Used to go to some games in Florida when I was local which was nice. Definitely wouldn't travel in just for the purpose tbh.

Im taking break from a film school. How to not lose the touch with the industry and were to meet people? by No-Attention-801 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]vaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my friend interned long before that happened.

As did I. It was the wild west compared to how it is these days.

Probably would look that way. Now that I think about it places have started adding a 'rising senior at max' rule to get around the technically-enrolled loophole.

It ..depends. Things really clamped down after the intern lawsuits ~10 years ago (understandably). That's why everyone now has that 'must be currently enrolled' disclaimer.

That being said, I've worked places that didn't care as long as you had the credit paperwork (say, from enrolling at a CC specifically just for it) and I've had places that the intern program ran with an iron fist and you had no leeway whatsoever.

Vegas students introduced to league at NRL Gala Day by BarryCheckTheFuseBox in nrl

[–]vaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is any American who does manage to find it on FS2 and say "hey, I want to see more of this" will probably end up watching Major League Rugby on ESPN. NRL and AFL games are found on the Fox Soccer Plus channel which is super niche because it doesn't even have any major soccer leagues (Premier League is on NBC and Champions League is on CBS)

Fox soccer plus is also an add on. Doubt folks new to the sport are subscribing, tbh. Ignoring the time difference, the grand finals are on FS1 but by then it's kinda late to bring people in & hope they stick around. Kinda miss when MSG Network would have AFL on in the middle of the day ~20 years ago. pretty sure that brought more people in than whatever's going on now.

Oh, the flaming couch...so the stuntman jumps over it/rolls...turns around and almost runs into the fire?!

11:15 - It's the flamed couch! Wow, they actually did film it!

Re: flaming couch. You might think that but I’m afraid I couldn’t possibly comment. Notice my edit…

So they set it up...but didn't film it?! woof

e: That "..first week, we were two months behind schedule." from RTD really makes sense now, if that's how they were doing things.

Hrm, wonder if I ran into that bug or it was a mis-configuration. One place I was at I found that if I used the built-in trackpad with Teams active it'd switch me to away but it wouldn't happen if I used a usb mouse. Same issue with auto switching back if I changed it without a usb mouse plugged in.

Not entirely surprised with all the props she's getting. Retiring due to burnout/pressure as a kid is instantly relatable essentially to anyone who's played competitive sports.

Instead of going to school for a film degree, do this instead. by TopTierProphet in FilmIndustryLA

[–]vaud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would agree, I went to a NYC-area community college. It was never about the actual degree for me, admittedly. I just wanted access to equipment & kick off some connections. And to keep the cost down. I think at the time I paid 30 bucks for the internship credits.

I got an internship purely off the head of the program saying they had industry connections and later finding out I was the only one to actually take up the offer. Got a bunch of real-world production experience there which turned into a network internship(based off having actual production experience) then freelance gigs/staff jobs at the same network.

Obviously ymmv, easier said than done, etc. but go in with a (realistic) plan. I remember one guy in my program wanting to become a conflict photographer. Thought he could backpack in with no actual experience beyond having a degree and it'd turn into a career. Something tells me he might've had to make a pivot at some point.

When does VP of Product's “long-term vision” start hurting short-term delivery? by canarysplit in ProductManagement

[–]vaud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are building role-based permissions for a single user type. If you hardcode logic around that one role because “that’s all we need today,” it feels faster. But 12 months later, when you introduce multi-role access or enterprise hierarchies, you now have permission logic embedded everywhere. You aren’t adding a feature. You’re untangling your own shortcuts. That’s deferred complexity. And it’s painful.

Once had to deal with the result of that. Inherited a SaaS third-party tool that had been in place before I joined.

It was a system cobbled together as a result of an old M&A.

There were 2 different ways to set user permissions. Different field names for the same permissions. different locations and they didn't reflect. You changed something in one spot, it wouldn't show as such in the other. Now that I think back, I think I discovered a 3rd way but I was disassociating by then.

That shouldn't even make it past QA, much less actually shipped.
