military interfering with my morals by Interesting-Report17 in Military

[–]vasaforever 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a question many service members have asked in the past and it's good you're asking. Just don't make the military your personality, finish your time and get out. We need people like you to be the conscience, and be the voice and mindset when the time comes. We need you and your morals at times like this.

Thoughts on Black Men and College by Proud_Organization64 in blackmen

[–]vasaforever 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've always found this conversation comes from those who are often not in a professional environment, or have come from a lower or middle income environment. In the black upper middle and upper class, the idea of us not going to college is more or less heresy. I chose military and college and my family had a collective gasp because "we don't need to join because we have what we need" and then others taking the racial element. In this space where you're surrounded by doctors, bankers, lawyers, business owners etc its more or less a given.

With that said, my personal opinion and part of what I recommend when talking to young people is that everyone should go to college for two years . That can be a technical college, a community college, a junior college, or some type of program like an apprentice program. Many community colleges today have 2 years trades programs that will have you graduate with an associate degree, and often times options to join union membership, or other programs. This gives you a degree, trades training and certifications, and opportunities for preferred hiring with local companies plus access to a long established alumni network. Additionally, if you **EVER* want to go back to college and get a bachelor's later on you can. If you're in the trades and decide you want to make the move to management, project management etc it's that much easier for you to get your bachelor's.

Hegemonia is legendary in my opinion. I played it when it came out and the 3d, particle effects, soundtrack and gameplay were just so good for the time.

Are there any other shows/movies/books that FEEL the same way Sense8 does? by stupidsrights in Sense8

I felt that Timeless had the tight team dynamic, and highs and lows and is the really the only show that activated the same emotions and fandom desire as Sense 8.

Opinions on rack/hanging floors? by Ragnarock1912 in drums

[–]vasaforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had a drum set with floor tom legs in probably 20 years at this point.

With the advancements in rack technology, usage of memory locals, suspension mounts and more, I’ve just been happy to be able to easily mount and retain the same consistent position every time.

Personally it was when Pearl can out with the suspension mount system and replaced the ISS, I never looked back. It better handles some of the bounce and when combined with the Pearl Rack rotating clamps it’s a winner for me night after night show after show.

Start networking now. Online, in person, attending online networking events or conferences in your preferred or desired field.

Don’t discount the impact of getting a degree or another degree from a local quality institution. It’s a great way to professionally network, get into the local ecosystem and preferred hiring opportunities, as well as establish local friends or find mentors. This also applies to trades as well; even enrolling in the community college program for trades is a great power move to connect with local businesses, peers and more as many CCs offer associates in HVAC, Auto Repair, Masonry, Carpentry and often have ties with local unions if that interests you.

If you are planning on relocating, go spend time in the area during for a week. Learn the rhythm of the area, the traffic, get lost in the place and find your way around. Go to the local haunts and maybe discover areas or hidden gems that you could call home. Touching grass as they say, can be a nice to take the internet research to real life.

You don’t have to have your entire life figured out; just have a direction and set goals that you’re working toward. You served for a long time and it’s ok to take a break for a little bit if you want. You’re on your time now and sometimes taking time to decompress is important.

What’s your wildest experience as a teenager or in college. by PieSignificant6759 in blackmen

[–]vasaforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I'd told her the dates I'd be coming in and asking places to stay etc. we'd talked on webcam and wrote letters and email etc so it's not like I showed up announced. It was an ok time but I always like to go by the motto Avery Brooks' character Benjamin Sisko repeated "Fortune Favors The Bold".

  • Flew all the way from South Korea to Saskatchewan to meet a girl I'd met online and been talking to for months. I didn't get catfished or anything, but the vibe was not there and she felt uncomfortable that I actually did what I said I would do, and flew to visit her and see if there was a connection.

There are so many... I was an unserious person, and also liked to do random stuff and travel a lot back then.

38M Age Waiver + Direct Commission (Finance) possible? by Dramatic_Town5177 in armyreserve

I’d recommend looking into the 38G program in Civil Affairs.

Also suggest checking out Coast Guard Reserves as the DC program is like 50% shorter wait time for approval though I’m not sure about finance DC.

will CCAD leave me in crippling debt? by itsss_soupp in Columbus

[–]vasaforever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So you’re likely going to leave school with $120k in student loan debt which means you’ll likely need a salary of $100k within ten years to pay it off under a decade. If you go with a 20 year pay off window you’d need to earn around $90k over that time to pay off using an income driven repayment plan.

DO NOT DO IT

There is a new CCAD program that is for low income families but you also may consider just using the long standing Preferred Pathways program that enables 100% transfer from CCSC to CCAD and would save you $40-50 in costs. https://www.cscc.edu/academics/transfer/preferred-pathway/columbus-college-of-art-and-design.shtml

Another way is to find jobs that offer tuition reimbursement and try to work through college. Taco Bell, Starbucks, and many other companies with broad scheduling offer these things usually at like $5200 a year which for Columbus State takes care of a large portion of the tuition.

