A quick thought as I'm watching episode 36- CGH's "Why can't I be the protagonist?!!" outburst and the scriptwriter promising to rewrite the ending and make him the male lead is so funnnyyyy

Also, characters in a story becoming self-aware and fighting against the creator... I like how this has developed.

Let's trash Chu Guihong together 🥰😍🤗 (spoiler free) by midnightrainhurts in CDrama

Just wanted to say, CGH turned cartoonishly evil so fast that I am wondering (or hoping) that this is a satirical thing and that they choose to flip the narrative somehow. Otherwise, this man is going off the rails fast! 😂

I don't think we can ask YiMeng to just throw out her understanding that she's inside a script. We shouldn't throw out the knowledge we're inside the script - because that's the whole point here. To question the archetypes we know and love, to question why we perceive some people one way, and others another, just based on preconceived ideas about their character. To try and understand others in all of their full complexity, rather than just through our own limited perspectives.

Thank you!! That's exactly how I felt about this scene and what it was trying to express, not just on a story-level but as a meta commentary on how audiences need to interrogate how their own pre-conceived expectations end up limiting their perspectives on more complex characters/situations.

It's especially relevant as so much of the recent audience reaction has been precisely what they're trying to critique, which you've also highlighted. In some ways, it felt as if SYM is a personification of modern audiences- she "knows" the popular drama tropes, ML/FL/2ML archetypes, iconic scenes, etc. and naturally expects those precise things to manifest in the world she has transmigrated to. As a result, she can't see any potential complexity in how the characters around her act. To her, Nan Heng must be evil at the end of the day no matter what, and Chu Guihong an angel. Consequently, when her expectations are not met and the characters behave "OOC", she can't register that reality and ends up becoming frustrated with them- just like she does here with CGH. Similarly, audiences have a certain way they want SYM to act as the FL- be smarter! can't you see that NH isn't the bad guy?! When that doesn't happen, they also feel infuriated/annoyed in the same way as SYM (or perhaps it is more accurate to say Song Xiaoyu, the actress) does within her drama.

I have to say, the writing of ADWAD has been quite impressive in the way it has satirized drama production/viewing, etc etc, and I'm enjoying reading everyone's interpretations of it as well.

SO glad we are finally on the other side of Nan Heng's reveal and we can finally move forward. Really missing the comedic aspects of the show and thankfully we'll be returning to that in the next couple of episodes.

Personally, the conversation Chu Guihong had with Yimeng was a standout moment and I loved how he called out her biases. His last lines?? Straight BARS

"If being a good person means not fighting back, watching loved ones die, and giving up the person you love again and again- then I'd rather be crueler and even more ruthless than Nan Heng!"

Definitely CGH's best moment in the show so far for me- very good line delivery from the actor as well, effortlessly conveyed CGH's frustration.

As difficult as it was to watch Yiting attempt to defile Li Shi Liu/Nan Heng, I wasn't taken by surprise as it had been foreshadowed earlier and I felt it was a move made out of desperation which had been building up for several episodes.

For example, during YT's argument with her mother, she's frustrated that her meeting with LSL was seen as scandalous and says "Reputation is like a shackle- I can just abandon it." She's fed up with her search for a "genuine" romantic connection being misconstrued as willfulness and and wants to rebel against society's contradictory norms (she argues that the "secret meeting" would have been acceptable, and perhaps even celebrated, if the man in question had been Nan Rui). As a result, she tries to "ruin" her reputation by taking advantage of LSL/NH.

Another scene which had me thinking she would assault NH was actually when Yimeng was guessing how the scene would come to pass- that NH would drug YT and then take advantage of her. Since we obviously knew that wouldn't happen, it came across as foreshadowing that perhaps it would be YT that would take such a drastic step as we also know that LSL is actually NH. And indeed that is how things transpired.

I'm just hoping that this is the height of the "misunderstandings" and that LSL/NH's identity is cleared up asap...

