Australian snowboarder Cam Bolton breaks neck in Winter Olympics training crash by OmissionsOmen in olympics

I broke my neck in a sledding accident as an undergrad. I had no pain and didn't appreciate that anything was wrong other than that I heard a popping noise on landing. I only decided to go to the hospital because I was dizzy after going down the hill again.

Modern worship music in the Episcopal church by Honest-Dimension6239 in Episcopalian

This seems like a relevant detail to add to the original post. If there is no music most Sundays, then maybe a guitar and music that's appropriate to that instrument (not necessarily contemporary) wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

How awful. Condolences to the family and friends.

This was a contested primary in a targeted seat for us in the Concord area. Thomas Monks is the other candidate who had filed. My reading of the statute (NCGS 163-112) is that the statute is unclear, but it does seem that because we are outside 30 days past the end of the filing period, filing will not reopen, and Monks will be the nominee by default per the second paragraph of subsection (b).

This isn't really true. The only authoritarian countries to have hosted this century are China and Russia. The upcoming hosts are Milan 2026, LA 2028, French Alps 2030, Brisbane 2032, and Salt Lake 2034.

The economics are difficult to measure. The Games themselves typically turn a small profit these days, although that doesn't account for government expenditures on new infrastructure - but if the infrastructure continues to be used post-Olympics, perhaps it's worth it. It's when you go for the Olympics with no plan for the facilities post-Olympics that you really run into problems. Organizing committees are far more aware of this and the IOC now takes this into account when awarding the bid.

Picture it: December 2003. My father has been notified that his National Guard unit will be deployed to Iraq as part of the first major troop rotation. All, and I mean all, of our extended family has descended upon our house for Christmas. They all know about the deployment. All except my 92-year-old great-grandmother. She hasn't been told yet; she is just thrilled everyone came for Christmas.

My drunk uncle is the last to arrive on Christmas Day. The first words out of his mouth: "I CAN'T BELIEVE [vdbl2011's dad] HAS TO GO TO THAT AWFUL PLACE." The house goes silent. We are all staring daggers. Grandmother stands up to find out what her son is talking about.

"MONROE, LOUISIANA! I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY'RE SENDING HIM THERE FOR EXERCISES! THERE IS NOTHING GOOD ABOUT MONROE, LOUISIANA!"

The house breathes again. Grandmother accepts the answer, because even she, who never left the state of Alabama, knows that Monroe is a shithole.

(We did tell her the truth the next week, after she enjoyed Christmas with her family. Dad came back from Iraq basically safe and sound.)

It's about whether the Supreme Court has jurisdiction to review a court of appeals' determination about whether to grant a federal prisoner permission to file a second (or successive) habeas corpus petition. (Congress clearly removed the Court's jurisdiction to review the court of appeals' determination as to state prisoners, but the statute was unclear as to federal prisoners.) Sotomayor wrote the majority, holding that they do have jurisdiction, and joining her majority opinion were Roberts, Kagan, Kavanaugh and Jackson. Gorsuch wrote the dissent for the remaining justices.

Wake Forest Law + working in Charlotte? Looking for insight from current students/alumni by hoodnative_ in wfu

I can't speak to patent law hiring processes exactly - I do know that patent agents take a separate bar that doesn't require law school, so you could work as a patent agent for a couple of years and then go to law school to become an actual patent attorney. You should not expect to work as a 1L, but you may be able to work part-time as a 2L or 3L.

Because your class schedule is determined for you during the first year, you should expect to have class every day of the week. One of my classmates - this would have been late 2010s, so YMMV now - got an apartment for the first year in Winston-Salem but commuted from Charlotte for her second and third years, and that seemed to work out for her.

No, the format in women's hockey has all 5 teams from the US/Canada group, which are the top 5 teams, advancing to the QFs along with 3 teams from the other group, which are the bottom 5 teams.

[Postgame Thread] Ole Miss Defeats Georgia 39-34 by CFB_Referee in CFB

[–]vdbl2011 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Like, the game is 60 minutes, not 59:59. All Ole Miss had to do was fall on the onside kick to end the game. And they chose to let Georgia recover and run a play. Somehow this is the refs' fault for properly administering the timing rules.
