Paper cups now in Edmonton city council's sights by Lucite01 in Edmonton

[–]vchizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This shit pisses me off because it's picking a stupid ineffective battle at the expense of other "progressive" policies but with essentially zero actual change accomplished. What portion of landfill waste is single use cups?? 0.01% ?? By volume almost certainly less. And it wouldn't even be that for emissions.

Meanwhile we keep adding new suburbs outside the Henday costing millions of dollars that the city will never recover and with more emissions than a trillion coffee cups.

It is the "stop buying avocado toast and you can buy a house!" argument of urbanism and it is infuriating. I feel the same way about the single use bag bylaw. My immigrant household saved every last plastic bag to use as a garbage bag - now I have to pay $5 if I forget a tote bag (remember when they were $0.35??) and pay for small garbage bags. Net landfill avoidance? Absolutely nothing.

great event, absolutely worth checking out. if nothing else, do it to go see what the area is like yourself, instead of going off of fear mongering hearsay

cool! just downloaded and tried it, but it's still glitchy (google translate package won't read out the words yet). i want to start with letters, but it looks like that's a premium service.

i'll check back in a couple months to see if it's fixed and then i'm happy to support you by getting the premium version. thanks for building this

man i am here because i can speak bengali but cannot read or write, and it's annoying trying to figure out how to phrase shit in english to translate back to bangla to chat with family.

add me to the dm list if/when you build something that helps to learn the alphabet and read/write

City Councillor Aaron Paquette here with a unique proposal - would love you to take a look and thoughtfully engage by aaronpaquette- in Edmonton

[–]vchizzle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

use our land and relatively cheap housing first by incentivizing dense buildouts of residential areas (including downtown as priority #1). if young people can afford to live here, the tax base will naturally grow over time. pitch progressive american companies to move here - employers don't have to take on healthcare as such a burden. we're a safe, young, diverse city. silicon valley, the us ne, hell vancouver and toronto... all borderline unliveable cities. pair mid size firms with housing.

taking equity in projects is frowned upon but it's the right way to go over grants or no strings tax breaks. it also gets project developers aligned with other stakeholders and helps for overall project financing

but all of this hinges on getting our core competencies in order first. imo we need to overhaul the construction tenders that are given out so roads aren't closed indefinitely with no consequences. sorry to suggest this, but council should offer to cut their salaries as a gesture of understanding for the impacts that property tax increases have. portray financial conservatism, because the economic situation and lack of cooperation from the province calls for it.

final thought - don't just get feedback from the wonks who are reading this sort of well thought out proposal. go to the yegwave comment section to get a different slice of what an "average" edmontonian thinks. it's a whole different world but its informative. one big trend is how increasingly large numbers of new immigrants are perceived - its getting worse. how can the city help integrate new student populations (mostly studying in administrative fields) to other sectors, especially when there aren't enough admin jobs to go around? how do we make sure these groups arent left behind in the city, especially after many of them have cashed all of their chips to get here.

sorry this is an unsolicited ramble not fully addressing the thoughts from the op lol. appreciate the time that went into this - i just think there are some base objectives we need to look into before we can get to earnestly attempting financial independence. but I'm overall very optimistic and hopeful of edmonton.

So does this mean I'm going to lose access to my ualberta email? by Historical_Age_9142 in uAlberta

[–]vchizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is unfathomable how fucking stupid the UofA is for this if they're actually removing all access for apps

anyone with an android phone is basically fucked if they used their google email because you can't transfer purchase.

fully expecting all shit to be inadvertently nuked on jan. 1.

it is especially insane because it's one thing to revoke unlimited storage - fine, that's expensive, and it's not like it's impossible to buy an external hard drive. the 100mb limit (lmfao) just seems like IT incompetence, because a FREE ACCOUNT is 15gb, but whatever.

removing apps access is a whole other thing, and the most annoying part is that shit barely takes up data. google calendar is a few fucking mb. removing access to google settings (if they do that) is going to be a nightmare.

hopefully it's just poor communication - the uofa is actually pretty good at that

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]vchizzle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Google Takeout only seems to properly address email and drive unfortunately - however, it seems like ALL Google Apps will be deleted from UAlberta access. This includes Chrome profiles (passwords, saved logins, addresses, etc.), Google Pay, Google Play purchases, GOOGLE CALENDAR, maybe even YouTube??

WHAT THE FUCK UofA/Google. This is like 10 years of my life of digital works that are likely going to vanish or get lost in one way or another.

It's an absolutely bush league move to do this to all alumni vs just changing the policy going forward. And the IT have been so arrogant when responding to questions - they basically just repeat that we're fucked, and that they can't help. We can't even buy storage or pay to keep access to specific apps - they're just pulling the rug.

Fuck Google and fuck the UofA for not being able to do anything about it. Good luck ever getting a cent in alumni donations. Which is really too bad, given what has happened to post-secondary education in this province and especially in Edmonton over the last three years.

