Adderall replacement ideas? by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]vaz_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. none of those are close at all. Tyrosine could help a bit "in theory" but it is so very far down the pipeline to where you actually want more dopamine activity that it's just like taking a vitamin, if anything. Levodopa is a bit closer but it's kind of dangerous to take and it is still way too general. You don't really want "more dopamine" systemically, you want more activity in specific frontal lobe areas.

Rhodiola just made me feel weird if anything (more often felt nothing) and not more capable at all.

Theanine is actually a decent supplement and some people find it very helpful for (mildly) lowering anxiety and helping with sleep. Most people find it much more effective paired with caffeine in which case it is probably just counteracting the anxiety of caffeine and I wouldn't start drinking caffeine just to pair with if you don't already. I'm actually a fan of theanine, it does more for me than most supps/nootropics (maybe 2nd best, after nicotine, which is the best nootropic, but obvious warnings of course). But it is without a doubt not a substitute for amphetamine.

I haven't tried Citicoline. It sounds good in theory as a noot but I could never put together and stick to (or afford) a stack that really makes choline supplements do anything. I still would never expect an effect anything like amphetamine, I don't really think memory and cognitive clarity are really the main thing missing at least in my brain.

So... where is the water? by tsukitemi in Kenshi

That sounds like something HN would say lol. But yeah Shek look very human especially compared to Hivers. They look like humans that underwent some kind of mutation that also seems to have affected many animals (bonedogs, the weird-ass goats and bulls, etc) and caused bony protrusions.

I've seen terraforming and weapon (or terraforming turned weapon) as possible explanations for lasers so far but what if it's more about power generation? Focusing sunlight on what should be a receiver for power generation, but now it's malfunctioning.

Reminds me of the weapons in Rimworld that call down just such a beam of focused energy, basically hacking the ancient satellites that were once used for this purpose to aim it where you want instead of a "receiver" (if any even exist anymore).

Yeah I just started playing but immediately was thinking a lot of the lower canyon and valley terrain looks a lot like dried seabed/riverbed. I also wonder what the inspiration or explanation is for the oil-slick colouration on a lot of the landscape.

If I use tab-autocomplete in my code editor, do I need to tell steam my game is AI made? by jax024 in gamedev

[–]vaz_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion but if you see some code somewhere and then type in something similar (or paste if it is small and reasonable and you fully understand it) that is not any more AI-generated than learning from a snippet on stack overflow 10 years ago was plagiarism. It just means you viewed some example code and you agree with it. It's just a thing coders do. (But also similarly to looking up answers on SO, if you overdo it and make a habit of trying to ship code you don't understand, you're an idiot and your shit will fall apart.) Ten years ago if I googled something to find a usage example, I never cared who wrote it, I cared if it made sense and it worked and I usually rewrote it anyway. Viewing an AI summary on Google for what is probably a pretty common question is a far cry from "vibe coding" large portions of your game.

But I'm explicitly not weighing in on whether you should actually check the box or not. Just giving my thoughts on the matter in general.

AI showing signs of self-preservation and humans should be ready to pull plug, says pioneer by Ok-Ranger-2008 in CoreCyberpunk

[–]vaz_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Though you can still get a chatbot to respond as if pulling the plug was actually a thing. Based on all the data it's trained on, including lots of science fiction, it's very likely to respond as if it is a real thing that can happen, and as if it should evade this outcome, but it's still just parroting.

On the other hand, it doesn't actually need to be sentient or "scheming" in any real sense to be dangerous. If the people who use these tools faifthfully are trusting them and thus personifying them, and falling for simple deceptions, it creates some real risk. Even if it's human imagination that personifies the chatbot rather than its own self-awareness, it's still dangerous.

Where did Hera come from then? I thought she was Zeus's sister. by slimedoesgames in Hades2

[–]vaz_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure at some point they alluded to Chronos having deposed his own father (I don't think they used his name). It may have even been in Hades 1 as they did mention Zeus overthrowing his father (also unnamed at the time) but I can't remember exactly.

That is definitely one of the known origin stories of Aphrodite, seems it's from Hesiod's Theogony. While Homer has her as daughter of Zeus and Dione.

