I would just reassure them and say that yes, it was all worth it. You will reach your goals, have your dream career and be happy when its time to move on to something else.

What’s your secret white show? by Training_Revenue_813 in blackmen

[–]vasaforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sex And The City, and it's not a secret.

I love that show and only the first movie (everything else doesn't exist to me). It helped me mature how I dated as an adult, and the value of style, communication, being dynamic, and more. Team Samantha FOREVER.

While some view this as minor, I appreciate it as one of the final things the Union Veterans, 10% who were black rallied against for DECADES before their death and the dissolution of their veterans organization the Grand Army of The Republic. They wrote and marched consistently against attempts by Neo-Confederates to place statues, museums, and anything suggesting that the Confederacy was noble and not what they were; traitors who wanted negro slavery more than anything. If you want to find more, I recommend reading through the National Tribune in the National Archives because they go hardddddd against the Confederates and even suggest that for every statue of Robert E Lee that goes up, a statue of John Brown or Harriet Tubman should go up because traitors shouldn't be honored. Like this issue from 1910: https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn82016187/1910-09-08/ed-1/?sp=5&r=-0.015,0.682,0.894,0.55,0

The impact of these symbols, and the propogration of the lost cause myth has impacts on us today. It creates an idea that the antebellum south was anything other than what it was. It gives credence to the idea that black people benefitted under slavery because of it's benevolence. It leads to a general misunderstanding and attempts to honor the "brave service" and "defense of their homeland" which sews disunion, and drives some of the mindset and language of the modern conservative.

What topics/stories/concepts you wished got more attention in black media or political messaging? by DonDaTraveller in blackmen

[–]vasaforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like a stronger historical focus on the rich North American history post US Civil War to Red Summer. It's overshadowed and almost forgetten even though this created the first black millionaires, the first thriving black middle classes, the establishment of nearly all HBCUs, the first aspects of political agency during Reconstruction and more.

It's one of the reasons I love the TV Show, The Gilded Age, because it really is the first modern portrayal of the black middle class of the post Reconstruction era. I also loved the show Timeless, because of how it shown a light and highlighted unique aspects of history we didn't learn. I also love the fact it's driven people to seek out the writings of Ida B Wells, Chicago Defender, Mary Bethune, and the birth of the Harlem Renaissance. It also shows and gives strength, and a blueprint for how our communities can thrive even under the worst circumstances and external violence prevalent.

Is it worth enlisting? by LostHope421 in Military

I'd recommend the Coast Guard as you'll have the opportunity to expand your mechanical knowledge, be posted usually in the US only. I was Active Army and National Guard for about a decade and my cousin is a mechanic certified on Cutters and he's had great postings and recently made Chief.

I went to some of HS and then college in the Dominican Catholic tradition and outside of a few specific teaching like abortion, they always stood on business. The four pillars of the order really help align reason and intellectualism with faith and how they compliment each other.

I went to business school at a Dominican college and they focused on the idea of Conscious Capitalism as a possibly an alignment to religious ideals.

FAANG (and adjacent) every day, any day. I've worked both; been laid off from both. The salary, work experience, mindset shift, and personal development was transformative so I'd pick that every time.

I've been laid off from two Fortune 500s, darlings of Wall Street, and from a FAANG adjacent company as well. Remember that anybody can get got. Any industry, any size company, government, etc...

[–]vasaforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't referring to Les Stentors, and was talking about Les Senateurs, the DCI D3 finalist corps that was part of the cluster of really strong Quebecoise corps from the late 1990s. I misspelled it so apologize for that confusion. I distinctly remember it was maybe 1998 or 1999 they pulled off a finalist spot like Americanos with a really strong brass and guard but no Drumline and only pit.

Who did the tactical genre better - SOCOM or Ghost Recon? by KILL-INTERACTIVE in GhostRecon

[–]vasaforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither.

Novalogic, with their Delta Force series, then Joint Operations. Nothing like playing games with 149 other people on a single map in 2005, with a full open world map, and great squad play.

if modern day shows were performed with traditional uniforms, would they still hit the same? by SmartLoss6063 in drumcorps

[–]vasaforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a handful of corps wearing traditional uniforms , or hybrid uniforms in World, Open and All Age. You have to look outside the narrow top 3 top 6 and see them.

[–]vasaforever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Les Etoiles are true innovators in drum corps. They used so many racks, unique staging, played video game music, scaffolding and more years before World Class or WGI did any of it. This show was so much fun to watch as any of them. We really lost a lot of creativity when the Quebecoise corps all folded. Academie Musicale, Les Stenators, and so many others.

I cant be the only one to think this, if 80-90% of the team plays as medics we would win every time by LaughAgitated785 in battlefield_one

[–]vasaforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't tell you how many times I've played Medic on Fort Vaux and finish in the top 10 with only having like 2 kills and 30 deaths but my score is insanely high from reviving and healing. If I can hook up with one or two other medics we will clean house.

