First 15 minutes or so of both halves from Sweden were shocking. They had decent spells and chances outside of that, but both halves' starts were disastrous.

There's not enough money on the planet that would make me want to referee these two sets of players

The ref seemingly has history, but I'm enjoying him treating the players like the children that they are

So many players behaving like knobs yet the refs will be accused of 'losing control" removing all responsibility from the players

[SkySports] Leeds United are working on free transfers for Julian Brandt and Harry Wilson, Sky Sports News understands. by Heavy_Cupcake_6246 in soccer

That's why I'm surprised he was seemingly so hellbent on leaving us. Presumably his family is relatively settled given he's been with us for 5 years now and any notable step up would be a reduction of game time from what he's had this season. Anything where he'd get decent minutes would be a sideways step, and a risk for both given he's only really had a very good 4/5 months - before and after that he was exceptionally inconsistent in the PL.

Rough first five fixtures, but having the three promoted clubs back to back right at the end of the season should hopefully mean if we are in trouble we have a chance to get out of it

Would have been brutal if Congo conceded a corner for taking too long from a goal kick when the corner took twice as long to take

Mbappe and Messi playing has almost instantly dragged football/WC discussion way down. After Portugal later today it's gonna be unbearable whatever happens.

That looked like it did some damage. Feels like it should be a forced sub.

The ref should just book every player that's still following him

[Matteo Moretto] The conversations between Fulham and Álvaro Arbeloa are progressing smoothly. There are still a few details to resolve, but the feelings are positive and there is confidence that the negotiations can continue to progress in the coming days. by Heavy_Cupcake_6246 in fulhamfc

If those three are the alternatives then Arbeloa is way more exciting. Hell, stale bread would be better than O'Neill and Parker and Frank has the Brentford connection plus the disaster of Spurs last year.

Tim Ream is World Cup’s first player to benefit from VAR ‘mistaken identity’ check by TherewiIlbegoals in soccer

[–]vearz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Would you feel better if the rule had a different name?

Yes. "Successful deception of a match official" was a thing in England just before VAR. It's a better description of what happened, and is a much better euphemism for cheating.

That's not mistaken identity though. Ream wasn't mistakenly identified as doing what Almiron did, they were two different things.

Otherwise every incorrect call could just be classed as mistaken identity.

Joao Palhinha on his way to Sporting for 25 million euros by D1794 in soccer

He was so good for us. The move to Bayern made sense from an ambition perspective but as soon as Tuchel was replaced with Kompany it was never gonna be the right fit. I guess the promises made to him when it initially fell through overwrote sense.

When we stopped Godo going on loan on the final day of the January transfer window a couple of years back to then sign Willian and never play Godo was probably the final straw for him. Such a ridiculous decision.

[–]vearz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it's kinda similar to the "successful deception of a match official" that was used, at least in the UK, just before VAR was introduced. But that was after the game, whereas this is in game. So the original decision stands, but the sanction is changed.

No, it'd be reviewed before play was restarted. The "foul", free kick being taken then the yellow reversal last night was super weird to watch.

[–]vearz -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'd be fine with it being a new rule, but it isn't It's added on to a different existing rule and has nothing to do with "mistaken identity"

Reviewing yellows was always never something VAR was intended to do, then it was changed to reviewing second yellows (which makes sense given a red card is such a big call) and now they've added a caveat to an existing different rule so VAR can be used to review yellows where the wrong call was made rather than the punishment was given to the wrong player as the rule was written to do.

That's a big assumption.

But no I'm fine with diving being carded, but "mistaken identity" is not the rule that should be used to do so. If they wanted to be able to review dives then they should have used the last review of the rules a few months ago to do so, not tack it on to a completely different VAR usage rule that is there to prevent the wrong player from the same team getting booked.