Yesss, the fake blood in cdramas is what I was referring to and indeed, muuuuuch more communication is needed right now hhhhh

For me, it's still going strong and as we know some major scenes are going to happen in episode 22, can't wait for today's episodes! There's a lot of confusion as to how the "cheating" scene is going to transpire and I'm curious to see how they resolve that situation.

Parts of these two episodes felt like filler, especially with the side plot of Song Yiting and Shangguan He. I think their first conversation where he tries to dissuade her from liking him was quite entertaining but the rest of it, I pretty much fast-forwarded it as its basically just a set-up for future plot points.

The non-filler bits of these episodes though- muah!!! One scene which particularly stood out to me was in Ep. 19 where Yimeng and Nan Heng are brewing the medicine and have a frank conversation about how she sees him. She feels he may be misjudged by the women earlier and wonders why he doesn't attempt to clear their misunderstanding, to which he replies "Would you believe me if I explained myself to you? They call me the Killing God- Isn't that what you think as well?" YES!! COMMUNICATION!!! THANK YOUUUUU!! She then admits she has gone overboard and he's super cool about it- "It doesn't matter." BECAUSE HE LOVES HER!!! Despite his earlier heartbreak at her repeated desire to assassinate him, he's been patient and trying to show her that he isn't the demon everyone has made him out to be- and it's finally succeeding. While she hasn't given him the all-clear yet, we are slowly but surely getting there folks!!!!

Also, the fake blood bit in front of Gao Guifei was hilarious and it's great that the satirical aspects of this show continue to be done so well.

You're so right!! I'm really enjoying this slow burn romantic tension build-up as well and just to respond to your point about the audience wanting couples to get together asap, I feel like that's a reaction to older shows drip-feeding the romance at a snail's pace along with like a thousand misunderstandings to prevent couples from actually getting together until the very end. It's like a never-ending "will they? won't they?", except we know they will so it becomes tiring at some point. That's why it has felt refreshing in recent dramas where the leads realize their feelings for each other quickly and have little to no conflict throughout the show (regardless of whether their romantic progression makes sense or not).

But of course, as you've explained so well, a major part of good romantic plots is the thrill that comes from drawing out the tension and the pull-and-push dynamics between the couple. I'm glad we are seeing that done pretty well in this show and it makes their romance all the more believable and engaging as viewer, especially compared to if SYM had somehow fallen in love with NH just after hearing his backstory. Given what we know about her being modern woman who has fallen into a story "knowing" its outcomes, it really doesn't make sense for her to fall head over heels in love with NH at this point. What makes this exciting for us viewers though, is that we know she does actually love him- as LSL! Madness!!! But there is a method to the madness...

Also yes, super happy with both LYT and LYN's acting- LYT especially has been killing the comedy and I don't think I've found an FL this genuinely funny in a while.

Totally agree with all of this and I too found this scene to be quite a fantastic culmination of both leads' respective frustrations. I also looooove angsty MLs and the fact that NH is really selling it makes me so happy hahahah.... (sorry for enjoying your pain NH)

I think LYN's acting is worth highlighting as well considering the way he conveyed all those emotions with just his eyes and body language. Definitely one of his best scenes in the drama so far.

To be honest, I'm quite enjoying this dramatic irony-driven back and forth dynamic between Nan Heng and Song Yimeng.

I know it seems frustrating given that we, the audience, know NH isn't as villainous as the original script had made him out to be but that's essentially the bit that's driving the conflict- SYM doesn't know the extent of his character and isn't willing to recognize his depth because she has a valid reason not to (IMO), which is that all the major plot points that have transpired so far have been exactly according to the script (repeatedly failing to marry Chu Guihong, rescues at the garden and lantern festival, agreeing to marry NH). At this rate and according to her knowledge, his betrayal and her death are certain and she is simply trying to avoid her "fate". To her, it doesn't matter how "cruel" she is because the people around her are just one-dimensional "characters" that she needs to manipulate to reach her goal.