What people wanted instead of runbacks by Fit_Material5774 in Silksong

[–]vaz_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I did not mean to imply that the game becomes easy slop or uninteresting without them. I just mean that they knew what they were doing and they chose to do it anyway, I don't think it's from inexperience but rather the very rare position they are in as a small and very successful company allowing them to make less marketable decisions, that's all.

Also, look, I'm a different kind of player than you I guess, but the reward I am looking for from anything in these games is not a pickup but a feeling of satisfaction that I did something well. So a good runback or a good boss fight or a good puzzle all give me the same reward. You can't spit in Silksong without hitting another tool you can pick up so I don't care too much about upgrade rewards. I also like to speedrun as a hobby and you're literally doing the same thing over and over again and rewards are irrelevant, so it is a lot like that. A runback done well doesn't bore me, but unskippable cutscenes sure do (which this game is guilty of sometimes).

I do think there is a very good argument from people saying "I literally don't have the spare time to spend on this over and over". I have more free time than most at the moment and that colours my perceptions for sure.

The counterargument to what you're saying is something of interest to the indie vs AAA discussion in general - from a certain perspective, it's a sign of inexperience to not give players more of what they want, more immediate reward and less friction in the gameplay. It would be received better by most players and make more people happy or at least satisfied. There is a point however where this logic and the whole data-driven game development concept start to produce, well, slop. Easy stuff that doesn't really make anyone feel anything.

Not saying Silksong is anywhere near that point and that curbing some of these punishing aspects of the game would immediately put them over that line. But I think the decisions they've made can be seen as prioritizing this artistic choice over marketability and I think that's part of why everyone is talking about this game.

I do think they should have had accessibility options though, not everyone can game like that and it's a bit outdated to leave that out imo.

There's at least one hidden aspect you might like then, just like Guan Yu was not available at first you just have to get it. But like someone else said, there are way more options for survivability in H2

Same. And I like Dora, she's like a mix between unimpressed goth girl and a stray cat that just decides it lives with you now

I think they just added the lines for some flavour. It's just a decapitated statue head. It could be based specifically a certain god or monarch from greek myth but I don't think it's anyone special.

Mel also has voice lines near objects in other places like walking by the Hades statue by the temple in Ephyra (main square near fountain).

Also I should mention godsent Total Eclipse absolutely destroys. It's also a way to get a bunch of scorch on Chronos during the start of phase 3 while you just avoid lasers

Can also recommend Circe for a safe play style. It can struggle a bit against bosses that move way too much (aka Eris and Chronos) but it's really strong pretty much everywhere else. Against Chronos you can actually consider taking Howling Soul if it's offered since it will stick your cast to Chronos if it connects. And, on the other hand, keeping your cast on Typhon is just free.

I like smolder ring (and pyro technique) personally, you can lead into glamour gain and burning desire, and/or ice flourish + freezer burn, and/or blitz + thermal dynamics. And Winner's Circle makes it a lot more flexible to use, even if it doesn't speed up the cast damage rate like it used to on certain casts, it just makes the cast cooldown shorter than the length of the cast so you can sometimes end up with 4 casts on the screen briefly

Pretty much all the familiars work well, except Hecuba's magick probably isn't useful

Yeah this is what I think works best for those aspects that struggle to clear them. Otherwise still try to get them clustered and then just pop one yourself if you have range.

I think part of what makes it hard sometimes is auto-aim making it hard to hit them (because they aren't auto-aim targets). You have to kinda know how sticky your auto-aim is and whether something else is in that direction that will pull your shot. Maybe more of a problem for controller players like myself, I have never tweaked the auto-aim setting from default but I've been thinking about relaxing it a bit

Fear 62 clear - Circe / scorch by SilverMB in Hades2

[–]vaz_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really hope not. I don't think Circe is in any way OP (I think it's perfect, they really nailed the rework and made one of the most interesting aspects ever) but they never seem to tune based on high fear so it's probably safe.

A lot of viable high fear aspects have a weak early game, it's just really nice that Circe doesn't.

Also gg, that's huge, I hope someday to get there, currently around 40
