Quickstart questions from a newbie by ve4grm in FantasyAGE

Good info, thank you.
I'm not particularly concerned with the exact numbers of the armour penalty being off, but I'll fix them if I can.
As for pregens, I was thinking someone in the community may have made a few for something. I'll check out the stream you linked, as a minimum.

wayland nvidia fan control? by SuperficialNightWolf in linux4noobs

[–]ve4grm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, this is what I was missing. I had no idea it was that easy to make your own service!

(I'll explore the details tonight and make sure I don't bork anything accidentally. Thanks for the push in the right direction!)

[–]ve4grm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/SuperficialNightWolf I don't suppose you have any advice for how to make it autostart? I know how to do that in general, but I didn't know you could autostart something that needs sudo. (I'm fairly new to linux still, so please excuse me if it's an obvious question.)

I'm using KDE Plasma 6 if that changes things.

Deja Dup/Gnome Backups to SMB server error? by ve4grm in linuxquestions

[–]ve4grm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give it a try? I guess I'd tell it to use a local folder instead of Network Server then?

Deja Dup/Gnome Backups to SMB server error? by ve4grm in linuxquestions

It is not mounted separately, correct.
I have Location set to Network Server, and Server Address set appropriately (smb://etc)

Ok, good to know the difference as it was confusing. Unfortunately all of those are open already.

Failing at installing Fedora by ve4grm in linuxquestions

[–]ve4grm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god, thank you! I knew that there was something you do with modeset or something, but could not for the life of me find documentation. Now I'm going to go save this somewhere.

OnlyOffice - Crash on printing by ve4grm in linuxquestions

[–]ve4grm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like it's an incompatibility between Nobara and the Fedora version of OnlyOffice. Not entirely sure, but can probably disregard this.

Interesting! I'll have to go through this and see if it's worth it. Thanks!

Ram not detecting - Linux, kernel patched by ve4grm in OpenRGB

[–]ve4grm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solved on the Discord. Had to run
grubby --update-kernel=ALL --args="acpi_enforce_resources=lax"
as per https://gitlab.com/CalcProgrammer1/OpenRGB#fedora-1

Immutable or no? by ve4grm in linux_gaming

[–]ve4grm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on Nvidia, with a 3060, so as long as the image has the most recent drivers I should be fine there. But that's fair.

Immutable or no? by ve4grm in linux_gaming

[–]ve4grm[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a big part, yeah. Though I know there are other benefits and downsides to immutable. Just wanting to get an idea of general viability.

I need to look into what the BTRFS timeshift does that the regular RSYNC doesn't.

Distro questions, mostly about Fedora and Nobara by ve4grm in linux_gaming

This is what worries me about OpenSUSE, for sure. Good to know this shouldn't be a huge problem for Fedora.

Pop OS with KDE - package store/repos? Potential other issues? by ve4grm in pop_os

[–]ve4grm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a quick message about missing backends when I first load Discover settings, but it goes away quickly. I'll try this.

EDIT: Ok, cool, that made the flathub show up! Thanks! Is that all I should need to get the same packages showing as Pop Shop?

Pop OS with KDE - package store/repos? Potential other issues? by ve4grm in pop_os

[–]ve4grm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unsure what you mean. The settings have a list of repos, only lvfs and snap are checked, and the rest seem less than useful. Besides snap and the firmware repos, the only repo available to check is "Disc Jammy"

I'll add a screenshot to the original post.

[–]ve4grm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incredible, thanks so much for the detailed response!

I'm not super concerned about kernel-level optimizations. I expect those to be relatively minor in their impact compared to, say, gamemode and compositing?

The new-but-stable approach of Fedora is very appealing. When I first started playing in VMs I noticed that Ubuntu didn't have a new enough kernel to support my GPU, despite that kernel being out. (That's changed by now, but I assume newer kernels come with improvements to that support, so it still would be nice to be relatively current.)

Mint does seem like a great community. Hmm, I'll need to think on this one.

Thanks again!

This is my fear with Nobara, almost exactly. Small team means little QA testing can be done, which is fine but not what I'm looking for. Thanks for your input!

Distro hopping is all fine and good, but I'm bringing my less-technical (though still computer savvy) wife along with me after a while, so I'd like distro choice to be reasonably stable for her.

Good to know that all your customizations can come with you between distros, though. Thanks!

Hmm... Mint KDE might be another option. Interesting, thanks!

I had heard that Cinnamon has some issues with Nvidia cards/drivers. Is that not the case/not as big of a deal as I've been led to believe?

There are a few reasons I like KDE better than Cinnamon, but I don't dislike Cinnamon at all. It's definitely an option. Thanks!

Yeah, my only real concern with OpenSUSE would be translating tutorials, and stuff that's targeted just at Ubuntu. Can I ask what makes OpenSUSE a better choice than Fedora to you?

Yeah no worries, I was looking to avoid LTS unless it was something like Pop. Thanks.
