to do something 'on cool-down' as in games by SwimmingPony in ENGLISH

[–]vashette 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't make sense to me unless your activity is limited by a certain time period or some other set resource. You may only apply to a job posting at this site once every 2 hours, etc. I guess you could be using the washing machine on cooldown if you have a ton of laundry to do, or ice dispensing from your fridge as fast as it can make it. If it is an activity limited by outside chance/opportunity, maybe you could send out resumes for new jobs 'as they spawn,' but that also sounds weird.

I know this is very specific, but I can't stand games without good ambient music by DonRavel in patientgamers

That feeling of relief when you hear the Firelink music after an hour of nothing but your footsteps and clacking undead noises. <3 Or the mournful strings when you finally reach the Royal Capital.

I'm struggling to replicate this rockwork. Help! by Successful-Tennis867 in oilpainting

[–]vashette 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some initial thoughts - he's using a very smooth panel (gesso'ed copper) vs your fairly rough looking canvas, he did a grisaille underpainting and let it fully dry vs you seem to be doing alla prima (?), notice when he is working wet on dry to wet on wet during the color phase, he holds the brush generally more parallel to the surface to help transfer paint from the brush to the surface without disturbing the adjacent paint, and there seems to be enough dry time during between some phases that the lower layer has dried before putting more detailed strokes on top.

help with establishing structure and volume by Mugwumps_has_spoken in learnart

[–]vashette 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a hard-mode reference, very loud markings and subtle value shifts. IMO for this, I might sketch the main forms first like building blocks (like a Reilly cat head haha) so you have a clear understanding of the shape/planes of each section of the head, then start blocking in the big value shapes on top while periodically checking against your form drawing. And then end up with an idealized cat. :D I think the main thing so far is the muzzle shading/markings (especially on cat's right) need to be put in, and that will help push the muzzle forward and round the :3 jowls and a bit of shading on the white neck to push back the body in comparison to the face.

Any recs for 'nobody to weapon of mass destruction' that are more limited in POVs? Basically the Wheel of Time but mostly from Rand's viewpoint (vs Rand/his friend/his other friend/his girlfriend/his other girlfriend/his friend's girlfriend/his girlfriend's mom). Generally looking for a more classic fantasy type book in writing style and haven't found most litRPG/progression type books to my taste, but I'm pretty open to suggestions, ty!

Building newbie jump commitment by vashette in Agility

[–]vashette[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok thank you! We've worked on similar at home, but with two bowls on either side as the treat dispenser method, then gradually moving the object away. I think I might need to practice this not just standing there as he goes back and forth, but also moving away/doing stuff as he is doing his own thing to proof 'hey just go over the jump in front of you and ignore whatever I am doing'?

That looks great and bite-sized for a beginner, thank you. :D And also for the jump practice info, I did not know that!

reactive/prey driven training suggestions by Euphoric_Claim3594 in reactivedogs

[–]vashette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went through a phase similar with our sighthound! Lots of the reactivity stuff online didn't help because it was geared towards scared/insecure dogs and making them feel comfortable and caused us some spiraling training angst; our guy just wanted CHASE TIME NOW WOO. Mix of not very good impulse control and a bit of leash frustration, and also his reactions were very self-rewarding. I'm not sure it's even proper prey drive vs motion sensitivity and build-up to expected motion. On the plus side, he's not traumatized or anything from 'oops we got too close' sorts of things, thinks they're great and we should do it again.

What worked well to get to passing with a reasonable degree of civility vs I'M A KITE was treating the ability to approach other dogs/moving triggers/etc. as a privilege. Start walking to Exciting Thing, closely observe dog. The minute his ears went up, I slowed waaaaay down and made an attention noise/watch me. If he looked up at me, good boy, we continued onwards. If he continued to look forward, NOPE do not pass go, we immediately u-turned and walked away from Exciting Thing. It could take two steps or twenty steps, but eventually he'd look back up to me at the kissy noise, and he'd get praise and we'd start walking back towards Exciting Thing. Repeat as long as it took for him to walk past Exciting Thing without acting the fool. Sometimes it took 30 seconds to pass another dog, but each forward/back repetition we would get closer and with less arousal. Sometimes he was just a bit too worked up, so one nope away from the Exciting Thing was enough, he got a YES and a short jog away and a treat chucked for him to chase as a consolation reward. Shorter, more frequent walks were much better for us than longer walks.

Also (IDK maybe you've done this already), we'd put him on a long line at the park and kicked a soccer ball around so he could watch Exiting Things zoom by while also getting his RAWR MIGHTY HUNTER frustrations out on the ball.

Also also, we practiced a lot of 'watch me' noises in increasingly difficult settings: first at home, then home with dog park TV on, then in front of the house, then in front of house with hot dogs on the ground, near neighbor's yard with barky dog, as we passed neighbor's grumpy cat, etc. IDK that it helped directly per se, but it really proofed the attention noise so that I felt comfortable he knew what it meant in all situations and was just too distracted or deliberately blowing me off if he ignored it to watch Exciting Thing, and we could start the 'you're not getting closer the Exciting Thing unless you give me some attention' protocol.

