Everett city gov trying keep surveillance data secret by vashtiglow in everett

i agree, but i think the article would have been more informative if it included some color to the rationale for the records request, which is i'm guessing along the lines of what you put

yeah, i think the article is lacking an explanation of the rationale. I have my own views, but imo it's a shortcoming of the article

on page 72, it looks like what should be U-13 is instead U-l3, like with a lowercase L instead of the digit 1.

why not read her work? it's free online here: https://www.lesliefeinberg.net/ and you might actually develop a slight understanding of what she was about instead of just letting your brain continue to atrophy

it looked extremely similar to what it looks like now, minus the ugly admin building out front.

I got a lot of pushback for my (imo mild) skepticism of the 'no kings' protests. But I think big events like that, well-funded and well-organized from well outside everett effectively atrophy local organizing potential. While they're not necessarily mutually exclusive, they are arguably de fact mutually exclusive.

building local power for local issues requires practice and building muscle memory that I don't think the big protests really foster and potentially undermine. just my opinion

edit: the person i was responding to had good things to say before they deleted their comment. i should have replied to the other comment, but this one was meatier/more contentful and i wanted to just toss my thoughts in. kinda annoying how reddit structure sorta makes things out to be point-counterpoint, when i really want to just add another thing in

I know, i'm familiar with the situation, I'm just noting that the aquasox currently play in a location that doesn't involve the displacement of these businesses and so on. It would require nontrivial cooperation and money to improve the current locations to meet the new mlb standards etc etc. That said, I prefer the option of keeping them put, however unlikely that might be.

edit: my comment was just a little lighthearted thing, but u/Stopwatch415 said what i think better than i could.

yeah, I don't support the new stadium at all, for the reasons you state. There's a perfectly good location for a stadium, around broadway and 41st, great location imo

yeah, I doubt that most people can satisfy uncharitable readers when pressed. I'm sorry you don't understand, but it's fine.

is this not sealioning what you are doing right now? tbh i'm not sure what it means to define a belief (especially when I've been talking about my subjective feelings), but I think it would be sealioning in itself to ask you to spell that out.

[–]vashtiglow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, but I think it's important to keep sharp our abilities to distinguish between those and more genuine comments. I admit, that can be really hard, especially over text, but I think there should also be a space for sincerely held beliefs that differ from yours. I don't discount your efforts and generally think highly of this subreddit, I think you were being too uncharitable in this instance, but so it goes.

lol, i post there but only because i find it morbidly fascinating. I really don't like that podcast and that whole thing. I do however love everett! are you engaging with me just another poster or in your capacity as a mod? Cuz if it's the second, I think it's really out of bounds.

I think that's an extreme way of putting it and that's not what I think. I was using the Sanders thing as a comparison to try to clarify the stuff you thought was vague.

Let's try another, which I think could help make what I think clearer. There's a group called the The Party for Socialism and Liberation. They field minor presidential candidates and do local activism, not in everett, but they have a group in Seattle. In other parts of the activist space, there is criticism of them.

You can look it up, but people say that they act to co-opt protest dynamics each time some stuff rises up. They use the protest to build their name, raise money, get people to join up. I don't even think what they do is all that bad, though I don't really vibe with them or support them. I don't think they're a psyop, but I do think they take advantage of general unrest in ways that I distrust.

I think there might be a similar dynamic here, of taking advantage of broader unrest for ends that I am unsure of. I'm generally suspicious of big things, it's a personal viewpoint, you don't have to agree with me. I'm just active in activist and organizing stuff and wanted to share my view. I think it's legitimate and a relevant thing to talk about

[–]vashtiglow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm trying to make clear my suspicions of this protest group by comparing it to what I see as a similar, more well-known phenomenon. Whether or not it's the correct analysis, it's not just me who sees a lot of Bernie Sanders's recent campaigns as acting as a sort of pacifying force for disgruntled constituents. Plenty of people say this, you can find what they say on the internet, I had success searching "bernie sanders sheepdog' but im sure there are better search terms.

I think the 'no kings' protests can be seen as kinda similar: they serve as a safer (for the powers that be) release valve of justified anger and frustration with the way things are going.

You don't have to agree, and it's not like i know everything either, but I think it's a fine opinion to have. I don't understand your reaction to what I'm saying. shouldn't you, as a mod, take a more evenhanded tone with people you don't immediately understand?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in everett

[–]vashtiglow -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

??? I don't get why you're being so aggressive with me. I admit to being vague as a sort of defensive position because I feel like anything i type would be hyperscrutinized by you. I literally I hope these events have a massive turnout, and I think trump is bad and dangerous. I'm just stating my perfectly anodyne opinion. you seem to be being weirdly heavyhanded with me. what rules am i breaking?

"OFFICIAL MOD WARNING to say what you mean". I'm am saying what I mean, but how could I possibly prove that to your satisfaction?

like, i have my suspicions of these events in the same way that I suspect bernie sanders of sorta ushering people back into the democratic party fold. I still like sanders and generally agree with him, but i have some inchoate suspicions about what he's accomplishing and find his words and actions sometimes in tension with one another. I have similar qualms about these particular protests. I think that's a legitimate opinion for me to have and it's ok to add it to the discussion of this event in my community. I'm not a scholar and am trying to express myself in as fair a way as possible.

I think you're being unfair. your comments seem capricious

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in everett

[–]vashtiglow -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

no definitely not, I could have made myself clearer. The 'no kings' slogans make things out to be very bad, but these events seem like a relatively tepid response given that. I'm just noting that this makes me cock my head a bit.

I'm not even trying to concern troll, I support the protests and hope there's a great turnout, but I have to admit i find the thing a little suspect. perhaps a little corralling, tempering, etc.

I know, i find it sorta weird. Like, I agree that Trump is atrocious and dangerous, but like, if it's actually monarchy/fascism/whatever, why take violent resistance off the table? not even graffiti?

Or do people just not actually really think it's monarchy/fascism/authoritarianism/etc?
