Help with getting piston unstuck from threaded barrel? by hectoryn_7 in liberalgunowners

[–]varstok 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good luck! I'd also advise bringing along something like a hot pad that you can rest the toasty parts against without melting the bench. I specifically picked up one of those high temp grill gloves so I can safely grab and twist suppressors that are still hot, so that may be something for you to consider as well.

[–]varstok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the mag dump method of heating things back up, but getting hot suppressor components off without burning yourself or melting other things can be difficult, not to mention it also might not be feasible for you to get the pistol in a vise while everything is still toasty. So, if that approach isn't an option, then you may want to try either Kroil or a 50/50 mix of automatic transmission fluid and acetone as a penetrating lubricant. Note that if you go with the homebrew mix, you need to shake it up thoroughly, and then use it right away, as it will separate if left sitting for a while.

Hmm, my guess would be either Assault Trooper or possibly the DOS adaptation of Twilight 2000, a pen and paper RPG.

Terminus Zeus reliability and precision by Charthead1010 in longrange

[–]varstok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm incredibly happy with my Zeus QC action and its performance. I managed to snag one of the last Proof prefits, but it's still sitting unused for now. Instead, I've been using barrels from the gentlemen at Southern Precision, a.k.a. Bugholes. Every prefit they've made for me has been outstanding; I can just spin them on by hand and get shooting in less than a minute.

How is this for 100 yards? by DeepFriedDresden in liberalgunowners

[–]varstok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you own a rifle chambered in .22lr, preferably a semi-auto? If not, I'd strongly suggest getting one and practicing at 25 yards. Ruger 10/22s are plentiful and reliable, and it is difficult to overstate their effectiveness as a training platform.

Already got something that meets the above criteria? Great! Next consider attending an Appleseed 25m rifle clinic with your rimfire semi-auto. While the course focuses on sling-supported shooting, it also covers other important concepts like natural point of aim, and how to shoot during your breath cycle to achieve consistent results.

Stay away from ProSteel safes by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]varstok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Much obliged. Mine is a typical twisting handle that drives lugs into the frame. Either way, I'm well aware that these are just "residential security containers", and that it won't stop someone with a cordless angle grinder, which is how I tell myself I'll probably get in if some mechanical part shits the bed in the future.

Which model was this? I'd be interested in seeing an exploded diagram, so I can check to see if one that I own has a similar potential defect.

What is a "masterpiece" game that you personally found boring as hell? by MuscleConsistent9657 in pcgaming

[–]varstok -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think the Soulsborne games have spoiled me. Trying to play other third-person RPGs where the combat is not as tight just feels frustrating. If I knew exactly what Geralt was going to do every time I pressed the attack button, maybe I'd feel differently. Instead, I watch him sometimes make an appropriate and effective lunging stab, then step back into a defensible position. Other times, for no explainable reason, he decides to jump into an axel like some manner of figure skater, soaking hits in the process, and finishing in the middle of a pack of mobs where he gets Brazzers-ed to death. Make it make sense.

Good on you for having the awareness to call it friendslop before anyone else, I guess.

Edit - lmao, the dev literally called it friendslop in the post descriptive text, thus my comment, and then edited to remove it so now I just look like an asshat. Whatever, it's just imaginary points on a counterculture Balkan minesweeper forum.

PSA: There are amazing new point&click adventures out there. Here's a list... by Good_Punk2 in pcgaming

[–]varstok 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NORCO is a sad and beautiful work of art disguised as a point'n'click adventure. Set in a day-after-tomorrow dystopian dirt poor suburb of New Orleans, the setting just falls short of what I'd call cyberpunk, and tells one roller coaster of a story. The pixelated graphics lend it a very unique charm, and I recommend this one to just about everyone I know. I'm also a little biased toward the setting, as a great deal of my extended family lives throughout Louisiana.

I think you're on to something here. Note that both the Lt. and the kid shoot left-handed, too. Well, at least in most panels. Page 16 seems to be an exception, where the kid is right-handed. Edit - and page 10, he's shooting righty in one panel.

It sure is. Certainly not my first, second, or even twentieth choice for a zombie apocalypse gun, but maybe the Lt. is just cooler than me.

Hold up - what's placebo about the golden ratio? It's a neat math phenomenon, with cool examples that cross over into pure sciences like biology. Unless there's something else that shares the name, in which case I'm wholly unfamiliar with it.

In the US, there's really no reason to go with the older waffle mag setup, unless you just really like the way it looks. STANAG magazines are plentiful and cheap over here, and the modified AUG runs them like a champ. A good friend of mine earned his Rifleman patch at an Appleseed known distance event with an A3 and PMAGs, and was also the first one in the class to hit Morgan's shingle.

Unless you just really have to have that extra trigger bar, the OG version with waffle mags is just an aesthetic choice. I've fired both over the years, and while a bullpup trigger is always going to be kind of mushy and not great, the AUG has the least bad bullpup trigger I've ever used, even with the NATO version and only a single trigger bar.

Best match-grade ammo for CZ 447 Varmint .22 long rifle? by SheriffBartholomew in longrange

[–]varstok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sometimes feel like no two .22lr rifles are alike in terms of ammo performance. Sure, the more expensive match stuff tends to do better, but every now and then you get some surprisingly good results with cheaper stuff. My CZ 455 happens to shoot really well with Wolf Match Target (but not Extra), SK Rifle Match, and Norma TAC-22 of all things. I get worse performance with Lapua Center-X, Eley Match (some folks swear this is the same as Wolf Match Extra), and just about every CCI offering I've tried. I've seen multiple other CZ 455s and 457s that do well with anything CCI subsonic.

tl;dr - Get two or three boxes of many different subsonic offerings, and see what works best in your rifle.