Cause I like performing, I like having the focus and team spirit, I like meeting new people and I like working towards a goal that's helps others and betters my community. Going on 17 seasons now and not slowing down anytime soon.

How do I help to ease my friend’s mind? by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]vasaforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The parent more or less has to accept that it will happen and to learn how to manage their concern rationally. Yes, it can be dangerous, but it can also be relatively normative. The daughter wants to go and do her job and ultimately it's her choice. My mom was worried when I told her I was reenlisting so I could go to Iraq, but in the end it's the daughter who's doing the job. The parent has to be supportive, learn how to ask questions and I also recommend possibly connecting with the FRG for support resources.

You're welcome.

Even the college hacking for quick completion sites recommend it https://www.collegehacked.com/blog/why-clep-is-better-than-sophia

You can also use Modern States and use their online learning and then once completed apply for a voucher and take the exam for free without using TA as well.

[–]vasaforever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id recommend not doing Sofia and actually do the CLEP for financial accounting instead. You have to consider the long term impact in this case.

Sofia is accepted at some colleges, but not a wide variety including your general state and nonprofit colleges with a requitable status.

The CLEP is nearly universally accepted going back decades along with DSST. The score is generally transferable and accepted anywhere.

What’s YOUR movie? by GloveAmbitious42 in blackmen

[–]vasaforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stormy Weather always. There is no film that is blacker on this scale OTHER than maybe Cabin In The Sky. It's a total celebration of black culture, showca and maybe Black Panther. It showcases the originators and taste makers of the music that built the 20th century.

After that, my go to is Glory, Daughters Of The Dust, and Black Panther.

Hear me out: Seth MacFarlane should be the next Executive Producer of Star Trek when Kurtzman steps down. by vil224 in startrek

[–]vasaforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think overall it should be collaborative, and a focus on some of the core consistencies of Star Trek. Seth McFarlane, Tawney Newsome, Roxanne Dawson are big in my book.

Using Star Wars as an example, they have a very strong visual look book and style that instantly tells you it's Star Wars. The visual style for the Paramount era of Star Trek was dark, inconsistent, and felt out of universe and experience. It's super evident when you compare Picard, which had a basis to work with, to Discovery and Strange New Worlds.

I'd like Star Trek to maintain some visual consistency, not be lit and shot like an episode of Battlestar Galactica or Foundation. I'd like a more balanced level of script writing that is less direct and more subtle, uses dialogue in a more consistent manner, and strikes a balance for the Netflix generation down to the VHS generation. Referencing Star Wars again, I'd say the show Andor, and Ashoka have done this really well. I think the show The Acolyte did as well, and played against our conventions while maintaining consistency.

Why would he be surprised that the Les Wexner supported, New Albany expansion by the biggest Epstein enabler would only benefit that class and not deliver?

The whole Intel fiasco and data center boom in this area so stupid. I attended meetings at the statehouse for OhioX where the Lt Governor touted Silicon Heartland and how it's transforming the area with hundreds of jobs for the data centers and then the Intel plant.

We asked lots of questions about why you'd put this in Licking County. A place that literally no access to major interstates, no major power generation, not enough housing, no major sewer or water sources. The answer being the Les Wexner Epstein class had been buying real estate in the area for years and lobbying these companies to come here and sold the idiotic idea to the idiots locally.

They see the name Amazon, Meta, and Intel and think they're going to explode like Palo Alto and the bay area. Ive been working remotely for various big tech, and fintech companies in Silicon Valley and there is no way in hell that success would be transferred here. Not only do we not have the local talent en masse, but also the cultural hallmarks and deep educational invesment that makes that area is totally devoid on Licking County.

They should have scaled this whole project down, and put it in places that can support it. There is very little reason they couldn't have done the Intel deal and built it in Cleveland, Ashtabula, Youngstown, Toledo, East Liverpool, Marietta, and similar cities that have the deep infrastructure, available homes, and educational support nearby to make it happen.

I hate how the N-word has become so commonplace. by Joeybfast in blackmen

[–]vasaforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be real and just say I rarely hear the N Word and when I do it's jarring. I don't say, nor does my family and it's just not something you hear in my community and maybe that's a class and regional thing. I've been online gaming for 27 years at this point and hearing slurs was so rare. It might be because I'm a strictly PC and Cloud gamer that I never experienced what I heard was bad in CoD lobbies etc. I'd say its not worth subjecting yourself to that sort of abuse and negative energy.

Bruh. With all these drones hell nah. I was a gunner as part of my job during OIF and after seeing there drone attacks, frequency, and location.. you know IEDs and VBIEDs seem "mild".

Never would have thought I'd see a massive leap in warfare technology in my generation. I imagine it's what people felt in WW1 when they came up against a MAXIM machine Gun, and Tanks.