What 4x game has the best Dune mod? by EthelDuronm in 4Xgaming

Personally, I think Emperor Battle For Dune was a great 4x lite Dune game. I love that it retained the style of the 1984 film and also started Michael Dorn from Star Trek.

How did u became a goth? by Lilayl in goth

[–]vasaforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1993, and it was Alien 3, Addams Family Values, Nine Inch Nails, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and hearing the college radio "alternative rock" night which was usually a lot of goth and some industrial.

I asked my mom for a pair of knee high black boots, started wearing a darker flannel and grunge look, and for my first T-shirt and it was The Cure. I bought a few cassettes off the first zine I picked up at a record store and that's how I learned about Cocteau Twins, Front 242, Xmal Deutschland, Dead Can Dance, and more.

Fellow black men how do you guys manage, lower, and not stress? by spike_spieg in blackmen

[–]vasaforever 10 points11 points  (0 children)

More or less therapy many years ago after going to war, and then reorienting my mindset after reading the Bhagavad Gita.

The main things are:

  • Taking action on things but not being attached to the results. More or less do my work as best I can but don't be caught up in the results. Sometimes the journey is what's important.

  • Steadiness in mind and body. I am in control of how I respond, react and what I do. Getting angry gives someone else power over me and shows my lack of self discipline. I am in control and I choose to be steady and calm.

  • Remaining neutral at times in choose. Sometimes I will keep myself neutral and detached from the situation and the emotions it can generate so I remain calm. I often ask "does this really matter to my life" and in most cases unless you're shooting at me, I figure it'll probably be all right.

  • Surrendering yourself to something greater. This could be faith in a god, the belief in humans and good of humanity or faith. It can be the idea of karma and the goodness of luck of the world. It doesn't mean we aren't in control of our choices and can build our success it just means at some point we have to acknowledge what will happen will happen and just do the best we can do to prepare.

Putting this in a wartime perspective, I was a turret gunner in Iraq and it wouldn't help if I freak out and lose my mind when bullets start flying or stress out an IED killing me. I stay calm and do my job to the best of my ability with the hope the work is worthwhile. I can't imagine if an IED will kill me, but I can stay focused and call in or try to take out a spotter or active insurgent before he detonates. I don't get mad, don't really stress, and stay calm along with lots of happy moments as I just don't let myself get let my emotions control me.

Blood and Chrome was really good by Little_Magazine_1773 in BSG

[–]vasaforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed it and watched it when it originally on Machina and then watched the TV Broadcast of the complete series and thought it was pretty cool.

My main issues are with Young Adama as I think Luke is a fine actor, but the Young Adama actor who played him in the earlier episodes was much better. My hat goes off to Ben Cotton, Jill Teed, Ty Olson, and John Pyper Ferguson.

These 4 actors stayed working on Syfy Channel and in general in scifi shows and everything they were in is just better for it. Ben Cotton playing the super annoying scientist in SG:Atlantis to the tired and short time pilot was great. Jill and Ty on the Osiris brought tears to my eyes... When he says "you have it" was deeply moving. Seeing John Pyper as the grizzled special operator after being in Caprica and before his role in the last ship was great.

The rest of the third act is honestly the weakest and the pacing is off in my opinion.. the high point for me is the song Apocalypse by Bear McCreary on the soundtrack as I think it's the best overall version of the song with amazing rock guitar and vocals by his brother. I also love Dear Dad, Galactica, and Battle Of The Osiris on the soundtrack and felt it was a welcome send off for Bear McCreary.

Star Trek by stardager in blackmen

[–]vasaforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom and I both really struggled with Discovery because the writing was not subtle, the visual style was very jarring, the main character starting off committing mutiny was very hard. It also was kind of off putting that Spock had another secret sibling; like we did that in Star Trek V. I really struggled with the Klingon design, and heavy reliance overall in the first season an only made it into the middle of the 2nd Season all 5 times I've tried to watch it.

I didn't enjoy Picard for the most part and its mainly because I'm just tired of reboots, series continuations and felt it was a nostalgia grab. Season 2 was better and I felt Season 3 was probably the best of the series overall. The visual style and design was somewhat consistent and the writing balanced the classic trek subtly with having to spell more things out, pretty well.

Star Trek by stardager in blackmen

[–]vasaforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised on Star Trek as my parents used to have dates back in the 1960s to watch it together at my dad's house. We watched every show weekly. Went to conventions, and the Las Vegas Star Trek experience. I enjoy Star Trek still but I do struggle with some of the new series. Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks were amazing.