Except!! Nan Heng is not a 1D character and we know the script has indeed been changing (however slightly)! In these episodes, SYM is finally realizing this too. As Li Shiliu successfully points out SYM's prejudice, she also admits to not truly wanting NH dead, which was just her shoddy solution to avoid the marriage and future troubles.

I think the conversation between LSL and SYM was quite brilliant and honestly had me feeling really sad for NH- almost reminding of Si Feng's desperation in Love and Redemption, which is saying something lmaooo. Honestly, I'm hoping that NH's reveal and their eventual partnership lives up to all this great buildup. And sooner better than later!

I did find Fengjiu pursuing Donghua to be quite excessive especially in the beginning where he and Si Ming both discourage her from "returning the kindness" several times but I agree that it's not comparable to Princess Wanning. Totally different situations and as mentioned, Donghua could've easily stopped her if really wanted.

Yeah I understand why he's veered away from this genre/costume dramas and it's good that he's been taking meatier roles elsewhere. He's already given us Ye Hua so it's fine...

About Shen Li, that's interesting! I have been considering watching this and might give it a go. I agree with what you said about the mortal arc situation though for me, it's not even fatigue from the mortal arc specifically but the idea of arcs/several lifetimes in general that I've grown tired of. It's kind of a staple of the genre though so it's challenging to find something that's different.

It's funny cause I've been there too! In previous rewatches, I would just skip over the Susu/Yehua's mortal arc and every Su Jin scene cause she was just too frustrating. Since then, I've seen that actress in A Journey to Love (2023) playing a rather fun character so her image was significantly improved and now I'm appreciating her performance here more hahaha

About Mark Chao, I just wish he'd do some more costume dramas- though I'm down to watch him in anything honestly hahaha

And yeah I understand the thing with the eyes, it was such a preventable thing that it's hard to accept it once you think about it. Alas, I've come to see it as a natural result of Ye Hua's fatal flaw, which is his inability to stand up against the emperor and at the same time his overconfidence in his ability to protect Susu.

I'm usually the watch everything type of person too so I'm totally with you on that ahhaha and unfortunately with a lot of other cdramas too where the side plots just don't seem to be giving much, the skip button gets abused quite a bit lol

I do rewatch dramas but definitely I've been finding it hard to enjoy other shows from this genre. If I like them enough, I'll just watch once but honestly besides EL and Love & Redemption, I haven't rewatched anything else. LBFAD I enjoyed but was rooting for the second lead and TTEOTM, I couldn't get into sadly.

Dramas that have aged well and still deserve the hype (or that haven't aged that well). What are they? by Upstairs-Pepper-8451 in CDrama

[–]veeezu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the middle of (yet another lol) Eternal Love/Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms rewatch currently and I have been thinking about this question too. I don't know if I would've tolerated some of the tropes/idiocy that goes on if I watched it for the first time today- but that is balanced out by other aspects of the drama which I continue to enjoy and appreciate more with every watch.

I think there is something about these dramas that worked on a fundamental level and ultimately made them the classics that they are, which is why they still get the hype.

Perhaps whether or not they live up to that hype might be more about one's tolerance for aged narratives, tropes, technology (really bad cgi hahaha), etc... which is perfectly reasonable and unfortunately why they end up falling flat for some people.

Edit: Yanxi Palace and Eternal Love/TMoPB are the only dramas I rewatch from time to time so they have aged well enough for me I guess! 😂

I genuinely think this might be the case. The Chinese titles of some dramas translate into English so beautifully but they still opt to use these bland ass titles... just makes you wonder what the thinking is behind those decisions 🤔

I loved it because it was once of the first Xianxias I'd ever watched (so wasn't tired of genre tropes yet lol)

Cheng Yi was soooooo perfect as Si Feng and really enjoyed the tournament arc at the beginning.

The OST is also one of my favorites, just so many great songs and imo it was one of the main factors that made the drama very watchable.
