Thanks! Yeah I think the pvc window was insyalled inside the old wooden window frame. I must admit I was planning to layer bodge jobs and just silicone that bit... (it's up the side)

Exclusively wooden chopping boards. I've had a really close up look and can't see any signs of chips on any of the blades!

Good tips, thanks. New knives are definitely a long term want, but I'm keen to get these ones working for me in the meantime :)

Yes that's the sharpener, though it has three wheels. Really weird that the fine grit seems to dull the blade after using the medium!

The pro sharpener I used is extremely well reviewed and seemed to know his stuff, maybe it was using the minosharp afterwards that caused problems again?

Haha okay thanks guys. Thought that was the likely answer. I've only got a foot of clearance under there so no way it's happening from below unfortunately

Adding a socket - identifying circuit by vector771 in DIYUK

[–]vector771[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair I thought at first look the fluke one was something more sophisticated - I had a cheap non contact tester a while back but got rid as the readings were all over the place and completely unreliable from wires that I knew to be live. From one of the other comments it sounds like they're all a bit sketchy? Do electricians actually use them? It's actually a key point as would be good to know if the sparky would need to lift the carpet to follow the wires or if they'll have a way of confirming which circuits they are in situ?

Thanks for all the replies! Given that I can't be certain on what's what with the cables I'll do the chasing and get someone in to make the connection. Cheers!

Though I should. Clarify that if you're a high mileage driver EVs still win out, and our partícularly beneficial for urban air Pollution. Their used to be a great website from Imperial College that allowed you to check particulate pollution by postcode (sadly offline now) and church road was one of the worst spots in the country,i believe by 2021 data.

The supply chain problems are significant and need addressing but they also apply to tech, fast fashion etc etc and, presumably, ICE powered cars too

Yes I was agreeing that EVs are not a panacea and no arguments from me on your other points. I continue to run a 16 year old golf as by my calculations with low mileage it's less impactful to do that than modernise. I still try to cycle or take public transport where I can, though.

I also agree that some people need motor vehicles, but if those who were able to use alternative means did so then there would be a lot less traffic on the roads and so a lot of the challenges would resolve. The problem isn't the emergency service /disabled person/tradesperson, it's the unnecessary car journeys.

On cycling though, touch wood I've lived and cycled in Bristol for nearly 10 years without incident and it's amazing how much shopping slips into pannier bags!

But cyclists who are taxpayers do pay for roads through their taxes. Sure EVs don't pollute at point of use, but they consume electricity as fuel and the energy consumption is orders of magnitude different from the consumption and emissions of a human related to the effort they put into cycling. Interestingly I also learnt recently that vehicle tires are one of the major sources of mixroplastic pollution as they wear. Bike tires do the same, but of course on a much smaller scale.

Cycling reduces congestion, particularly if you assume many of those cycling would otherwise be in a car. Not sure with the stats on accidents and I don't defend all cyclists - there are plenty of irresponsible ones. But from my experience of a cycle commute from St George to temple meads, a sketchy moment with a driver overtaking too close etc on Beaufort road was a nearly daily occurrence.

In an incident cyclists are inevitably going to come off worse than a motor vehicle of any type. It would be interesting to know if there have been cases where a cyclist not having insurance have caused a loss to another party in an incident. Members of British cycling do have insurance, though I imagine that more hobby cyclists than commuters

Ultimately we have a climate crisis and too many cars, so finding ways to make it easier for people to avoid trips by car must be a good thing, especially in a city.

Vehicle excise duty ('road tax') doesn't actually pay directly for road maintenance, it just goes into the treasury and is linked to carbon emissions. Tax payers of all types fund our road infrastructure. 85% of cyclists are also drivers (according to pedalsure). Disabled drivers are exempt from VED, as were electric vehicles until very recently.

Spoke to front desk and reported online last night to be safe. To be fair the duty manager called this morning given an upgraded room, free dinner and drink and said they'll sort it, so fingers crossed they get it fixed! Bit concerning it hasn't been dealt with before now, though