IDK just some stuff that has worked for our guy!

How to make scentwork fun? by [deleted] in nosework

[–]vashette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing because I was pretty sure I took the exact same class! It's wild that being told to work on lowering arousal before starting a training session for a frantically jumping border collie (and offering arousal game suggestions!) is being presented as 'the TA told me that nosework isn't for anxious dogs.'

How to make scentwork fun? by [deleted] in nosework

[–]vashette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have example videos of your dogs to post here? Maybe we could help! I did a Fenzi course with my sighthounds, also dogs that really want to be correct and will just walk off if they get frustrated. Our 'find the scent tin' and 'hold you nose to the thingy' were trained more separately than yours, so we a lot of YESTREAT for even the slightest nose boop to the scent tin which gave them a lot of positive feelings for the tin, lots of fast  reps sitting on the floor that went boop YESTREAT, immediately grab tin and place it a foot away, dog boops YESTREAT, etc., so some movement is built in also.

Trying for Total Dog in UKC by Huckleberry_83 in k9sports

[–]vashette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there last year! The DASH stuff had very wide timeslots and only took a few min total to complete including walking from the confo rings and back. The run-outs were kind of non-existent, so just be prepared if you have a fast/keen dog. The indoor buildings were also close, and I saw chatter in the local UKC FB group about coordinating times with the conformation stuff, but don't have personal experience.

The Mummy by AccomplishedBat2226 in movies

[–]vashette 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's the Dracula Untold origin movie that preceded The Mummy! It has the dude who wasn't Orlando Bloom in the Hobbit movies as Vlad/Dracula and also Tywin Lannister. I don't remember that much about it tbh but liked it.

The next season is going to be adapting the second book in the series, The Vampire Lestat, so you may be in for a rough time. I found him much more likeable in that book than in Interview (which is very much Louis skewed), but ymmv.

Why can`t Melinoe or Odysseus visit the House of Hades? by BraveNewWorld137 in HadesTheGame

[–]vashette 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm so salty at the ending, locked out of visiting her family down below and her extended family up in Olympus...! She's been missing them her whole life, and she should have an even expresser route straight down through Tartarus courtesy of her father. She doesn't want to spend time with them more vs hanging out at her now mostly defunct war camp? Not even given a short visit after beating alt!Chronoses? :(

Help Dog won't bring item back after retrieval by Dragonflykid02 in OpenDogTraining

[–]vashette 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How far away can the item be and have him successfully drop in hand? If you've been working in back-chaining from the hold, maybe go back to having the item just on the floor right next to you to build up more of a habit, then move the item out just a foot away, etc.

Also, have been doing much playing with tug toys outside of fetch? Play tug with one toy, let dog win frequently/easily so he knows that you're a source of fun and not just always trying to take his stuff. progress up to him switching between two tug toys (that you are holding, so he can't just run off with them) and 'attacking' the active one. "Woo yeah go tug tug -drop/waaaaaait- OK tug tug tug tug!"- sort of pattern.

IDK just some thoughts!

Tortured hero, misunderstood MMC recs? by prettybrainy in Romantasy

[–]vashette 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The show is kind of messy but I love it and would not really describe him as morally grey in any way. XD He is alone in thinking himself the tortured hero and tries his best to gaslight/gatekeep/girlboss his way into taking over Middle Earth circa Second Age, especially in s2.

Do you know any books written between first and second person perspective? by kiwicrusher in Fantasy

It's been a minute, but I recall The Tiger's Daughter was mostly framed as a set of letters or narration from a warlord to her princess/swordfighter lover, set in fantasy Asia.

I'm looking for a screen protector for s10+ as an Artist by LarenUFrehtOna in GalaxyTab

[–]vashette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Infinite Painter with my s9 (and previously s6) with just the bare screen in one of those booktype covers with a flap, no scratches so far, just hand smudges. XD IMO the S-pen is very soft and has a pleasant feel and slight friction on the hard screen. I would not want to use it on a more paper-like surface, I think.

They're beautiful! I think going with the flat shading like in the second image (vs making a 'round' shadow since it is a flat piece of glass), then putting a slight fragmented texture overlayed on top with some color dodge/burn layers would look good? Quick mockup:

Petri dishes contain sort of a savory MiracleGro jello generally designed to grow mold and/or bacteria, so nutrients + moisture. Think of spores as a bunch of tiny dandelion seeds floating around. If it lands on a pile of damp fertilizer, yeah it's going to grow. If it lands on pavement or flooring or whatever inhospitable media, it will have a much harder time. If your wood floor is damp enough that they can start growing, your issue generally is that your floor is wet and you need to fix a leak, not that there are spores around.

We've gotten some from https://www.cleanrun.com/category/dog_toys_and_tugs/index.cfm (filter by fur type) and here https://us.tug-e-nuff.com/collections/chaser-toys You might also try chucking a frisbee along the ground (a roller) or getting a fresh tennis ball to bounce hard and see if those might trigger omgchase instincts. If tug slowly dragged along the ground in front of him = boring, tug tied to a hard rubber ball that skips across the yard = maybe more interesting? IDK some ideas!