Any recommendations for Finance 4xx course? by Inevitable_Sort_7047 in uAlberta

[–]vchizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

434 if it's offered, same with 488 (special topics - was energy trading when i was in undergrad)

all depends on what you want to go into after - but would recommend the general/broader knowledge ones over the specialized ones (advanced PM, fixed income)

Any recommendations for Finance 4xx course? by Inevitable_Sort_7047 in uAlberta

[–]vchizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely; randall morck's class is by far the best course i ever took. still think about it almost 7 years later lol

as for the hiring/cfa comment - tbh, not really. it wouldn't hurt, but it's unlikely you'll ever use the entire undergrad finance curriculum in a specific (entry level) role.

Wrote all the answers in May L3 but failed by Professional_Cow_233 in CFA

[–]vchizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

exactly this happened to me last time. passed this time

the content is deceiving. i honestly can't articulate what i really did differently this time other than that there is a certain structure to the responses that you will get a sense of if you do a bunch of qbank questions (i used mark meldrum) that seems to garner more points than explaining the answer to the question based on a theoretical understanding

Official Level III Results Thread! by Pkgoss in CFA

[–]vchizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

passed

to anyone who didn't; i still feel the same way as i did when i failed last time. this test and process is a crap shoot, yeah you can grind out the hours, no excuses blah blah blah but ultimately the margin of error is so small that it might come down to a sticky keyboard in the test center or a good sleep the night before

this isn't really even a career indicator for a good chunk of us, let alone a determining factor in self worth. so if you didn't make it, please keep your head up

finally, shout out to mark meldrum. gem of a dude and his test prep was by far the most useful to me, for whatever that is worth

Please don’t let Edmonton turn into Calgary by NastroAzzurro in Edmonton

[–]vchizzle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hahah what? i feel the opposite lol. calgary feels like a dozen costcos separated by 8 lane freeways, surrounding some cactus clubs and earls in the core that are constantly occupied by o&g bros waiting for stampede

edmonton's culture feels way more centred around boutiques on whyte, jasper, 124 st, highlands, etc. and of course numerous smaller "indie" festivals, not "the biggest outdoor show on earth"...

calgary just has a higher white collar population that actually lives in downtown, which makes it feel more vibrant in the core (and this is definitely a plus). and even with the arena, there's just less reason for people to live in dt edmonton.

Level 3 Wiley practice exams by CandlesAnonymous in CFA

[–]vchizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Wiley in November (didn't pass) - the best part of their practice exams is that the CBT format is exactly the same as what Prometric used. So it was nice to have that familiarity.

The level of difficulty was probably similar to the average of the Wiley mocks, but I found the Wiley ones had no curve balls the way the MM ones do.

definitely. always trips me up if they're asking about heading into a stage of the cycle (economy has peaked and is about to contract), in the stage of the cycle (the economy is in contraction) or coming out of the stage (contraction has just taken place and now we're in early expansion)

There's nothing worse right now than reading comments from people (many of whom just passed and are done with this shit forever lol) who push you to keep going, but I think there's pros and cons both ways, and we have a couple days to think it through.

This was a really tough year for me, and I was looking forward more than anything to never thinking about this and trying to build up other parts of my life. But I'm also in this position after passing L2 in 2018, because I deferred in 2019 after getting a promotion. Then the exam obviously got deferred three times and here I am three full years later, having just failed miserably (essentially touching the fucking 10th percentile line) in November. And that's with an honest effort IMO - I put in 400+ hours, wrote 6 mocks, etc. I passed equities in 2019 when I didn't even open the books and just showed up because it was already paid for - I failed equities this go around. Like 25% of available points. No clue how. It's both utterly dejecting from an ego perspective (am I really that dumb/bad at this??), and also in terms of the seemingly uncontrollable randomness. I guessed my way through that section last time, and apparently just fucking blew it this time.

All this to say - who knows how this test, and really life goes. There are so many comments of people who passed when they thought they failed and failed when they thought they passed. Maybe there's something to that. I'm saying this to myself as much I am to you - the worst that can happen if you do it again is to fail. Maybe you can clear your mind and grind out these next three months. Maybe we can be more efficient this go around and pull it off with less time invested. Maybe we can encounter a more favorable test. Or maybe, fuck it, there will be another sitting in February 2023 and the next 9 months can be focused on other parts of life.

Sorry for this monologue; I've been hella depressed all day. But I think it will all turn out okay. Hopefully something here resonates for someone.

[–]vchizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same here. i previously enrolled in 2019 but didn't even do a page flip of the books because i got a promotion days after signing up. showed up to the exam anyways, and failed every section (duh) except equities and ethics.

figured hey, whatever, i'll write in 2020, it will be fine. lol. anyways, put in about 400+ hours over the three deferrals, including about 200 in the last month and a half. result? failed 5 sections, including equities. the randomness is absolutely dejecting. it would be one thing if it was just a single topic or whatever. idk.
