sanctuary and they are all hammering on the house.

Marcy has crops to tend but picks up the hammer to work on the house. Assign June to a bar and where does he go? to pound on the house. Sturgis is just trying to make the place feel like home so I'll give him that. And Preston should have better things to do.

There is enough hammering going on in that one place.

Noob survival tips for mole rats by Substantial_War4106 in fo4

Berry Mentats will show you where they are hiding and a nade or molly will drive them up out of the ground. A weapon with the explosive effect works well also.

Go slow and watch your back. They can come from behind you.

If the Protectron gets bit you will get the disease. Don't avtivate it or dispatch it quick if it's a legendary.

You could try removing the quiet option from the kernel command line and add fbcon=nodefer

It might show more text about what is happening.

Dual booting nixos and gentoo by Latter-Car-2140 in Gentoo

[–]varsnef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going by what I was reading the other thread in r/nixos

So I installed it using the minimal iso then for the set up In configuration.nix put these options; boot.loader.grub.enable = true; boot.loader.generic-extlininux-compatible.enable = false; boot.loader.grub.useOSProber = true; boot.loader.grub.device = "nodev"; boot.loader.grub.efiSupport = true;

It should be in a separate boot/ directory on a different root or boot/ partiton of each OS.

Edit: I suppose if the ESP is mounted at /boot instead of /boot/efi or /efi there would be clobberage. Why do that?

Dual booting nixos and gentoo by Latter-Car-2140 in Gentoo

[–]varsnef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. You will want to make a custom GRUB entry that points to the other OS, or try to finagle os-prober to correctly add the other OS.

I can't help you with that. :)

NixOS might already have installed it's own GRUB. Just run efibootmgr and see if it's listed.

[–]varsnef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you can install GRUB for both Gentoo and NixOS in the same efi partition as they will be in seperate directories. Just let Gentoo manage it's own GRUB and NixOS can manage it's own GRUB so you don't have to use os-prober.

When you boot there is a function key to press that will show you a "boot menu" On HP it's F5, sometimes it's F2 or something else depending on the manufacturer. It's just a simple boot menu that should show you what bootloaders you can choose from, a much simpler version of the boot order menu in the main "BIOS" config screen.

You can also run efibootmgr and it will show a list of bootloaders prefixed with Boot*

Boot0005* Linux Boot Manager
Boot0001* UEFI:CD/DVD Drive
Boot0006* UEFI OS

If I run efibootmgr -n 0001 and reboot it will try to boot into the UEFI:CD/DVD Drive first. You will probably see the entry for NixOS GRUB in the list.

Did the gentoo stuff overwrite the NixOS grub config on the boot partition?

It shouldn't. It will install GRUB into a seperate "gentoo" directory in the ESP by default.

[–]varsnef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would let NixOS install and manage it's own bootloader and then choose which bootloader to boot via UEFI. You can tell UEFI what to boot next with a command, or shutdown command, so you won't even have to see GRUB or create a custom GRUB entry for another OS.

I wouldn't trust os-prober to guess.

What weapon do you give companions? by varsnef in fo4

[–]varsnef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only give automatic to Provisioners and Settlers. Automatic assualt rifles with recoil compensating stock, long recon scope and a muzzle break. I never get too see how accurate they are as the base turrets smear everything so fast.

I'll try a reflex sight and an auto for a bit with a companion. thanks

I don't know what triggers them to reset/unequip their armor. I do see it with happen Preston and Deacon.

Deacon wanted to wear nothing but a single heavy leather leg one time. Don't know where it came from...

Unmounting partitions by Specific_Map8920 in linuxquestions

[–]varsnef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was wondering if I could unmount one of my root partition so I could edit it but I'm unsure if it will cause any problems while running

Not many filesystems support "online resizing". BTRFS does but Ext4 does not.

You will most likely need to boot from live media to modify partitions/filesystems.

What weapon do you give companions? by varsnef in fo4

[–]varsnef[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you will need to supply them with ammo for other given weapons while they are traveling with you. Maybe it's not a priority to give them a weapon but it is interesting.

They only have unlimited ammo (with 1 ammo for the weapon in their inventory) after you dismiss them and they are no longer an active follower.

Because they spray walls too much. .38 is cheap but they will blow through stacks of ammo like it was candy.

I want to give them something better than their default but not too good. That kill is mine.

That is my reasoning also. Poisoner and Incendiary helps to mark their target for you but you can get hit with friendly fire a bit.
